Jam tight and jelly roll

B&B investigate a double homicide - the corpses are of an incredibly obese couple bludgeoned and burned to death on a bed in a vacant house up for sale. Booth's grandpa comes to pay a visit and stay with Booth for a little while. Grandpa is played by Ralph Waite, who played Jethro's dad on NCIS a season or two back. So I guess this makes Booth and Jethro related somehow. Not much else going on here, although Waite gets to dance with two very large women in a nightclub for large women. I would be happy to see Waite turn up again on a future episode. As the man who raised Booth (and his brother), Grandpa quickly sees that B&B are meant for each other and makes no bones about it. Pun intended. As usual, the killer is rather obvious, but that's part of the fun as B&B, and Brennan's lab crew, must figure things out bit by bit.

Booth really is a complete human.

We have been given many views of Booth's human side over the series, but for me this is the one that really shows the whole truth. In this episode his grandfather Hank shows up for the first time and causes a mixture of irritation and joy for Booth. (Who, with an elderly relative, has not experienced the same?) The fleeting instant when Booth is watching Hank enjoying himself dancing with the two women at the club is what shows his soul. His completely unselfish joy in Hank's pleasure is blazoned across his face (kudos to DB! It's only in a fraction of a second.) and we realise that his FBI armour really is just that.

Like Grandpa/Like Son

Ralph Waite plays Boone's grandfather, who has been thrown out of his assisted-living facility and is coming to live with Booth. There are the obvious issues with someone who is having a bit of trouble with dementia and day to day issues. He is also a free spirit, trying to enjoy life. The main plot involves a pair of bodies reduced to ashes on a mattress. It is discovered by a real estate agent. The trick is to figure out how they could burn to a crisp together. One of the fun things, however, is Grandpa's insights into the relationship between Brennan and booth. There is a very touching goodby scene.

My Therapist Says I'm Afraid to Feel

Definitely not here for the case of the week in this episode.

However, the presence of Ms Sarah Gray Rafferty as Katie Selnick the realtor makes it worth watching. From her discovery of the body in the beginning to her frustration with the investigation, every single scene of hers is just great (although maybe I'm just biased as a massive fan of her as Donna Paulsen in Suits).

Another bright spot of this episode is Booth's grandfather who we finally meet after learning about him briefly in season 4. It gives us some more insight into how Booth treats his family as well as his past and childhood after his father abandoned him and his brother. And it definitely doesn't hurt that Pops sows some seeds of romance into Booth and Brennan's brains, continuing to push them together as has been happening more and more this season.

Overall, if it wasn't for the case, the episode would probably have been perfect but I'm still giving it a 10/10 because - Sarah Rafferty.

Side note: I refuse to believe that Angela recognised the 'Price Co Blossom Orange' from the sludge in that petri dish. I don't usually pick up on the magical evidence in the show but this one completely took me out.

Bizarre...

The main story is about a couple that are found in a burning bed. The whole thing is a bit strange.

Booth's grandfather (Daddy Walton) has arrived in town. Booth is happy, but Brennan believes he will have trouble taking care of Pops. She becomes close to him and helps Booth take care of him (the whole thing was very domestic and very sweet). Pops tells Brennan about Booth's past and asks her to hell Booth when the time is right and "to hold him."

In the end, Pops returns to the care facility because he loves Booth. He wants nothing more to see Booth and Brennan together.

I can relate.
