- The Toraji Transport Network train travels through space, and an emergency transmission goes out from it. The Marshal in charge says that they're under attack and have been hijacked. Cybermasters cut through the hull and enters the bridge, killing the passengers and crew. The Marshals gun them down, and the Cybermasters glow with power and regenerate, coming back to life.
The Doctor arrives in the TARDIS, but can't materialize aboard the train because the Cybermen have set up a blocking field. She, Yaz, and Dan put on space suits and board via a high-tech rope ladder from the TARDIS, and the Cybermen detect the TARDIS. They go out on the roof as the Doctor and her companions board the roof. Meanwhile, the Marshals move through the transport, refusing to abandon the cargo that they're protecting even though the passengers are at risk. Cybermasters approach and fire, then captured at least one Marshal and demand the location of the cargo. The Marshal refuses to tell them, and the Cybermaster "deletes" her.
A shot knocks Dan off the train and cracks his helmet, and Yaz grabs him and pulls him back. The Doctor deactivates the transport's electromagnets and everyone on the roof is released. The Doctor holds onto her companions, while the Cybermasters float off into the surrounding space. The trio enter the train, and the Doctor says that Dan has to stop the train, while she and Yaz find out what the Cybermasters are after.
The Cybermasters find the cargo while the Doctor and Yaz find the remaining Marshals. Dan manages to stop the train, while the Doctor goes to deal with Cybermasters. She confronts them in the cargo hold and tells them to get away from the cargo pod, and tells them that reinforcements will be there and they failed. The pod bursts open, revealing a young girl inside. The Doctor tells the girl that she's going to protect her, and the Cybermasters fire at her. She takes the cover, and the Cybermasters tell the girl that the Doctor lies and teleport away with her.

In London, 2022, Ace is taking photos of an empty wall in an art gallery. A curator comes over and says that there was a painting there, and it was taken away for preservation work. When Ace says that it was restored two months ago, the curator says that it required additional work. Ace goes to the café where she's having a video call with Tegan Jovanka. Ace tells Tegan that fifteen of the world's most well-known paintings have been taken down without an explanation. Tegan is in Romania and tells Ace that three seismologists have disappeared while investigating a volcanic chain, as have other seismologists around the world. She also tells Ace that when she arrived there, there was a package waiting for her containing a card from the Doctor as well as a Russian toy box. The doll was of a Cyberman, and Tegan wonders why the Doctor sent it to her, especially since she hasn't heard from the Doctor in over 40 years.
The Doctor returns Dan to Earth for a date, and he tells the Doctor that she doesn't have to come back for him and explains that he looked at death on the train, and he doesn't want to face death again. He says that he has to get back to his life, and he can because he's been with the Doctor. The Doctor says that life and home are important, and they go out to Dan's house. Dan says that he'll see the Doctor again, and she goes back into the TARDIS. Yaz is with Dan, and she says that she's glad he got back.
Inside, a Dalek transmission breaches the firewall and a hologram of a Dalek tells the Doctor that it means her no harm. It says that it has information critical of the future of Daleks and humans, and they must meet in person. When she refuses, it offers her the key to the destruction of the Daleks if she comes. It says that it no longer believes in the Dalek Nation. The Dalek mission has changed to the perpetuation of the Dalek race rather than the Kaleds, and the Daleks have lost the right to survive. It says that a Dalek invasion of Earth is imminent, and it can offer the means to destroy all Daleks. The Dalek says that it must trust her to save the lives of billions of humans, and then it says that it's been detected and ends the transmission.
Yaz comes back in, and the TARDIS alarms go off as it locks onto the child's trail. It shows that she's outside Earth in 1916, and the readout shows one planet too many in the solar system. The extra planet is in the shadow of Earth.
In St. Petersburg, 1916, Rasputin Grigori--the Master--arrives at the Winter Palace and tells the Tsarina that her son's hemophilia has worsened. The Master assures the Tsarina that her son will be much improved in the morning, and he hypnotizes her into believing him. The Tsar asks what the Master's advice would be on ending the ongoing war or send in more troops, and the Master advises the Tsar that he and his family should take some time off and go on holiday. The hypnotized Tsar agrees, and the Master says that he will take care of the Winter Palace, and the Tsar says that he will obey him.
On the new planet, the TARDIS materializes and the Doctor and Yaz emerge. There's organic life there, converted to metal, and the Doctor recognizes it as Cyber technology. Yaz sees another TARDIS and they go to it. The words "ha ha ha" are on the outside sign, and they go inside and hear the Cloister Bell toiling. Yaz asks if it's the Doctor's TARDIS from the future. Its core has been lashed into the planet's core. The screen shows another energy source on the surface, and they go out and find the child tethered to the planet. There's a visual projection field in place, shielding the child, and when the Doctor deactivates it, it shows a Qurunx, one of the great mysteries of the universe and sentient energy, A Cybermaster appears and fires a shot at them, and say the planet is the zenith of Cyber-conversion. It says that the Master awaits her, and summons more Cybermasters. The Doctor and Yaz run into their TARDIS and dematerialize it, and Kate calls and says that UNIT needs the Doctor's help.
At UNIT HQ in London 2022, the Doctor and Yaz meet Kate, and she tells them that fifteen paintings and a dozen seismologists have gone missing in the last two weeks. Kate introduces two of their new freelancers, Ace and Tegan, and Tegan tells Yaz that they used to be companions. After a moment, Kate says that they discovered that the face of Rasputin was inserted into every missing painting. The Doctor recognizes the Master's face, and he broadcasts to the Doctor, saying that his keynote speech is beginning at the International Seismology Hall. She realizes that the Master is behind it all, and Yaz confirms the Seismology Hall is near Mt. Vesuvius, at Naples. The Doctor touches Tegan and then Ace on the shoulders, giving them both an electric shock, and promises that she'll be back. She sonic them and then leaves with Yaz.
The Doctor and Yaz arrive at the hall, where the Master is giving a speech, surrounded by the shrunken corpses of the missing seismologists. He greets the Doctor, and says that he's giving her fair warning to leave Earth or she will not just die, but be erased from existence forever. He knows she won't leave, and Kate's reinforcements arrive and arrest him. She tells Yaz to cover the Master with a gun, and says that they're taking the Master in the TARDIS. In the TARDIS, the Master says that he's ingested the Cyberium and can see all their futures, and warns Yaz that her end will be very painful. An alarm goes off revealing coordinates for the Dalek fleet.
Vinder comes through a wormhole, telling his superiors that the Daleks are coming. He crashes on the Cyber planet and reports that he has found the missing Qurunx, but it's tied to a central control system. Vinder spots the Master's TARDIS.
The Doctor takes the Master to UNIT HQ, and Kate locks him up in the bunker. As he's taken away, he taunts Ace and Tegan. The Doctor and Yaz go, while the soldiers lock the Master up. As the TARDIS departs, Yaz tells the Doctor that she can't keep going with her when the Doctor never explains. The Doctor figures that the Daleks, Cybermen, and Master are all part of some bigger scheme. She touches Yaz on the shoulder and sets off a spark of static electricity, and sonic her. The Doctor figures that she has to take the risk the Dalek is luring her into a trap, to get the information on how to destroy the race.
The TARDIS lands in Bolivia inside a volcano, and the Doctor meets with the Dalek. It says that all information is in its casing, and the Doctor attaches a data transfer device. Meanwhile, Yaz finds the Daleks using a piece of equipment to trigger a seismological device.
As Ace and Tegan set up monitoring on the Master, Tegan notices that the toy Cyberman is standing on the floor. The Master addresses them from the monitor, saying that he sent the toy knowing that she would keep it close to her. He used tissue compression on it, and it reverses size and Cybermen emerge from it, including Ashad. Ace and Tegan grab weapons with gold bullets from hidden caches and open fire, The Cybermen say that they long ago developed defenses against gold and return fire, then advance and the former companions run as UNIT soldiers arrive only to be gunned down. Ashad goes to the bunker and frees the Master who has a teleportation device hidden nearby and uses it to escape.
In the volcano, more Daleks surround the Doctor and the traitor, and the Doctor figures it's the Traitor's plan. The Daleks explain that the Traitor didn't betray the Doctor, then blast open its casing and destroy the mutant inside. They then force the Doctor into the casing, which traps her and it teleports away with her as Yaz looks on. Yaz goes into the TARDIS and dematerializes it, using a book and the post-its that the Doctor put up. The Cloister Bell rings, and Yaz tells the TARDIs to follow the Dalek trace and the Doctor.
The Doctor is teleported to St. Petersburg 1916, and the Master as Rasputin greets her. The Cybermen and the Daleks are waiting with him, and he notes that they hate the Doctor more than they hate each other. The Master says he has a 3-phase plan, that Earth will soon fall without the Doctor to defend it. He plans to invoke forced regeneration on her and he'll use the converted planet to provide the power. He turns on disco lights and dances.
Vinder takes out the device the Doctor gave him, as the planet activates. Meanwhile the Master prepares to remove the Doctor from the casing.
Vinder contacts the TARDIS. The Master sends his own signal to tell the TARDIS goodbye, and Yaz has the TARDIS lock onto his signal. Meanwhile, he puts the Doctor in a glass cell and prepares to regenerate her into him. He draws the energy from the planet to feed the regeneration, and the two Time Lords regenerate into each other. The Master in the Doctor's form staggers out, and the TARDIS materializes and Yaz emerges. He greets her and says the Doctor is forever gone, and he still need a companion.
Tegan and Ace reach Kate, who is locking down the building to keep the Cybermen from leaving. Ace opens a cache with automated landing parachutes, and pulls out her old jacket and bag, and tells Tegan to come with her.
In the TARDIS, the Master tells the TARDIS to obey him. He glows with regeneration energy, and tells Yaz that Earth will become a factory for the Cybermen and Daleks, while he tarnishes the Doctor's name across the universe. He goes to find clothing other than the Doctor's. As he leaves, he tells Yaz if she tries to escape or touches anything, he'll kill her.
Ace and Tegan go the rooftop, and Tegan tells Ace to find the Doctor while she helps Kate and makes up for her mistake of bringing the Cybermen there.
The Master emerges from the TARDIS, wearing the clothes of previous Doctors, and sees the Daleks and Cybermen attacking each other. A news drone appears and the Master tells it that he's the Doctor and he caused all of this. Yaz shoves him down and leaves into the TARDIS. The Master is content to wait until she comes back.
The Doctor finds herself in a wasteland. The First Doctor is there, and says that she refuses to pass through so she must be strong of character. Other Doctors are there, and tell her that she has to hand it over to the next Doctor. They explain that they are the Guardians of the Edge, and manifestations of her consciousness, and they are on the edge of existence. The Doctors say that they can't let the Master hijack their existence, and they figure he'll be vulnerable until his regeneration settles, then disappear.
The Doctor's hologram appears to Yaz in the TARDIS, and explains that it's an interactive AI designed to appear if something catastrophic happens like the Doctor dies. It explains that she placed a sonically triggered nano implant under the skin of Yaz, Tegan, and Ace by touching them. Yaz says that she has a plan and materializes the TARDIS on the planet next to Vinder. He goes onboard and Yaz explains that the Doctor is gone. Yaz wonders how they can reverse a forced regeneration, and the Hologram warns that it's dangerous. Yaz tells the Hologram what happened, and it says that there's one dangerous possibility.
In Unit HQ, Ashad and the Cybermen convert the dead UNIT soldiers. Meanwhile, Tegan returns to Kate and asks what the plan is, and Kate says that it's containment termination and structural termination. There's a building termination device in the basement, Kate says that she'll distract the Cybermen while Tegan gets down to the basement. Soon, Kate tells the Cybermen over the intercom that she'll surrender to them if they can find her. They go to search for her.
Ace leaps off the rooftop and activates the parachute. The Cybermen fire at her through the windows, and Yaz rescues her in the TARDIS. Yaz drops off Ace at the volcano to stop the Daleks, and then goes back to the Master. He enters the TARDIS and she apologizes to him, and he says that they could have fun travelling. Vinder is hiding in the shadows.
The Hologram appears to Tegan, and it changes into the different Doctors until it becomes Five, reacting to her emotional memory. He says that he remembers all of them, and Tegan tells him that she missed him. The Hologram tells her to go, says "brave heart", and she goes to the elevator shaft leading down to the basement.
In the volcano, Ace sneaks up on the Daleks and the Hologram appears to her and then becomes Seven. He says that he was trying to teach Ace good habits but failed, and she tells him that he made her the person she is. She apologizes for judging and then leaving him, and he assures her they're ace. Ace then approaches the Daleks and runs into Graham, posing as a volcano inspector. He explains the Dalek's plan, and Ace says that she'll show him how to deal with them.
Ashad and his Cybermen break into Kate's command center, and she says that a laser shield is separating them and reinforcements are on their way. Kate steps out and says that if Ashad releases the UNIT soldiers they're converting, they can have her and she's of greater strategic value. Ashad figures she's stalling for time and tells her the Doctor isn't coming. He accepts her surrender, and Kate lowers the laser shield. The Cybermen take her away to be converted.
Tegan climbs down the shaft to the basement, and Ashad hears her as she almost slips. He tells the other Cybermen that there's a renegade human in the shaft, and they blast through the walls. Tegan has no chance but to let herself fall.
The Master returns the TARDIS to St. Petersburg, where the Daleks and Cybermen are waiting. He tells them to unleash the volcanos. At Bolivia, the Daleks activate their device and set off volcanos across the globe. Yaz tells the Master that he'll never be the Doctor, and he agrees and says it's time for her execution. The future Doctor walks in and when the Daleks and Cybermen open fire on her, they discover that she's the Hologram, and they shoot each other. Vinder emerges from the TARDIS and tells the Master to get into the forced regeneration machine. He shoots the Master and Yaz tells the Master that the Doctor is loved and has gathered friends.
The Cybermasters start regenerating, and the Hologram has Yaz direct their regenerative energy into the machine. The Doctor is pulled back from the border and she regains her body, while the Master is erased from existence. The Hologram departs and the Doctor goes into the TARDIS.
Ashad and his men take Kate to the basement, and put her in a conversion pod. Meanwhile, Tegan reaches the basement and the Hologram directs her to reverse the conversion power. A Cyberman breaks through the wall and grabs Tegan by the throat, but she manages to pull the cord and short out the Cyberman.
In the TARDIS, the doctor tries to piece it all together and then says that they're going to need help.
Ace hits a guard Dalek with her bat, knocking it out, and then she and Graham place Nitro-999 on the device. They run into the TARDIS after it materializes, and the device blows up and takes the volcano with it.
Tegan and Kate run out of the UNIT building as it self-destructs. and find the TARDIS waiting for them. Tegan gets into the TARDIS and the Doctor invites Kate in.
The Master staggers out of the bodies of the dead Cybermen and Daleks, in his Grigori body.
The Doctor positions the five of her companions around the TARDIS console, and then goes to Vinder's crashed ship and fixes the crash damage. Once she's done, he tells Vinder to get off the planet while the wormhole is still open, and goes to the Master's TARDIS. He links the two TARDISes so hers can jump-start the Master's. Her companions activate her TARDIS on her signal, and Vinder departs through the wormhole. The two TARDISes dematerialize themselves and the conversion planet, jump it 106 years into the future (to 2022), and use its power to convert the volcanos into steel.
The Doctor goes out and apologizes to the Qurunx, and asks it to channel its power into the conversion planet, freeing itself. The Master teleports into his TARDIS and stumbles out. The Doctor tells him that he's gambled and lost, and now his body is failing because of what he's put it through. The Master says that if he can't be the Doctor, neither can she, and triggers a remote that momentarily directs the Qurunx's energy into her. The Doctor is hit, and Yaz runs out and brings her into her TARDIS. The Doctor looks up at her extended fam surrounding her, and the TARDIS flies away as the conversion planet implodes and the Qurunx escapes.
Later, the Doctor wakes up and Yaz says that she took everyone else home. The Cloister Bell tolls and the Doctor staggers, and Yaz points out that the Doctor is regenerating. She says that she wants more time, and then tells Yaz that it's all right and Yaz should choose the flavor of ice cream they're getting. They float in space and sit on the TARDIS hovering above Earth, and eat ice cream. Yaz says that she doesn't want it to end, and the Doctor tells her that what she's had has been so special. She says that she loved being her, and thinks she needs to do the next bit alone. Yaz says that they shouldn't say goodbye.
The Doctor drops Yaz off on Earth, then departs in the TARDIS. Yaz finds Dan and Graham nearby, and they take her to a group that they've been invited to, with others of the Doctor's companions. They all share their adventures.
The Doctor staggers out of the TARDIS to see her last sunrise. She regenerates into...her previous tenth incarnation. "What... What...What?!"
