[7.6] Too heavy of a gun to make a third eye
cjonesas27 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Episode 2: A complete filler episode with little action, big development, some gory photography and basically contributing to near nothing after the good pilot. The rating goes to the development, good acting overall and creatures' grins!

Next time, whoever takes a shot at them, please aim for the head.

Episode 2

Warning: Spoilers
"The Way Things Are Now' was a step back in quality from the first episode, but still enough to keep me invested and intrigued and wanting to see what will happen in the end to these characters

I just feel like they sort of eased into the whole concept a little bit too quickly for this family. It would take a lot of getting used to and trying to understand how in all likelihood your life is over if you are trapped here and you can never go out at night.

But we'll see where they go from here. So far so good in terms of hooking this horror/thriller fan in with this new TV show from Epix and MGM+.

The Way Things Are Now
Prismark1014 September 2022
The Matthews family has ended up somewhere strange. They are not the only one in this eerie town.

The second episode has the Matthews split up. At the Colony House Tabitha gets a dose of reality from Donna. She has also been there as Donna gives a chilling insight as to how she ended up here. Donna also tells Tabitha what happened to her sister. The creatures are lethal and cruel.

Jim and his injured son stay in the RV. The sheriff has provided a Talisman. Outside at night there are strange noises outside that confuses and frightens Jim. The creatures are outside.

It is a episode that has tension but you are still getting used to the characters as you learn more about some of them.

The episode balances the new arrivals and the townsfolk. Although you sense that the population of the town will decrease by a few people by the end of the episode.

Too much exposition and nothing happening

Warning: Spoilers
Second episodes can be really hit or miss for me and this one was most definitely a miss. The writers spent the entire episode on filler conversations and cliches. I get that the show was going to tell us how the various residents of the mysterious town got trapped there but did they have to hit the viewer over the head with a sledgehammer? After the excellent Pilot, I was expecting better than this. WAY too much introspection and pontification to the point of being pretentious. Characters are all of a sudden cracking up and doing stupid things just to move the plot along. The young deputy, the cult leader lady, the weird girl, the creepy peach guy all delivering boring and confusing monologues with borderline amateur acting. I'm tired of cliche oddball characters in horror movies. I'm also sick of "tell instead of show" writing. I didn't need weird girl to TELL me that she left the hospital door open. I figured she did that when the night people were standing there and the nurse ran away from them. So what's the point of her saying she left it open? To somehow cleanse herself to the viewer and make us feel sorry for her? Then to make matters worse, the writers actually go completely unsubtle by having the diner lady break a glass and pick up the pieces to mimic the girl's strange story to her brother. You see, the girl just told her brother some pointless story about shards of broken glass, then she walks in on her co-worker picking up glass shards. It all comes together! But to cap it all off is the dumb plot convenience that on the SAME night that the deputy is doing all his drunken whining about his grandfather, the crazy girl just happens to murder the drunk newcomer in his hospital bed and uses him for a sacrifice that ends up killing the grandfather as collateral damage. It's so contrived and unearned to the point that I couldn't care less when the deputy was doing his big monologue to the Sheriff character. Speaking of, the only good stuff in the episode were the camper scenes with the Dad, the EMT girl, and the Sheriff, my 3 favorite characters from the much better Pilot episode, thus the 2 extra stars. More focus on these actual interesting characters and less throwing unearned dialogue and scenes to the less interesting ones, writers.

It's Time to get To The Getting
jamericanbeauty4 March 2022
A couple of tense scenes and a very effective creepy ending is not enough to hook an audience, at least not an addictive, repeat audience. I have patience. I appreciate a slow atmospheric horror like Crimson Peak or The Others (one of my favorite movies) and I enjoy slasher gore horror like Scream 1996. I have patience when I feel like a show (or movie) is going somewhere. Two episodes in, I don't feel like From is getting anywhere. I love Harold Perrineau, so I'll ride out it out two more episodes before I move on if this getting-nowhere pace continues.

Not 100% awful, but mostly
It's the acting that will probably drive me away. I specially the Webster kid. I guess there are a lot of people who need to be eaten. I'm not big on graphic horror but in this case I hope the body count increases and we get to watch.
