Sean Whalen plays a ghost who died of cholera and now resides in the basement. This is thematically similar to his role in the film The People Under the Stairs, which also features a group of sickly unfortunates trapped below a mansion.
The US series departs completely from the original BBC series humor as it establishes the nature of Sam's injury. While the pants-less ghost is still responsible, in the British version the protagonist is pushed out a window instead of accidentally falling as Sam does. This version also further explores the character of the ghosts, as it is revealed by the lady of the house that she died the same way, being murdered by her husband. None of these arcs are explored in this episode.
Crash (the ghost in the leather jacket) loses his head early on and spends the rest of the pilot walking around without it. He only appears in one other episode, wandering in the background. His head, however, has yet to be seen again.
This is odd, as it fell off in the middle of the room the ghosts most frequently gather in and isn't able to perambulate by itself. It should still be in full view right where it landed, but is not in any other scenes set in that room.
