- Captain Burnham and the U.S.S. Discovery race to stop Book and Ruon Tarka from launching a rogue plan that could inadvertently endanger the galaxy.
- Tarka and Book assemble the Isolytic weapon. Tarka need to calibrate it to destroy the controller but protect the power source under it. Tarka will do this by generating null space bubble within the Isolytic detonation field. Book is convinced that if does not act, many more lives will be lost. He asks Tarka to speed up the calibration process.
Vance allows Burnham to lead the mission to stop Book, but sends in another officer empowered to step in and destroy Book, if needed. Former Discovery security officer Nhan (Rachael Ancheril) is assigned to supervise the ship as it follows Burnham's tracking device, to ensure that Burnham does not allow her personal feelings to get in the way of stopping Book and Tarka.
They jump to a position near Book's ship, where Book and Tarka complete the weapon. Book has hidden his ship inside a rogue planet. Book's ship has a security field around it, so Burnham cannot beam her team on-board. The crew is still very split on what should Book's fate be when arrested. As per regulations, Book will be locked up for life for stealing Federation technology and for assembling a banned weapon. Some crew say that Federation is not acting fast enough, and Book is only trying to save lives.
Saru leads a cloaked shuttle to sneak aboard Book's ship and disable the weapon, but it is attacked by a new automated security system that Tarka installed on the exterior of Book's ship. Tarka cannot disengage the security system as it starts eating the shuttle. Book fires an EMP to disrupt the security system and allow the shuttle enough time to disengage and escape. The EMP creates a gap in Book's ship force field and allows Burnham to beam back her crew.
Book then finds the tracker and disables it. Book jumps into the DMA, and Discovery follows. Nhan prepares to order that Book's ship be destroyed before it can attack the controller at the center of the DMA. Nhan gives this order as Book has no plan to stop Book and Tarka from firing their weapon at the DMA controller. Discovery would have to fire and jump away, just in case the explosion triggers the Isolytic weapon to also go off.
Burnham asks Stamets to map all the remaining planets in the sub-sector for their Boronite content and use the previous DMA jumping data to predict where it might go next. If Burnham can determine the DMAs timetable, she might be able to convince Book to stand down.
The Discovery continues hunting for Book's ship and the 2 ships attack each other as they find themselves within the DMA. Burnham wanted to destroy Book's scanners, but he escapes. Nhan is livid that Burnham let go of a shot to destroy Book.
Burnham orders the Discovery to stand between Book's ship and the Controller. Book tries to jump multiple times, but Discovery matches their jumps and always blocks their shot. This prompts Tarka to attack Discovery with a full spread of Quantum torpedoes. Both ships find the controller, and there is a stand-off in which Burnham is able to convince both Nhan and Book to stand down. She tells Book that the DMA will take another 154 hours to collect the Boronite in the sector and jump again, by which time they would make first contact with the 10-C. If that fails, the Federation will back Book and Tarka's plan to destroy the controller. Book agrees to the deal, but Tarka needs the power source to go to his parallel universe.
Tarka goes behind Book's back and fires the weapon at the controller, destroying it and the DMA, but he does not find the power source that he expected to be there. Tarka concludes that the DMA was powered from the other side of the wormhole.
Saru asks advise from Culber as President T'Rina has asked him out for a date. Saru admits that he has feelings for her. Culber encourages Saru to go ahead.
Book and Tarka escape, and a new DMA appears in the same location soon after.
