When David and Caoimhe are dealt an intersex diagnosis for their newborn and told of an upcoming surgical decision they must keep strictly secret, David shuts down and leaves the hospital in silence. His child's gender ambiguity has triggered memories of being bullied on his father's farm for being unmasculine, and he doubts his ability as a father and even as a man. He emerges only to help his father with lambing season.
