- Open with Puck arriving at a school sporting a newly shaved head. He had to have his mohak shaved when his mother spotted a mole and took him to the doctor. He's upset because other students are now looking him in the eye and the nerds throw him in a dumpster. Puck thinks dating a cheerleaders (Mercedes) will be a way to get him rep together.
After getting tired, Rachel secretly audio tapes practice and gives Will a list of the Glee club members she doesn't feel are pulling their weight: "This is half the club," he says.
Puck asks Mercedes if she'd be up to fool around. She's not interested for a number of reasons.
Will is upset so many club members have been slacking and tells them the point of glee is for many voices coming together at one. The assignment is for them to come out with a song that represents their voice and sing it solo in front of the whole club.
Kurt's dad Burt shows up at school to take Finn to a baseball game. Kurt is upset he wasn't invited.
Puck continues to hit on Mercedes without success. Rachel is first to perform a solo, "The Climb," by Miley Cyrus. She is terrible. Will thinks she's lost her voice.
Kurt tells Sue he missed Cheerios practice because he's upset about his sexuality. She tells him to get over it.
Cut to Kurt dressed in flannel telling his dad he's going to sing a "Pink Houses" because it was brave of John Mellencamp to write about "bold interior design." Kurt asks his dad to go gets burgers with him and tell him more about Mellencamp.
Rachel sees a doctor who tells her she has tonsillitis and should have them removed. She's concerned it might affect her voice and he starts her on antibiotics. Rachel asks Finn what she should do and this leads to a debate over her still having feelings for Jesse.
Finn sings "Jesse's Girl" as his solo and everybody loves it. Puck jumps up and sings Sammy Davis Jr.'s version of "Lady Is a Tramp" with jazz horn back-up. The style is directed at Mercedes and she eats it up, eventually jumping in and helping him finish.
Mercedes tells Quinn she's surprised to be interested in Puck. Quinn gives her the go-ahead to see him, but reminds her that he's using her for popularity. Mercedes doesn't seem to care. Quinn tells her Santana will be furious.
Dressed like a trucker, Kurt performs "Pink Houses." The club looks perplexed by the choice and Will thinks Kurt missed the point and tells him "don't lose track of who you are." Brittany thinks the song was hot and asks if he wants to fool around.
Rachel's tonsils aren't improving and she feels like she's going to have to have surgery. She thinks she needs her voice and applause to live.
We see Kurt and Brittany fooling around on a couch in his house. Burt catches them and is confused by what is going on but says he respects whatever Kurt wants to do.
Mercedes is teaching Puck about how to be a good boyfriend. Puck hears from the nerds that his cool meter is off the chart and they're scared off him again. Mercedes and Santana perform "The Boy Is Mine" and we see clips of them fighting over Puck. Will has to separate them afterwards.
Mercedes is upset to see Puck tossing nerds into dumpsters.
Finn brings Rachel to see Sean, a football buddy who was paralyzed during a game. Sean reminds her that nobody is just one thing.
Mercedes quits Cheerios. She tells Sue "it's just not who I am." Mercedes tell Puck she feels the need to be true to who she is.
Even after walking into school hand-in-hand with Brittany Burt takes Finn out for another function. This leads to a full Broadway style rendition of "Rose's Turn." He finishes in an empty auditorium with his father clapping. Burt and Kurt have it out over father-son expectations. Kurt says Burt's relationship with Finn breaks his heart. Burt tells him "your job is to be yourself." The hug and tells each other they love each other.
Rachel goes back to visit Sean by herself. She thanks him and offers to give him singing lessons once a week. Her voice is back without the surgery but she isn't scared anymore. She takes his hand and they do U2's "One." This leads to the entire club performing the song.
