Horror movies are only as good as the monsters that inhabit them. From Michael Myers to Jason Voorhees, the slasher genre in particular has created some of the most iconic and distinctive looking mass murderers ever to grace the silver screen. Arguably no other slasher has maintained more mainstream exposure or than the nightmare-stalking Freddy Krueger – played to glorious effect by actor Robert Englund. However, the now legendary Freddy once looked quite different. Bloody Disgusting (follow the link to see the images) has some new pictures that show how Freddy’s look for Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street films was almost significantly different. This transformation is chronicled in the crowd-funded documentary Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy. His trademark sweater was always present, but it had no sleeves, and instead of a fedora, the supernatural serial killer adorned his head with ...

Can you imagine Freddy Krueger without his famed fedora? Now you don't have to. Here's the "Newsies" version Wes Craven and company almost went with, before settling on the iconic look we know today (courtesy Bloody-Disgusting): Doesn't quite have the same feel, does it? It's fascinating to wonder whether the paperboy cap and sleeveless (!) red-and-green sweater would have doomed the franchise before it even began. We'll never know, but it's fun to speculate as a sort of "Sliding Doors"-esque scenario. The photo, in case you were wondering, comes courtesy of Thommy Hutson, who wrote and directed the excellent four-hour documentary "Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy," which covers all films in the "Nightmare on Elm Street" series except the much-criticized 2010 remake. Trust: it's a must-see for any hardcore fan of the series. Navigate over to Bloody-Disgusting to see an additional image that features a number of different...

ScreamFest La is now in full swing, and I could not be more ready for a week+ of horror movies from some of the best up-and-coming horror producers/directors in the world! I attended opening night on Tuesday and was treated to Epic Pictures & The October Society’s horror anthology Tales Of Halloween. The film included ten short terrifying—and sometimes hilarious—films from the likes of Adam Gierasch (Fertile Ground, Night Of The Demons), Andrew Kasch (Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy), Axelle Carolyn (Centurion, Soulmate), Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw 2-4), Dave Parker (The Hills Run Red), John Skipp (Nightmare On Elm Street 5: The Dream Child), Lucky Mckee (The Woman), Mike Mendez (The Gravedancers), Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers, The Descent), Paul Solet (Grace), and Ryan Schifrin (Abominable).
There are quite a few horror movies reaching the silver screen this weekend, but Tales Of Halloween is the perfect film for the season.

To celebrate the October 16th release of the horror anthology Tales of Halloween, Daily Dead spoke to the filmmakers behind the movie to discuss the project, their individual contributions, and more.
The only directing duo contributing to Tales of Halloween, John Skipp (writer of A Nightmare on Elm Street 5) and Andrew Kasch (Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy) have a lot to say about making a movie with their friends and the current state of horror. Their segment, “This Means War,” about a pair of neighbors feuding over Halloween decorations, deals with this very subject.
One of the things I love about Tales of Halloween is that so many of the segments deal with different aspects of the holiday. Yours tackles Halloween decorations... sort of. Where did the inspiration for your short, "This Means War", come from?

In the 2010 documentary Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy, Wes Craven predicts that when he dies his obituaries will say “Probably best known for inventing Freddy Krueger.” When he passed away last Sunday the New York Times headline read “Wes Craven, Whose Slasher Films Terrified Millions, Dies at 76,” but the second paragraph of his obit did say, “perhaps Mr. Craven’s most famous creation was the serial killer Freddy Krueger, played by Robert Englund, who, with his razor-blade glove, haunted the dreams of high school students in ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ and its sequels.”Though he had been making films for 12 years, starting with the Bergman-inspired Last House on the Left in 1972—not to mention a few years of making porn films before that—it was A Nightmare on Elm Street, a little indie horror film that he both wrote and directed, that made Wes Craven’s fortune.

It has been a while since Freddy Krueger graced the big screen, but you can't keep a good man (or, for that matter, a deranged maniac) down. This month sees the publication of author Thommy Hutson's excellent new book Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy while a version of Freddy's distinctive glove makes an appearance in the new trailer for the comedy-drama Buzzard. Written and directed by Joel Potrykus, the film concerns a small-time con artist in possession of what the official synopsis describes as "a pocket full of bogus checks, a dangerously altered Nintendo Power Glove, and a bad temper.

Anthology horror films are a tricky beast. The rule of thumb is, usually only half of the segments are generally satisfying while the remainder leave a lot to be desired (save for the few successes such as Asylum, Creepshow, and Trick ‘r Treat). Epic Pictures Group recently announced that they will help produce a new horror anthology set for release next year around Halloween. The new anthology, Tales of Halloween, is based on a concept created by Soulmate director Axelle Carolyn.
Twitch reports:
The ten stories will be woven together by their shared theme of Halloween night in an American suburb, where ghouls, imps, aliens and axe murderers appear for one night only to terrorize unsuspecting residents. Apart from Carolyn the list of directors, under the name The October Society, includes her husband Neil Marshall (The Descent), Mike Mendez (Big Ass Spider!), Joe Begos (Almost Human), Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II,...

Every year, crackling bonfires, a steaming witch’s brew, and the crunch of dead leaves come together for a creepy Halloween night concoction that makes one feel like anything could happen. Michael Dougherty’s 2007 anthology film Trick ’r Treat certainly embraced the magic of this night and now a group of directors collectively called The October Society have begun development on Tales of Halloween.
A film featuring ten interconnected segments from 11 directors, Tales of Halloween begins shooting this November. Horror readers fond of the splatterpunk genre may be happy to hear that John Skipp, co-author of The Light at the End, the sought after Fright Night novelization, Animals, and many more novels will co-direct one of the segments with Andrew Kasch (Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy). Neil Marshall (The Descent),Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II, III & IV), and Mike Mendez (Big Ass Spider!) are among the other directors.

Horror movie fans have a new anthology film project in development called Tales of Halloween. The film follows in the footsteps of previously released horror anthologies such as the Trick 'r Treat, V/H/S, and The ABCs of Death. I've always enjoyed watching movies like this! I grew up on films and shows such as Tales From the Crypt, Black Sabbath, Tales From the Dark Side, and the Creepshow. As long as Tales of Halloween turns out to be fun and entertaining I'll watch it.
The news come from Deadline, who reports that the movie will consist of ten segments from eleven directors. It will be an interconnected series of stories, and they will all be set in "a sleepy American suburb terrorized by ghouls, aliens, and killers one Halloween night."

The offerings on the big screen for Halloween this weekend are pretty weak with the only straight-up horror film in wide release being last weekend's holdover of Ouija. But if you're looking for a fun, thrilling, crazy ride, you should definitely check out Nightcrawler with Jake Gyllenhaal. However, it seems appropriate as All Hallow's Eve approaches that we get news of a holiday centric horror anthology in the works. Following in the footsteps of films like V/H/S and The ABCs of Death, Epic Pictures Group is working on a new collection of horror shorts called Tales of Halloween, with 10 segments from 11 directors. More below! Deadline reports filmmakers include Darren Bousman (Saw II, III and IV), Neil Marshall ("Game of Thrones," The Descent), Joe Begos (Almost Human, not the TV show), Axelle Carolyn (Soulmate), Adam Gierasch (Night of the Demons), Andrew Kasch (Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy...

Do you like your horror in easily digestible bite-sized pieces thrown together by a spooky wraparound story? That’s right, you got it, I’m referring to the horror genre’s latest trend – anthology franchises. As V/H/S and The ABC’s Of Death have proven, fans are happily gobbling up this new stylistic angle, and now there’s another one afoot. Deadline reports that the Epic Pictures Group are assembling a new anthology called Tales Of Halloween.
The report suggests that this new approach will enlist a great many horror maestros for the upcoming outing. The biggest names leading the pack are Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers, The Descent) and Darren Bousman (Saw), who’ll no doubt attract fans who may not be familiar with some of the lesser-known filmmakers. That’s inevitably one of the most promising aspects of this type of film; offering fledgling directors the opportunity...

“We have such sights to show you.” Have you ever wanted to look beyond the sights provided by Pinhead in Hellraiser and Hellbound: Hellraiser II? If so, you’re in for a treat, as a new trailer has been released for Leviathan: The Story of Hellraiser and Hellbound: Hellraiser II, an upcoming documentary exploring the first two movies in Clive Barker’s terrifying film franchise that stemmed from his 1986 horror novella, The Hellbound Heart.
It’s been over 25 years since Clive Barker wrote and directed the film adaptation of his own novella in 1987, so this seems like a great time to look back on the two films that spawned a popular horror film franchise. With over four hours of interviews and plenty of never before seen photos, Leviathan seeks to do for Pinhead and company what Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy and Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History of Friday the 13th...

Robert Englund calls it “a junior high school shop project from hell.” The man who played iconic horror villain Freddy Krueger in eight feature films isn’t talking about a poorly constructed student project like the block of wood I received an F+ for in 8th grade. Enlgund instead describes a weapon composed of razor-sharp steel and leather: Freddy Krueger’s bladed glove from A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) and its seven sequels.
Crudely made in a boiler room that was Freddy’s own private hell on earth for children, the bladed glove is an iconic piece of horror cinema, and it’s just one of many topics from the Elm Street movies featured in directors Daniel Farrands and Andrew Kasch’s meticulous 2010 documentary film, Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy, which was released recently as a two-disc Collector’s Edition Blu-ray.

Captain Phillips The wave of love and appreciation for movies today is interesting. When Captain Phillips was released you would have thought Tom Hanks was the greatest living actor and now today most everyone has dialed it back to "well, it was a pretty good final 15 minutes." Perhaps maybe once people watch it again at home they'll finally come around to agreeing with me that Danielle Albert also delivers a great performance. Maybe, but I'm not holding my breath.
