What happens when you sell your creative integrity?
jonsefcik28 June 2018
Your YouTube channel goes down the tubes, that's what!

Let me start by saying I'm only rating their 2005-2013 videos a 7. All things considered it would be a 6 or 5.

My friend introduced me to Smosh in 2009 and was immediately hooked. The appeal of Smosh's earlier videos was in their simplicity and accessibility. They had so much charm because you could tell there were no cynical intentions; it was just two best friends having fun by making these simple and silly but very fun videos on this new website called YouTube. The classic age of Smosh, around 2005-2009, was extremely amateurish, with a low resolution camera, awkward acting, and bad effects, but they at least made up for it with the humor.

Around 2009 or so, they really hit their stride, leading to the golden age of Smosh, around 2010-2012. They got a better camera, a few friends to help, better effects, and Ian and Anthony had clearly gotten much more comfortable on camera. This is when they had the highest, most consistent quality content. Sure their videos had higher production value, but you could tell the heart of the show was still these two best friends having fun making these wacky videos. The humor kept getting better and better, and even more absurdist and juvenile. The screaming and yelling was more pronounced here, but never got overbearing.

Slowly, around late 2013 and into 2014, the feel of the entire show began to change. The regular cast was expanding. They stopped filming in their house (a staple of all their earlier work) and were clearly using sets. The humor started changing, too. The insane, absurdist humor was slowly morphing into typical sarcastic millennial humor. It turned out Ian and Anthony stopped writing their videos and instead hired interns to continue writing. The overall quality of their videos slowly began to decline. Smosh had gone from a YouTube channel all about two friends having fun making silly videos to a cynical money-hungry business. Smosh was solidified as a brand when Anthony officially left, citing disappointment in his lack of creative control. Had this happened 5 or 6 years ago, Smosh would have been declared broken up or on hiatus, since he and Ian were the sole creative contributors. Today it's a different story. Ian remains as part of a large new ensemble cast that is projected to have actors come and go over the years and essentially turn it into an unfunny YouTube SNL.

I hope Ian and Anthony can work together in the future outside of Smosh because their chemistry, enthusiasm, creativity, and innocence were what made their older videos so great. Even in their more recent videos where they react to their old videos, you can still see the spark in their eyes.

Hit and Miss
peterdfinn25 September 2009
Smosh is a web show created by two guys named Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox. It's basically different comedy sketches. It kind of reminds me of MADtv (and I mean that in a good way).

It's hit and miss, but when it hits, it hits hard! Some of their best videos so far include: "Smosh Short 2: Stranded," all the "Food Battle" videos, "That Damn Neighbor," "That Damn Yard Sale," "That Damn Prison Break," "How Not to Act on a First Date," "Easy Step," "License Test," "Quest for the Scooter," Santa Is Real!," "Cat Soup," Left Handed," "Going to the Mountains," "A Hairy Situation," "A Very Hairy Situation," "Washington's First Video Blog," "The Ultimate Shoedown," and "If Movies Were Real."

Greatest thing to come to YouTube!
Poison1234624 September 2009
Sure, Smosh's humour isn't the wittiest. But it brings more originality to YouTube. Forget Fred or Phil. Phil is just another vlog (boring) and Fred just uses the squeaky voice to "try" and make his videos "funny" (awful) Smosh just puts the fun back into YouTube without bringing corporate mongers into the picture. They really make YouTube worth going to, especially when I see a new video from them. I always check YouTube every Friday (sometimes it takes 2 weeks for them to add a new video, though) but it's always worth the wait because I know I'll get a good laugh in after a hard day's work.

To the point, Smosh (along with Nigahiga) brings more originality to YouTube and that's why they're the greatest things on YouTube.

A+ to EVERY episode ever made!
kadesmum18 April 2016
Smosh is the greatest thing to ever come to YouTube by far! They're freaking EXTREMELY hilarious! Words can't explain how funny every episode is and I'm no where NEAR exaggerating! I am 3 videos away from watching every single episode. Once you watch even half a episode you can't stop watching-or laughing your butt off! Another great thing about Smosh is they NEVER EVER (and I mean NEVER) make a fart or butt joke! One of the most hilarious things they do is they always make references to really famous animé, and I mean always! Not only do they make hilarious references to animé, but they also make TONS of references to movies!

Smosh: Crass, inappropriate & cringeworthy
avoidingspamonline10 February 2014
Smosh used to produce some pretty decent comedy videos but lately they have lowered their target demographic. It's much easier to produce content for teens and preteens because they are less discerning and are more likely to simply follow a trend. Being held to a lower standard means you can produce more videos across a range of different channels, maximising views. More views means more money and making money seems to be Smosh's only goal these days.

Business is business, but once your credibility is lost, it is incredibly difficult to regain. Their videos are now crass, inappropriate and cringeworthy!

There's Anthony
hazzaisfabulous8 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Smosh has always been one of the best channels on Youtube. From 2005 to 2014, Smosh continually grew and developed into a Youtube comedy powerhouse. When Anthony left, Smosh did lose a little bit of magic. However, after leaving Defy, Smosh continually added funny, charming and loveable cast members, to such a point where the channel started to feel just shy of perfect.

Then, ANTHONY CAME BACK. The new cast and the original creators have combined! A mix of the classic humour of the old sketches, mixed with the insane talent of the new cast make the new Smosh the best version of the channel yet.

The most enjoyable channel on Youtube!!

Smosh Was Awesome When I Started Watching Them. Unfortunately, Not Anymore.
adog20015 March 2021
Back story: when I was 10 in 2011, my older sister showed me the Happy Cow video Ian and Anthony did and I loved it so much and became addicted to Smosh...until early 2015. They went a bit downhill in 2014 but they still had Ian and Anthony and random actors. But in 2015 they chose buttload of "actors" who were on their channel on a regular basis and were not funny in the slightest! I am sure they are good people in real life, but as actors on smosh, they are just not as humorous as Ian and Anthony themselves. Once Anthony left Smosh, Smosh was a dead channel to me. However, I do enjoy Anthony's channel today. If you want something involved with Ian and Anthony in Smosh, watch their content from 2005-2014, or watch Anthony's channel. The REAL Smosh was only Ian and Anthony and a few other actors who barely appeared, like the Food Battle guy and Ian's mom.

Not what it used to be
camtcox12 May 2020
I grew up a Smosh fan since I was a kid. Anthony and Ian were so fun to watch with their chemistry and the humor they created together. But when Anthony left to do his own thing, part of the spirit of Smosh went away with him. Since then the quality has decreased steadily. They should've ended it when Anthony left.

Not Funny Anymore
Michael-63566429 May 2021
I was watching since the classic Ian and Anthony for years. I thought they were funny as hell. It was like that for 5 years till Anthony announced he was leaving. After that, the skits became very unfunny. The new actors give me a headache. They try to make it funny by making a small situation a huge deal. Which obviously won't work to achieve Comedy. If you happen to be a long gone subscriber that found this channel again, go back to the old videos. The new ones will ruin your love for Smosh.

Funny At Times...Painful At Others
framptonhollis7 January 2016
The channel "Smosh" has been popular on YouTube for quite some time, and it has kept its popularity on YouTube for quite some time. With so many subscribers, there's obviously many people that love this channel, and obviously many people who hate it, but I fall somewhere in between, leaning more towards the side that loves it.

"Smosh" delivers a really wacky, surreal, and dark style of comedy, which sometimes is really hilarious and clever, but, at others, is just obnoxious. A lot of it is just people shouting for no apparent reason, and there's tons of pretty lame and stupid jokes. Sometimes it's just randomness being random for the sake of randomness, or references for the sake of being references so maybe the title can attract a lot of people who say "Hey, I've heard of this!" However, "Smosh" also provides a lot of pretty funny jokes here and there, including some self deprecation, witty satire, surprisingly dark humor (for such a large fanbase that it), and really bizarre and surreal comedic elements.

The production quality is also really good. The first "Smosh" videos didn't really have production quality, it was just two guys doing some wacky and funny stuff in front of a video camera, but, no that it has become so big in the YouTube community, the production that goes into their videos has gone way up. You could look at this both positively and negatively. On one side, the video's are much more well made, but, on the other side, it starts to miss some of its more homemade-ness, and begins to feel more like some kind of corporate product rather than something made for fun.

Overall, "Smosh" has its positive elements and negative elements, forcing some people to hate it and others to love it. I'd probably recommend you check out some of their videos if you haven't already. If you love them, I'll understand, and, if you hate them, I'll understand.
