During the masked ball, Horace Derwent (John Durbin) commands a man in a dog costume called Rover to sit down. This is a reference to a scene in the book where Derwent was revealed to have a young lover called Roger who performed oral sex on him while dressed as a dog. This was loosely referenced but never fully explained in The Shining (1980), during the scene where Wendy sees a man in a bear costume perform fellatio on an unknown man dressed in a tuxedo.
The ghost of Horace Derwent (John Durbin) says the line "Great party, isn't?" The same line was also used in The Shining (1980) by the Injured Guest, who remained anonymous. However, the movie's sequel Doctor Sleep (2019) also identified the Injured Guest as Horace Derwent.
