Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story premiered on Netflix on Sept. 19 and instantly rose to the peak of the top 10 most popular shows ranking. The series, which is the second installment in Ryan Murphy's killer anthology series Monster, has earned its criticisms, but there's no doubt it will also achieve acclaim in its inevitable viewership success.
Particularly, the performances of series stars Nicholas Chavez and Cooper Koch deserve celebration, as they sank their teeth into difficult material and conveyed the heart of these characters. Koch himself delivers an immediately show-stopping performance as Erik. The actor was the sole focus of episode 5, a one-take masterclass in emotional conviction and presence as a performer.
Cooper Koch was 'nervous' but 'okay' with past nude scenes
But there's another aspect of Koch's performance in Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story that will draw attention. In the season's third episode, there's a...

On Sept. 19, Netflix dropped the second season of its Emmy-winning anthology series Monster with the release of Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. The show tells the story of Lyle and Erik Menendez whose trial made headlines back in the 90s as the brothers were tried for the murders of their parents, Jose and Kitty.
The series is rated TV-ma, which means the show is meant for mature viewing audiences and not recommended for younger viewers. In the case of Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, the show’s TV-ma was given due to the show’s inclusion of nudity, violence, sexual abuse, child abuse, and drug use, among other items. This is a show that most certainly earned its TV-ma rating and is not recommended for younger audiences, and parents will want to read up on the content of the show before determining whether it might be...

Bush are gearing up for a 2024 tour in support of their recent compilation Loaded: The Greatest Hits 1994-2023 (enter to win tickets here), but Gavin Rossdale and Corey Britz still found some time to stop by The Today Show and perform their classic songs “Glycerine” and “Swallowed.”
While participating in the annual Citi Concert Series in New York, Rossdale and Britz opted for what they jokingly referred to as the “sad piano version” of “Swallowed.” Rossdale explained, “We’re doing something we’ve never done before, because that’s how we roll.”

2023 was a solid year for horror films, and even still, there were plenty of gems that went criminally underseen. Fortunately, because horror fans are some of the most rabid (see: passionate) fans around, even movies denied multi-million dollar ad campaigns can still find their people through word-of-mouth praise, fan art, and obsessive gushing. "The Ruins," "Jamie Marks is Dead," "Swallowed," and "Midnight Kiss" director Carter Smith's latest feature film is also his best, which is why it's such a shame that "The Passenger" (read our review here) is only now picking up mainstream attention. A thrilling two-hander starring horror fan favorite Kyle Gallner and relative newcomer Johnny Berchtold, "The Passenger" is the spiritual successor to Robert Harmon's "The Hitcher," and just as brutal.

Hollywood reeled in 2023. There’s no way around that. From striking creatives to the existential crisis of theatrical futures, this year held the entire entertainment industry in its death-like grasp. But as they say, when the going gets tough, the tough double down on the audience least likely to abandon ship. And anyone who’s actually sat and counted how many annual horror conventions there are knows exactly which audience to bet on.
It’s entirely possible that horror is the most stable and reliable movie genre, but just because its demographic is almost certainly the most voracious doesn’t mean they’re the least discerning. If anything, the list of films that almost made our top 10 would alone be ample ballast for the argument that horror aficionados cast their nets wider than fans of other genres. Take this list as a starting point, and then take it way further than you ever dared.

Bush have announced a career-spanning greatest hits compilation, Loaded: The Greatest Hits 1994-2023, out November 10th via Round Hill Records.
The UK alt-rockers shared the news alongside a new song that’s included on the comp entitled “Nowhere to Go But Everywhere” — the namesake of the group’s North American tour this fall. The track is a heavy grunger with surging power chords and a standout vocal performance from frontman Gavin Rossdale.
The rest of the collection will cull from Bush’s extensive back catalog, with the tracklist flowing chronologically from the band’s ’90s glory days up through its prolific post-2010 output following the 2011 comeback effort, The Sea of Memories.
“I’m really grateful that I get the chance to make music after all of this time,” Gavin Rossdale commented in a press release. “The privilege is not lost on me. I’m still in the octagon, and I...

Not to be confused with the Spanish road trip horror of the same name, The Passenger, the new film from Carter Smith, opens with a woman, blood spurting from her eye socket crawling towards a young boy. It’s a nightmare and Randy is woken from it to start another tedious day at Burgers, Burgers, Burgers. He should have taken it as an omen and stayed home.
As they’re getting the diner ready to open one of the other employees starts harassing him, something that seems to be a regular occurrence. Benson watches in disgust before walking out to have a smoke. Then, as if something just snapped he pulls a shotgun from his car and goes back inside killing everyone except Randy whom he takes hostage.

There’s more than one way to be a passenger in life, not all of which involve vehicles. That’s certainly the case when it comes to the protagonist in Carter Smith’s propulsive new thriller, which functions like a therapy session on wheels between a murderous shrink and an unwilling patient. If the two of them don’t exactly paint the town red during their would-be getaway, it’s only because their journey was precipitated by a shocking act of violence in their place of business and they now have to keep a low profile. “The Passenger” does as well, and proves sneakily effective with its low-key approach to several kinds of violence.

"If I'm gonna help you, then I can't have you getting in my way. Because it forces me to hurt you. I need you to work with me, not against me." Paramount and MGM+ have revealed an official trailer for an action thriller horror crossover called The Passenger, the latest from the genre filmmaker Carter Smith. Not to be confused with Jack Nicholson's 1975 film also called The Passenger. This is a Blumhouse production, produced by Jason Blum, that will be dropping on VOD directly in August. A man is forced to face his fears and confront his troubled past. He must find a way to survive when his co-worker snaps and goes on a violent killing spree, taking him along for the ride. This one stars Kyle Gallner, Johnny Berchtold, Liza Weil, with Merah Benoit and Morgana Shaw. An unsettling trailer that gets uncomfortable by the end, but that's the point of this film.

Plot: After the alleged suicide of her priest brother, Grace travels to the remote Scottish convent where he fell to his death. Distrusting the Church’s account, she uncovers murder, sacrilege, and a disturbing truth about herself.
Review: Hailing from Scotland, Consecration provides a look at grief and identity. Jena Malone stars as Grace, a woman who’s struggling through life, even more so now that her brother has supposedly killed himself. She journeys to Scotland in order to take care of his affairs. But there’s clearly more to his death than it appears and sends Grace on a journey of discovery. What she finds may be surprising to her, but if you’ve seen any sort of horror movie, will be old hat to you. Because unfortunately, while Consecration looks good, there’s not much more beneath the surface.
I really love Jena Malone and could watch her in just about anything.

Carter Smith’s debut film “The Ruins” was a slight dalliance into the body horror genre that was unnerving but also never went “full Cronenberg” in its approach. The film had great actors, and there was scope and intention, but it ultimately felt a bit hollow. With “Swallowed,” Smith returns to the body horror genre with more intention and a unique approach, but, like “The Ruins,” the film still feels unwilling to embrace its many disparate elements and genres to form a cohesive creature feature.

Jena Malone (The Ruins, Neon Demon), Mark Patton (A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge), Cooper Koch (Blumhouse’s They/Them), and debuting talent Jose Colon star.
We were told last year, “Dripping with blood and pus, Swallowed is queer body horror with all the naked flesh and shocking violations of a classic midnight movie.”

Popcorn Frights Film Festival announced today its juried and audience awards that were selected from its lineup of 113 films (36 features and 77 short films from 20 countries) in 10 categories.
This year’s jury consisted of members of national media and local filmmakers, who chose to honor Florida filmmaker Sylvia Caminer’s Follow Her with the Jury Prize for Best Feature Film.
In announcing the Feature Film Prize for the film, the jury said the following: “A socially relevant horror movie for modern times, Sylvia Caminer’s Follow Her features a completely unpredictable screenplay by star Dani Barker with a twist at the end that rivals The Sixth Sense. Caminer’s directing style is near perfection, and we can’t wait to ‘follow her’ into her next film.”
Accepting her award, Sylvia Caminer said, “Winning the Jury Prize for Best Film is such an incredible honor as the level of programming at Popcorn...

’00s teenagers and fans of particularly gnarly horror will remember The Ruins fondly; a rare, hyper-gory post-Saw squirm-a-thon that’s only won more fans in the years since its first bow. Director and photographer Carter Smith’s latest however – only his second feature since that cult debut in 2006 – is a completely different animal entirely. A thinner, cheaper, queerer and potentially more interesting thriller that shifts both gears, and genres, throughout.
Up front, Swallowed is a thin-on-the-ground drug story; starry-eyed Benjamin (Cooper Koch) is on the verge of a big move to LA to chase fame as a porn star. But his final night with boyfriend Dom (Jose Colon) goes off the rails, when a get rich quick scheme leaves them both choking down baggies full of mysterious powder to smuggle across the US-Canadian border – a move that goes from bad to body horror when a bag splits and an already...

Fashion photographer turned genre filmmaker Carter Smith’s unsettling survival and body horror Swallowed, screened in Fantasia’s ‘Queer Genre Cinema Spotlight’ section, and centres on two friends who put themselves in a compromising position.
Celebrating his impending move to Los Angeles to become a gay porn actor, Benjamin is looking forward to escaping his small hometown of Maine. Unbeknownst to him, his friend Dom, has set up an illegal drug run to help fund his Californian adventure. Failing to see the perils of the endeavour, things quickly go awry, as the pair find themselves an ever-evolving nightmare.

In conversation with Eye For Film out of Fantasia, Smith discussed expanding the representation of queer characters and stories, and genre cinema’s historic reluctance towards diverse representation.

There’s a moment in the Netflix film “The Old Guard” where Marwan Kenzari is sitting, handcuffed in a car, surrounded by guards, next to his partner passed out. And a shitty cop says “what is he, your boyfriend?.” All the cops giggle like morons. And then, Marwan proceeds to give one of the most beautiful speeches about love, ending in, “he’s not my boyfriend, he’s all and he’s more.” And then they kiss. And oh, what a kiss. The next time you see them, they are walking out of that armored van having knocked out all the guards. Not only did that monologue make me cry, but I was so overwhelmed to finally see two openly gay characters in a superhero movie wax poetic about love and then kick major ass. It made me realize that that’s what I’m craving in cinema. I want us to be the superhero,...

Carter Smith’s feature debut, 2008’s The Ruins, unleashed brutal body horror, not for the squeamish. While the director’s latest, Swallowed, presents a return to the realm of body horror, it adheres closer to the queer life crisis theme of Smith’s Into the Dark: Midnight Kiss with its overarching narrative. Body horror incites a metamorphosis for its lead character and the […]

"You don't want them hatching in there, okay?" Oh hell no. An early promo trailer has debuted for an indie horror thriller titled Swallowed, the latest from filmmaker Carter Smith. Not to be confused with the other body horror film Swallow, with Haley Bennett, this one is a bit different. The film follows two best friends on their final night together in a small town, with a nightmare of drugs, bugs and horrific intimacy. Oh boy, this sounds gross. "Dripping with blood and pus, Swallowed is queer body horror with all the naked flesh and shocking violations of a classic midnight movie." I definitely don't want to know what's in those drug packets that are actually egg sacs. Eww. Starring Jena Malone, Mark Patton, Cooper Koch, and Jose Colon. The film is premiering at a few genre festivals this summer, hence the teaser before it debuts. Enjoy. Here's the promo...

With a little more than a month to go until Fantasia returns in person in Montreal (July 14th - August 3rd), North America's biggest genre film festival has unveiled their second wave of titles and events and there are plenty of heavy hitters on deck. Kc Carthew's Polaris is set to open the fest on July 14th, this post-apocalyptic adventure is a graduate of the Frontieres film market back in 2019 and marks the director's second feature. Also included in this round of films is a queer genre focus with films like SXSW Alum, Hypochondriac, Carter Smith's Swallowed, queer wrestling doc, Out in the Ring, Eduardo Casanova's La Pieta, and more. Fantasia also brings the North American premiere of the hotly anticipated Shin Ultraman film...
