Doesn't Do Much for Canadian-American Relations
Jack White leads his band in a variety act which is clearly very polished -- so much so that it lacks much in the way of spontaneity. There are two singing acts that he introduces with a lot of patter and which he then proceeds to interrupt. After the ladies leave, he continues his patter with punning wisecracks as he makes his way through "Laugh Clown Laugh" without raising much more than a forced grin.
There were other acts of this nature -- Jimmy Durante kept doing it throughout his life. Mr. White's personality is not larger than life, like Jimmy's, but gauged for the theater balcony. Director Brian Foy seems to be doing little more than recording his stage act. He would soon retreat to the safety of the production office, where he would run Warner Brother's B unit for a long time.
