Ahead of the film’s world premiere at Fantasia this summer, the next film from The Adams Family has received a release date this week.
Shudder will premiere Hell Hole on August 23, Rue Morgue first reported.
Fantasia previews, “A road trip through Canadian oil fields conjured up fantasies of secrets deep in the dirt for the Adams family, and inspired them to create Hell Hole, an indie rock-n-roll monster movie set at a far-away fracking site.
“Known for their DIY ethos, John and Lulu Adams and Toby Poser, partnering with Shudder, have joined the team behind The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs and FX legend Todd Masters to shoot their latest in Serbia with a local cast and crew.
“Absurd, mutinous, and transgressively comical, Hell Hole is old-school sci-fi horror, yet in typical family fashion, they subvert the genre with textures of biological and environmental horror in tandem with...

The talented Adams Family’s hit film “Hellbender” was ranked No. 1 on Rotten Tomatoes Top 10 of best-rated horror films of 2022. Their most recent film, “Where the Devil Roams,” was purchased by Tubi after premiering at Montreal’s Fantasia Film Festival on July 27th.
Alongside parents John and Toby Adams, sisters Zelda and Lulu are experiencing a meteoric rise in the horror genre. In addition to writing her first feature length screenplay, Lulu was recently spotted on set of the new Coleman Brothers movie, portraying the character “Eleanor.”
Like her inaugural screenplay (which recently wrapped production), not much has been publicly announced about the new Coleman Brothers movie.
So far, we know that it’s a vampire movie and that it’s written and directed by Vince and James Coleman. We also know that Lulu’s character “Eleanor” gets turned and becomes a bloodsucker. Not much else is known about the movie as of right now.

There is something about a carnival. Something mysterious. Maybe even a tad dangerous. In the midst of a humdrum existence, a carnival feels like one of the last places left where magic may still exist. It’s here one day, gone the next. A world unto itself that sets up in new places, inviting us into its arms for one or two nights at a time, before vanishing, taking its magic along with it. It is populated by people living their lives on the edge of society; just close enough for us to see and interact with when they choose, before closing the curtain and retreating to their own little world. Performers who thrill, challenge, and play with their audience before disappearing like ghosts, leaving us behind in the ordinary world.
That mysterious nature has been bottled on film a handful of times. Tod Browning’s Freaks, the HBO Carnivale series,...

The Adams Family have done it again! The filmmaking team, made up of father John Adams, mother Toby Poser and daughters Zelda and Lulu, have been writing, directing, producing and starring in their own independent productions for a little over a decade, and have crafted festival favorites including The Deeper You Dig and Hellbender. Last week, at the Fantasia Film Festival, they premiered their most ambitious project yet, Where the Devil Roams, a supernatural horror set in Depression-era America.
Hard times have fallen upon a small carnival. Attendance is at an all-time low, and there's not enough nickels to go around to feed the sideshow acts. Among them are the performing trio, Maggie (Toby Poser), Seven (John Adams) and Eve (Zelda Adams), who do a song and dance routine that hardly draws a crowd. Stealing their spectators is Mr. Tibbs, a magician who slices off his fingers one by one with rusty scissors,...

Where The Devil Roams Photo: Fantasia International Film Festival
The Adams Family – John Adams, Toby Poser and their children Zelda Adams and Lulu Adama – have been making films together for some years now. Screening as part of the Fantasia International Film Festival and also part of the line-up for this month’s Frightfest, their latest work, Where The Devil Roams, is their best yet. It follows a family of carnival performers: the troubled, psychopathic Maggie (Toby), shell shocked former army medic Seven (John) and singing sensation Eve (Zelda), who is mute offstage, as they travel across the US during the Great Depression, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.
We spoke briefly about the film a couple of years ago, when they were promoting their last film, Hellbender, and when we meet again I say that I recall being told then that this one was Zelda’s idea.
Zelda nods.

Plot: Traces a family of murderous sideshow performers as it travels around the world on the dying carnival circuit.
Review: I feel it needs to be stated right off the bat that Where the Devil Roams will not be for everybody. From a production standpoint, it feels very amateur at points. The blown-out sky and awkward sound design certainly point to this being more student film than major feature. But even still, there’s a beauty to the cinematography, as well as the awkward performances. You’re either going to be turned off by it or along for the ride. I can’t imagine there being much “in-between” when it comes to such a polarizing style of film.
John Adams, Toby Poser, and Zelda Adams all serve as the writers, directors, and stars of Where the Devil Roams, and that fact alone should be commended. Not very often do you see a Trifecta in film,...

The Adams Family are among the most exciting indie horror filmmakers working today. The prolific family of hands-on filmmakers – father John Adams, mother Tobey Poser, and daughter Zelda Adams – share writing, directing and acting credits on all of their films, including 2021’s Hellbender.
Where the Devil Roams is the family’s most ambitious film yet, replete with a large supporting cast and a Depression-era period setting. The sprawling nature of the story gives the film an epic scope, but it also chips away at the cohesive structure, as the film winds up feeling more like a series of vignettes that fail to build to a satisfying, cohesive whole.
Maggie (Poser) is an uneducated woman married to Seven (John Adams), a former war medic. She’s impulsive and prone to violence, while he faints at the sight of blood. The pair have a regular gig as carnival performers with their daughter...

On Friday, Fangoria and Fangoria Studios released their 2023 Chainsaw Award nominations, which recognize outstanding achievements in horror film and television. Here's something to keep an eye out for, an American-Serbian coproduction called Hell Hole. Production began a few weeks ago, just before Christmas, on Rtanj Mountain in the Serbian Carpathians. It's southeast of Belgrada and appreciated for its pyramidal shape apparently. Geography and montology lesson over let's move on to the important stuff and it is hella important. Hell Hole is being made by members of the Adams Family. No, not the double 'D' family but the beloved Adams family who have made a name for themselves in independant horror with movies like Hellbender and The Deeper You Dig. That Adams family. The discovery by a fracking crew of a living French soldier from the campaigns of Napoleon in an isolated valley...

Since 2022 seems to have affected my enjoyment of all artistic mediums equally, I will refrain from declaring that it’s been a lackluster year for quantity when it comes to great work in film posters. I simply haven’t loved that much of anything this year—posters, film, music, etc.
While it stinks in terms of feeling good on the day-to-day by what I’m consuming, it’s made shoring up end-of-year lists pretty easy. Maybe not in terms of setting an order of things, but definitely in singling out which ones I need to organize.
I even considered making this list a Top 30 instead of a Top 25 since I only really had 31 posters on my final shortlist, but leaving six off is much less anxiety-inducing than one. In the end, all of those that made the cut are superb. Pretending this specific order isn’t arbitrary is just plain narcissism.

Three years ago, following the lack of recognition at the Oscars for horror films, Trace Thurman and I created “The Hereditaries” (named after Toni Collette’s Hereditary omission), a series of horror awards to acknowledge all of the great work being done in the genre.
We’re now up to the fourth annual Hereditaries (click here to vote), which celebrates the amazing diversity of horror films released in 2022. Ranging from blockbusters like Nope and Scream (2022), which lead the nominations with 10 apiece, to avant-garde indies like Hellbender and Something in the Dirt, to “under the radar” releases like Shudder’s Glorious and Korean thriller Midnight, we’re shining a light on all of the great horror content that came out this year.

Terence Krey's "Summoners" is an indie slice of "Practical Magic" pie, telling a heartfelt story about timeless friendship through spellcasting. It's a lighter horror tale that isn't beholden to stereotypical scares, showing the more compassionate side of genre filmmaking. Krey sticks closer to titles like "Hellbender" when executing what wicked curses this way come, without feeling like witchcraft fans are left in the cold. "Summoners" focuses on storytelling and character arcs above all, which accentuates what impractical magic might take place as characters learn there's no cure for life's most unpredictable swings.
Co-writer Christine Nyland stars as Jess Whitman, a Massachusetts resident who returns home after her mother's death. Jess seems apprehensive when father Doug (Larry Fessenden) suggests visiting his wife's grave, always avoiding the conversation. Instead, Jess reconnects with former bestie Alana Wheeler (McLean Peterson) as they relive their local glory days — which eventually brings up their "casting" abilities.

Stop stressing over what to watch this Halloween and instead turn to this varied mix of horror titles, both old and new, from Shudder’s library
Every streaming service turns Halloween into an opportunity to showcase what horror genre heavy hitters they have in their library. But there’s extra pressure for a service like Shudder (also available on AMC+), which specifically zeroes in on horror programming, to go all-out when it comes to the Halloween season.
Shudder has more than 600 horror films in its growing library with dozens more having been added to the mix this October as part of their intensive “Home for Halloween” celebration. As such, it can sometimes be even more difficult to figure out the perfect viewing schedule when there are so many options at one’s disposal.

Fresh, raw and bewitching indie folk horror Hellbender will grip fans with a story that has real bite, promising one hell of a ride. As unnerving and gruesome as it is beautiful and enticing, this captivating, unsettling and hellish feature will push audiences to the brink. Written and directed by genre trailblazers, the Adams Family, the film is certified fresh with a 97 score on Rotten Tomatoes. The sixth feature from the family collective who write, direct, produce, score, edit and act in all of their films, Hellbender had its world premiere at Fantasia International Film Festival 2021, where it garnered two wins and a nomination for Best Actress, Best Motion Picture Score and Best Film, respectively.

Economic and production restraints on filmmakers have been hell for a while now. But it has made for some really interesting horror cinema. Hosts (2020) and We're All Going to the World's Fair (2021) are among my favorite recent films. They feature emerging talent getting really creative with what they have on hand. That's also the case with two recent films from the Addams Family, who have turned rural upstate New York into a playground for their entire family to create the imaginative horrors of The Deeper You Dig (2019) and last year's festival smash, Hellbender (2021). But I recently saw a film that combined the found footage aesthetic of the former group with the DIY cinema family effort of the second and it kind...

John Adams, Zelda Adams, and Toby Poser are three of the four members of the Adams Family. Over ten years ago, the team behind Wonder Wheel Productions made their debut with "Rumblestrips." A decade later, the Adams Family has found a fanbase in the horror community, thanks to movies such as "The Deeper You Dig" and their latest, "Hellbender." Shot in Upstate New York, the trio all do their part in acting, writing, directing, editing, and composing the coming-of-age surrealist witch film.

Teenager Izzy (Zelda Adams) lives a lonely life with her mother (Toby Poser), their house isolated deep in the Catskill Mountains. That scenic seclusion is no accident. Her mother has gone through enormous efforts to keep Izzy largely away from people since she was five. For her own protection, and perhaps for that of others. They spend their days being each others’ best friends, teaching one another and making music in their two-piece rock band, H6llb6nd6r. As Izzy begins to grow more into herself, she starts venturing into town, spending time with other people, and a sharp thirst for deeper knowledge is stirred. Knowledge of self, and also of her family’s mysterious history… with witchcraft.

As an accused witch is lifted into the air by rope in the hands of three women, we anticipate the worst. There’s no choice when we already know what the latest DIY-horror from the Adams Family is about. So if hanging as a test for witchcraft means the victim remains alive, what comes next? Does she rise even higher before decimating those who dared to think they could destroy her? Does the fact that everyone watching being women mean they too are witches readying to finish the job? Even when it all eventually ends in a ball of flame and burning flesh, the punk-rock segue ushering in the present leaves the consequences uncertain.
