Eight years after his last feature, Director Gareth Evans has returned to his favorite crime action genre with Netflix’s Havoc, a no-nonsense kill-or-be-killed venture that fires on all cylinders to deliver a memorable, bone-crushing, blood-splattering action spectacle. Aside from that, what makes Havoc really special amidst the director’s filmography is that there is a distinct pulp-noir style quotient evoked by the visuals, with all the elements of grunge, smoke, and darkness capturing the essence of corruption, a kind of world-building usually seen when characters like Batman or the Shadow are involved. The characterization, much like the plot details, is very simplistic—in most cases not that much developed, but it is enough to provide justification to the maddening violence and bloodshed, which makes viewers forget about any possible drawbacks anyway. There is some solid star power in the ensemble cast of Havoc, a discussion of which can’t...

Like every season of the hit HBO Mike White series "The White Lotus," the Thailand-set third season featured some terrific character actors giving scene-stealing turns as some of the show's most over-the-top characters yet. One of season 3's biggest standouts was Walton Goggins as Rick Hatchett, a visitor to The White Lotus on a quest for vengeance, and the fact that he was a standout should come as no real surprise to fans of the charismatic actor. Over his career thus far, Goggins has made a name for himself by completely disappearing into his roles and giving them his all, no matter how big or small the part. One has to look no further than his guest spot on the NBC sitcom "Community" to understand his incredible talent for committing to the bit. Heck, he even pushed past his own severe phobia of snakes to shoot a terrifying scene in "The White Lotus,...

Jenn Lyon (Claws) has been cast as the lead of Stumble, Jeff Astrof and Liz Astrof’s single-camera cheerleading comedy pilot for NBC.
Underlining just how tight the job market is post-peak TV with well-paying series regular role opportunities few and far between, there were six well known actresses who tested for the part, I hear. Most of them have led series, movies or Broadway productions, with major award winners in the midst.
Written by the Astrof siblings in their first collaboration, Stumble is a mockumentary about the ridiculously high stakes competitive world of junior college cheer.

Despite standing less than five-feet tall, Danny DeVito is a giant of the entertainment industry. With literally dozens of credits to his name, DeVito has towered over the film and TV worlds through sheer force of his talent for more than half a century, with no signs of slowing down. While he has made his name and earned his fame as an actor, he's also an accomplished director and a prolific producer. Heck, he has credits for screenwriting, editing, and even soundtracks! DeVito's a cinematic "Renaissance Man," and not just because he starred in a 1994 comedy with that name.
Despite DeVito's gargantuan cinematic contributions, this multi-talented, multi-hyphenated filmmaker has never won an Academy Award, and has only been nominated once, for producing "Erin Brockovich." Yet even while watching his buddies Jack Nicholson and Michael Douglas roll in gold, DeVito stays in good spirits, because that's the guy he is. Well,...

One of the most successful creative minds working in television today is writer and producer Taylor Sheridan, whose shows consistently have won critics and audiences alike. In 2024, Sheridan teamed up with Christian Wallace to create the hit show "Landman," inspired by Wallace's podcast series "Boomtown." Billy Bob Thornton leads an all-star cast as Tommy Norris, a petroleum landman, someone who scouts and brokers deals for natural resource rights on behalf of an oil company. Set primarily in West Texas, Norris' life comes under scrutiny after being forced to deal with a local cartel.
Fortunately, while fans wait for new episodes of "Landman," there are plenty of thematically similar shows to check out next. Several on this list are also created and produced by Sheridan, while they all feature mature characters dealing with life-and-death issues, often with a criminal element involved. And just as "Landman" has the feel of a neo-Western,...

After waiting patiently for four years, Tom Hardy is all set to wreak Havoc on Netflix this Friday. While we await the arrival of the highly anticipated action thriller, which sees Hardy join forces with The Raid director Gareth Evans, the first reactions to Havoc have now emerged. And, mercifully, it sounds like the wait will have been well worth it.
We begin with critic Zachary Lee, who heaps praise on the combined efforts of Hardy and Evans, declaring Havoc “muscular filmmaking at its finest” and highlighting one action scene in particular.
#Havoc: Gareth Evans & Tom Hardy show that we’ve only nicked the surface when it comes to depicting on-screen death. Muscular filmmaking at its finest, it’s relentlessly bleak but there’s a twisted catharsis in seeing how it crescendos in brutality. Best night club fight in ages.
The praise continues courtesy of The Globe and Mail's Barry Hertz,...

Back when flip phones ruled and crime shows were everywhere, Monk stood out like a sore thumb, one that had to be washed 27 times. Adrian Monk wasn’t your typical detective. He was a genius with germ issues, a human magnifying glass with 312 phobias, and the reason millions of us developed an odd respect for hand wipes. Tony Shalhoub made Monk iconic, but the rest of the gang, Natalie, Stottlemeyer, Randy, and even Sharona, brought their own brand of chaos, charm, and comedy.
For eight glorious seasons, they solved murders, wrestled personal baggage, and somehow made Ocd oddly heartwarming. After the show wrapped in 2009, fans waited years for a comeback. Then boom, 2023’s Mr. Monk’s Last Case dropped like a nostalgic mic, reuniting the core crew. It reminded us just how much we missed this quirky crime-solving family. In the ‘90s New York acting scene, Steve Zahn and Rick Gomez were two moons orbiting the same planet. They went out for the same roles and ran in the same crowds. Gomez landed a coveted spot in the World War II miniseries Band of Brothers, while Zahn bowed out due to scheduling issues that prevented him from reuniting with his That Thing You Do director Tom Hanks. Despite these close encounters, they don’t recall ever meeting.
Nearly 20 years later, Zahn and Gomez finally linked up on The Crossing, in which Zahn played a sheriff to Gomez’s deputy. The sci-fi show was short-lived, airing for just one season on ABC in 2018, but it spawned one of the closest relationships in both men’s lives. “We both worked the same way. Kaitlyn Dever is now making waves as Abby in HBO’s The Last of Us Season 2, and as one of the most controversial characters in the game and the show, it’s only proper that we get to the bottom of what makes her story so impactful for the audience.

[This story contains spoilers from the season two premiere of The Last of Us, “Future Days.”]
Over the course of its first season, The Last of Us put forth a variety of villains, from people-eating preachers to people-eating fungi. But with its second-season premiere, the show has introduced its fiercest foe yet, even if it doesn’t look like it yet.
The season two premiere, “Future Days,” begins with a group of characters we have never met before, led by a person with an intimate connection to main protagonists Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey): Abby, played by Kaitlyn Dever. Abby is one of just a few surviving members of the Firefly resistance group Joel wiped out at the end of season one, all in an effort to stop them from performing an operation on Ellie that would have ended her life, while potentially ending the cordyceps infection that started everything. Needless to say, while we at home love Joel and Ellie,...

If there's one element to the "The Last of Us" universe more divisive than Joel's (Pedro Pascal) decision to protect Ellie (Bella Ramsey), it's the new character who shows up in the second game. Making her debut in season 2 of HBO's live-action adaptation of the beloved video game franchise is controversial character Abby, an outsider that fans got to know (whether they liked it or not) in "The Last of Us Part II." Wandering in from the snow and heating things up to unimaginable levels, this outsider from an opposing faction to Joel and Ellie's plays a massive part in the story that's set to unfold in the new season.
To take on such a gig is a big ask, particularly given the reaction the character initially received from fans following the release of "The Last of Us Part II." Thankfully, this part is being played by Kaitlyn Dever. She's...

Amazon Prime Video is actively being dominated by one Mr. Kevin Bacon. The actor, best known for his roles in classics such as "Footloose" and "Tremors" (among many others), stars in the newly-unveiled Blumhouse horror-comedy series "The Bondsman." Though the show hasn't been out very long, it's pretty safe to declare it a big hit in the early going.
The series debuted all eight episodes of its first season on Prime Video at once on Thursday, April 3. Though certain shows get the weekly release treatment on the streamer, such as "The Boys," Amazon decided to go with a Netflix-style binge dump for this one. It paid off, as the series is currently the most-watched on all of Prime Video, per FlixPatrol. At the moment, it even ranks above the likes of "The Wheel of Time" and "Reacher", which just debuted its season 3 finale. That makes this a big winner for Blumhouse and Amazon,...

2011 was a huge year for Kaitlyn Dever. Though she was only 14 at the time, the up-and-coming actor booked small parts in two high profile movies ("Bad Teacher" and Clint Eastwood's "J. Edgar"), popped as tough Kentucky cookie Loretta McCready in the magnificent second season of "Justified," and joined the main cast of Tim Allen's new sitcom "Last Man Standing." That's quite a range of shows and films, and this ensured Dever would get to flaunt her burgeoning talent all the way across the demographic spectrum.
For families with young viewers, "Last Man Standing" was the kind of relentlessly inoffensive sitcom they could watch together without worrying there'd be a ribald gag or profanity. Say what you will about Allen (and I'm quite certain the cocaine dealers he snitched on in 1978 to avoid serving a length prison sentence have said plenty about him), he knows what his audience expects from him,...

“The White Lotus” Season 3 is finally here. As is always the case with the HBO anthology series, though, it’s returned with a new cast of actors and characters for viewers to follow and either grow to love or revile. “The White Lotus” has also left its Hawaii and Italy hotels behind in favor of a new exotic setting: a wellness retreat in Thailand. Prepare for a lot of awkward social moments, barely hidden resentment, and, of course, some murder.
Here are all the characters you need to know in “The White Lotus” Season 3 as well as who play them.

One of the year’s boldest and most unique new shows, “The Bondsman,” has finally arrived. The genre-bending offering from Amazon’s Prime Video is a supernatural horror-action series with a fittingly surreal tone, darkly comedic edge and a whiskey-soaked helping of good old-fashioned country twang. Constantine meets The Evil Dead might be the best way to describe The Bondsman, the new Blumhouse Television series starring Kevin Bacon as a bounty hunter who comes back from the dead to mend his fractured family, rediscover his love of country music, and use his skills to track down demons who have escaped from Hell (all while trying not to get sent back to Hell himself).
A series that is comical, action-packed, heart-wrenching, and one hell of a good time, all eight episodes of The Bondsman will be released on Prime Video beginning April 3rd, and Daily Dead had the pleasure of talking with writer/showrunner Erik Oleson and co-stars Beth Grant, Jolene Purdy, and Maxwell Jenkins about working with Kevin Bacon, exploring the dynamics of a dysfunctional yet loving family, and performing the show's impressive (and emotional) country music songs.

Review: There have been a lot of series over the years that have tried to combine horror and comedy. When you throw in the idea of a protagonist being enlisted to hunt down demons and send them back to Hell, you can count the 1998 Fox series Brimstone and the 2007 CW show Reaper amongst similar concepts. Even Ash vs. Evil Dead had a good balance of the genres, though it did lean more towards comedy, unlike the grim Brimstone. Striking the right amount of levity and chills can...

Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson stars alongside social media personalities Bryce Hall and Hannah Stocking in Skillhouse, with Josh Stolberg (Spiral: From the Book of Saw) directing.
Deadline reports that Skillhouse, “a dark satire of social media and influencer culture, exploring how far people will go for online fame,” hits theaters July 11 from Fathom Entertainment.
In the film, “Ten influencers are lured into a sinister content house and forced to compete in lethal social media challenges – because in Skillhouse, clout isn’t just currency; it’s survival.”
Neal McDonough, McCarrie McCausland (“Army Wives,” “The Originals,” “Game of Silence”), and Paige VanZant also star.

Ridley Scott's iconic Alien film has spawned a franchise of Xenomorph-fronted films and a bevy of loyal fans. And now the house that Ripley built is headed to the small screen under the tutelage of Fargo and Legion creator, Noah Hawley, with Alien: Earth. In a new clip that was first shared with shareholders during a spectacle-laden call for shareholders with Disney CEO, Bob Iger, the tension and stakes of the original films feels alive and well — though that may be the only thing alive by the time the titular alien arrives on our planet.
The series, which also recently had a new trailer revealed at SXSW, is said to follow a young woman (played by Sydney Chandler) and a "ragtag group of tactical soldiers" who make "a fateful discovery" after "a mysterious space vessel crash-lands on Earth ... that puts them face-to-face with the planet's greatest threat." Part of what makes HBO's "The White Lotus" such an appealing anthology series (although the "anthology" label is debatable at this point) is the fact that with each season, viewers get a chance to experience the externally luxurious yet emotionally laborious vacations of a different group of characters portrayed by an inspired collection of actors. In particular, character actors tend to steal the show with their dynamic roles, often showcasing a range of emotions that can leave someone laughing themselves silly in one scene or feeling intense intimidation by them in the next. With season 3 more than halfway completed, one of the absolute standouts enduring their stay at the White Lotus wellness resort in Thailand is the mysterious Rick Hatchett, played by Walton Goggins.
Goggins' performance thus far in "The White Lotus" season 3 is yet another showcase of his broad range as a character actor. Upon his introduction in the first episode,...

This year, Kaitlyn Dever is starring on two TV shows, playing a key supporting role on a popular drama series and portraying a fraudster on a Netflix limited series. If you're feeling déjà vu, there's good reason. In 2022, Julia Garner was in the same boat, and if history repeats, Dever could also mimic Garner's Emmy trajectory.
Garner scored double Emmy nominations for Best Drama Supporting Actress for Ozark and Best Limited/TV Movie Actress for Inventing Anna. The former was no surprise since she had already won twice for her fan-favorite portrayal of Ruth Langmore, and this was for Ozark's fourth and final season, in which Garner had a meaty episode. The latter bid was also expected by nomination morning — she was in fourth place in the Gold Derby odds — as the actress drew praise for her committed turn as con artist Anna Sorokin/Anna Delvey, with the daffiest of accents,...
