Anime is bigger than ever. With dedicated streaming services such as Crunchyroll enjoying a meteoric rise, rivals Netflix and Prime Video getting in on the action with their own dedicated selection, and even Disney – the arbiter of western animation – now boasting a growing number of exclusive anime series on Disney+, the availability and popularity of Japanese animation has never been greater.
Yet it's in film where anime has enjoyed the biggest boom, with the likes of Your Name and Miss Hokusai heralding a new era of excellence in animation, adding to a canon of definitive works such as Akira and My Neighbour Totoro. But with decades of brilliance to choose from, getting started on anime – or just choosing what to watch for movie night – can be daunting.

Exclusive: Film and TV helmer Victoria Mahoney has been tapped to direct Suits: L.A., NBC’s proposed Suits offshoot, which has been heating up for a pilot order.
As Deadline reported exclusively in October, the project, from Suits creator Aaron Korsh, is not a revival or reboot of the popular USA Network series and, unlike the 2019 Pearson, the new legal procedural is not a spinoff either — it would be a Suits universe series in the vein of the CSI and NCIS franchises featuring new characters in a new location, Los Angeles.
Like Suits, which was set in New York and filmed in Toronto, Suits: L.A. also will film in Canada, with Vancouver standing in for Los Angeles. Production is slated to begin in March, I hear.
Korsh executive produces alongside David Bartis, Doug Liman and Gene Klein, who were EPs with him on the original series.

Car racing has always found its appeal among cinema goers, and particularly in fans of animation, with the success of titles like “Cars”, “Turbo” “Redline” etc proving the fact in the most eloquent fashion. Apparently, it turns out that animation can capture the speed needed for the genre, as much as the sci-fi elements usually incorporated in these kinds of films. “Rally Road Racers” is definitely among those titles.

Intro: One of the biggest action franchises of the last twenty-five years had humble beginnings. It started with a simple little movie about street racing, based on a magazine article, with a cast of young people who weren’t very well-known and action scenes that are relatively grounded. That movie has somehow spawned multiple sequels and a spin-off. Along the way, those further installments have gotten bigger, crazier, and more over-the-top, while earning over six billion dollars at the worldwide box office. The movie we’re talking about is the 2001 release The Fast and the Furious (watch it Here) – and it’s time for it to be Revisited.

Bill Butler, the Oscar-nominated cinematographer whose career in Hollywood spanned five decades, has passed away. The news comes to us via The Hollywood Reporter, with the American Society of Cinematographers confirming his death. Butler was 101 years old, and mere days away from 102. The celebrated filmmaker leaves behind a body of work that is sure to outlive us all.
Born in 1921, Butler got his start in the early '60s serving as the director of photography on TV movies such as "The People vs. Paul Crump" and "The Bold Men." But it wasn't long before he was making a name for himself, shooting Francis Ford Coppola's first feature "The Rain People" in 1969. Butler was also behind the camera working with Coppola again for one of cinema's all-time classics a handful of years later with 1974's "The Conversation."

Looking back over the "Fast & Furious" movies, it's astonishing how far they have evolved. In 2021's "F9," two characters literally launched a car into space. This was followed by a scene where the central team of stunt drivers equipped their cars with powerful electromagnets that could pull entire washing machines out of storefronts in order to fling them at enemy pursuers. Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his crew are more or less unkillable at this point, a detail that the characters were wise enough to acknowledge; Chris "Ludacris" Bridges points out that they may all actually be immortal.
Looking back to Rob Cohen's 2001 original film, "The Fast and the Furious," one finds a very, very modest beginning. "The Fast and the Furious" is essentially a mid-budget "Point Break" knockoff about ultra-cool fast-driving thieves who do nothing more sinister than boost DVD players from delivery trucks. Like in "Point Break,...

New Delhi, Sep 15 (Ians) Popular games like Roblox, FIFA, Pubg and Minecraft are among 28 games that were exploited by malware between July 2021 and June this year, affecting more than 384,000 users via nearly 92,000 malicious files.
Other big series of games released during the last year — Elden Ring, Halo, and Resident Evil — were also actively abused by attackers who spread ‘RedLine’ malware under their guise, according to Kaspersky researchers.
RedLine is a password-stealing software, which extracts sensitive data from the victim’s device such as passwords, saved bank card details, cryptocurrency wallets and credentials for Vpn services.
“Cybercriminals are creating more and more new schemes and tools to attack players and steal their credit card data and even game accounts, which can contain expensive skins that can later be sold. For example, strikes on e-sports, which are now gaining huge popularity around the world,” said Anton V. Ivanov, senior security researcher at Kaspersky.

Actress, producer and musician Trace Lysette, known for her recurring role as Shea on all five seasons of Amazon’s “Transparent,” and for her appearance alongside Jennifer Lopez and Constance Wu in “Hustlers,” takes her career to a new level with a heart-rending turn in the title role of Venice competition title “Monica.”
• What drew you to this project? What stuck out to me most are the universal themes. A lot of people can relate to a loved one nearing the end of this physical life. Also, just the fact that families in general go through a lot together. There are strains on relationships, drama, humor, sadness… all of these things. This movie just happens to place a trans woman at the center of it all and we get to see it through her eyes. Which unfortunately is very rare and maybe even unheard of in film.

It was always obvious to me that Katsuhito Ishii’s style would fit greatly in anime and the fact that the director of “Redline” is Takeshi Koike, who was in charge of the excellent style of animation featured in Ishii’s films “Funky Forest” and “The Taste of Tea”, was another guarantee of excellence. Add to all that the fact that Madhouse was the production studio behind the anime and that the cast of voice actors included Tadanobu Asano, Yu Aoi and Takuya Kimura, and you could easily say that nothing could go wrong with this one. Well, apart from the fact that the production took seven years to finish, particularly due to the over 100,000 hand-drawn frames, nothing did, in one of the best anime movies of the 21st century.

It's not often that I write two reviews for the same film almost within a month from each other, but for Takeshi Koike's "Redline" I will gladly make an exception. Now for those with a big wallet this film was actually available already from Japan with English subtitles, but the first truly English-friendly version (meaning: with an English dub as well) will be released by Manga UK within a week in several editions, with even the most pimped version costing only a fraction of the Japanese disc. If Speed Racer and Heavy Metal had a child, but the child was exposed to a lot of drugs in utero, was born during a Gwar concert, only ate magic mushrooms, suffered a nerdy, angst-ridden youth, then contracted malaria, and suffered a dream infected with delirium, that dream would be Redline. Watching Redline made me feel party to a war crime. I’m pretty sure that I left the theatre on some kind of government list. I loved every minute of it.
In a nutshell: taking place in a galaxy of bizarre creatures, cyborgs, and magic, racing is the most important thing. Racer Sweet Jp (Takuya Kimura), a long shot with mob connections, wins a spot in the galaxy’s biggest race,...

Below you can find a few of our picks for the fest. There are many great films playing at Toronto After Dark this year, but we think these ones are particularly noteworthy

Before we get started with our review for RedLine, meet Jp:
Jp sports a super Elvis hairdo, is clad from head-to-toe in leather and is, if you don’t mind me saying, a total friggin’ bad-asss! He’s motivated by only two things: winning and stealing the heart of fellow driver Sonoshee.
That’s Frisbee. Frisbee is a bit harder to describe. He’s been friends with Jp since they were only little kids dreaming of one day making it big as a racing team. He’s only motivated by one thing: money. Now in their prime, Frisbee and Jp make a formidable race-fixing duo.
“RedLine” is directed by Takeshi Koike. It follows the adventures of a bunch of insanely wacky race drivers competing in the most ridiculous of races. Armed to the teeth in super-souped up instruments of speed, everything goes when these guys take to the “streets”. Take...

What makes Takeshi Koike's Redline a work of sheer, unalloyed genius is that when you get down to it, it's simply a daft science fiction cartoon about racing cars very, very fast. Seriously, the simple premise is less a compromise of any kind than purity of vision. Koike, a longtime industry veteran is still probably best known in the West for Ninja Scroll, the hyper-stylised, ultra-violent paean to juvenile action fantasies that introduced many a child of the eighties to what anime was capable of, and in several ways Redline is an extension of that. It's an animator's film, not Vanishing Point: Koike doesn't really do depth or subtext per se.In some far distant future a group of dedicated mavericks still race souped-up, customised autos...

Stop the presses! After an excruciatingly long period of waiting, Redline finally found its way onto the TV sets of those who can read English subtitles. Takeshi Koike's long awaited project took almost seven years to complete, but he made sure every second of that long wait counted. The result is a staggering demonstration of the power of animation, wrapped in colorful pop art and injected with a mean streak of creative madness. And boy did I like it. In 2004 Japan was experiencing one of its top animation production years, with films like Ghost In The Shell 2, Howl's Moving Castle, Mind Game and Steamboy all being released that year. But Production I.G and director Imaishi had another surprise lined up. When Dead Leaves...

'Redline,' directed by Takeshi Koike (Japan)
'Redline' is fast, furious and out of control. Seriously, I do not ever think I've seen such loud anime, both aurally and visually -- this auto-racing movie makes 'Speed Racer' look like a Sunday drive, and is a long way from 'Cars.' The film was eagerly awaited at Fantastic Fest because it was written by Katsuhito Ishii, who wrote and directed Fantastic Fest 2006 selection 'Funky Forest,' and directed by Takeshi Koike, who animated 'Funky Forest.'
The "Redline" of the movie is one of the biggest auto races -- not in the world, but in the galaxy in this futuristic tale. In fact, it's being held on a planet whose inhabitants are actively opposed to its being there and intend to destroy all participants and maybe the spectators too. The prime competitors for the prize are Sonoshee,...

Like watching Speed Racer on speed. If you'd been hoping that the writer of Funky Forest would conjure up a feature-length anime that is every bit as insane as that cult classic, your dreams have come true.
Redline provides all the thrills, crashes, and automotive porn that the sub-genre of racing movies demands, while setting the action on a planet called RoboWorld that allows the free floating imagination of Katsuhito Ishii to take root and bloom a thousand freaky characters and situations. As few others do, Ishii understands that you don't need to let silly concepts like gravity and logic get in the way of entertainment.
It's kinda scary how routine the first racing sequence appears. Sure, it looks wild, a riot of action and color, but it plays out almost in normal fashion. Jp, a driver with an extreme duck-tail atop his head, looks to be a ferocious speed demon,...

After the announcement of Matt Reeves Let Me In for opening night, Fantastic Fest has unveiled another slew of exciting premieres and titles for its 2010 line-up.
The festival has added a Gala screening of Buried, a claustrophobic thriller starring Ryan Reynolds, on Thursday, September 23 (a day before its released in select theaters). Reynolds and director Rodrigo Cortés will be in attendance. Fantastic Fest is also adding it to their “Rolling Roadshow” list, which prides itself on an immersive experience for seeing the film (e.g. the classic On the Waterfront projected on a New Jersey pier). The twist — and there’s always a twist with these guys — is that four people will be selected to watch the film while actually buried. (More info here.)

As we end the Summer of 2010, we leave a series of box office bombs behind us, and look forward to an incredible film festival season this fall. With such film festivals as Toronto, New York, and Venice to look forward to, this year may still be saved for the cineastes of the world. One film festival in particular that may not be on your radar, but deserves to be placed alongside those others, is Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, taking place September 23-30.

This is for all you anime fans out there. If you're not one, then this probably isn't for you. I first found out about this upcoming anime film Redline, directed by Takeshi Koike, when Twitch featured a wacky teaser for this anime that had a chill jazz song for the music. I waited until this official trailer hit (via Twitch again) to introduce Redline to all of you because this trailer actually makes this anime look truly frickin' badass. Redline is a high-speed, hardcore futuristic racing anime that just looks insane. I've got a soft spot for great anime films and this looks like it'll be fantastic. If it sounds like you'll enjoy this, then check out the trailer! Watch the official Japanese trailer for Takeshi Koike's Redline: Although it's in Japanese, you can check out the official website for Redline if you want: Red-Line.jp Set in...

And the perplexing music choice award of the day goes to the new French teaser for director Takeshi Koike's Katsuhito Ishii scripted racing anime Redline. Seriously. This music could not possibly be more different from the tone of the actual movie. Weird. Anyway ...
It's been a long, long road for this one, the anime feature first announced back in March of 2006. We've been keeping an eye on it ever since - the presence of Taste of Tea and Funky Forest director Katsuhito Ishii as script writer guaranteed that - but, even for animation, it seems to have been an unusually long and arduous process. The premiere was announced for the 2009 Annecy Festival - widely considered the leading animation festival in the world - only to be cancelled at the last minute for reasons that were never publicly stated. The film would end up premiering in Locarno instead, but has...

It’s been a long time coming for Redline - the car racing anime written and produced by Taste of Tea director Katsuhito Ishii that marks the feature debut of Takeshi Koike, who audiences know from his work on The Animatrix and the anime sequences in Kill Bill. We first wrote about this one better than two years ago and with production finally wrapped the film was originally slated to premiere at Annecy earlier this year before it was pulled from the French animation festival to premiere in Locarno instead. Here’s the synopsis:
The most dangerous and exciting car race in the universe is held only once every five years. And that’s tonight. The competitors are lined up at the starting block. In his vehicle, Jp, the most daredevil driver on the circuit, is ready for the green light. Female driver Sonoshee, with whom he is secretly in love,...

Another great night on the Piazza: First William Friedkin received the "Leopard of Honor", held a speech about how he was influenced by European filmmakers of the 60s and the national-nervous-breakdown America was going through at the same time. After that he presented his 1985 classic "To Live And Die In L.A." – 80s hurray! It’s too bad that more than half of the audience left afterwards and missed the world premiere of Takeshi Koike’s "Redline", which might just be one of the craziest films ever to be screened in Locarno!
If you don’t like animation, over the top action and luscious colors, don’t go near his film. It is pure adrenaline from minute 1 to 100. Whenever I thought it couldn’t get any louder or faster, it proofed me wrong. This...

The website of the Locarno International Film Festival has been updated with a new clip from the crazy racing anime Redline from Studio Madhouse director Takeshi Koike (Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, Animatrix).
[See post to watch Flash video] There’s a German review available over at Outnow.ch that criticizes the lack of character development and story depth (as expected) but praises the incredible power and weirdness of the racing scenes, so I’m still excited to see Redline on home video soon.
