This girl has issues!
Watching this episode, especially after viewing the series as a whole a few times makes me wonder just what Bud saw in a girl like Georgia because she's so unlike any of the girls he's dated...and not in a good way.
She's extremely insecure, needy and so clingy to the point of being insufferable. In the very first scene with the two characters, we see Bud placing a necklace around Georgia's neck in an apparent gesture that their relationship has now reached a closer stage and they've been dating for a while now.
She's thrilled to have the gift as a sign that he's dating her and only her, but it's still not enough for Georgia. She seems to need a lot more from him in order to feel secure that he's with her.
There's no backstory given here, but Georgia is already displaying an unusual contempt for his mother Margaret as if she's in some sort of competition with her for Bud's affections. It's known to the viewer that she's never even met her before, so her contempt comes off as a little extreme and irrational.
When she finds out from Kathy that Margaret's birthday party is falling on the same day as the date Bud has made with her, she goes all out to make sure Bud absolutely PROMISES to show up to their date on Friday to ensure that he nixes his Mom's birthday party for her. It's at this point where I'm picturing boiled bunnies and shouting at the TV "Run Bud, RUN!" Can you imagine the kind of insufferable wife someone like this will make some poor guy later in life? Not to mention the giant rift she'd no doubt cause between him and her mother in law!
It's not clearly revealed in the episode, but it's apparent that her own mother has passed away because she lives alone with her father above the little grocery store they own.
Her father clearly loves her, but even with him she shows contempt as well and barks at him angrily when he's done nothing to warrant it. I gather the loss of her mother has greatly affected her and this is where her contempt for Bud's mother probably stems from and it's most likely unconscious so I guess I shouldn't be too hard on her.
Perhaps her mother dying has given her such a huge sense of abandonment to where she fears everyone else will do the same, but the way she clings so heavily to Bud is pretty extreme and even a little scary and disturbing.
For a light hearted sitcom, these are some very serious and dramatic undertones going on here which isn't bad, but boy is she an emotional handful! After seeing all the cute girls Bud has dated through the series, you wonder what he was doing with someone like this because she appears to be so unbalanced and unhappy.
The episode tries to end on a lighter note, but I didn't view it that way. When Georgia decides to stay for Margaret's party, I wondered if she was just plotting to become close so she can do away with her and become the only woman in Bud's life. The character really struck me as being that unstable.
But the awkward look on Bud face as the episode faded out told me he probably had no plans to see this nut job again and rightfully ran for the hills after that night.
I'm glad this character only appeared for this one episode and Bud eventually hooked up with Joyce who was a sweeter and much more emotionally balanced girl later in the series.
