- When another course of IVF fails, a couple turn to unconventional means to conceive.
- There's hell to pay when an infertile Liv is given a fertility totem so she can conceive a child. She believes her baby is the son of a demon, Ba'al, and slowly goes insane as supernatural phenomena surround her seemingly proving the existing of Ba'al.—Gislef
- Dr. Mounds tells Liv Whitley and her husband Matt that the results showing that Liv can't get pregnant, and they should consider adoption or surrogacy. Liv says that she wants to be pregnant, and wants to feel their baby growing inside of her. Matt says that they'll keep trying, and Mound warns that the chances of success decrease with each attempt while the cost increases, and they should be prepared. Asa the couple leaves, Matt tells Liv that they'll keep trying. One he goes, the receptionist Bernadette tells Liv that Matt is a keeper. Bernadette says that she's watch Liv visiting for two years, and shows Liv a Sumerian fertility totem. She tells Liv to place it under her bed during intimacy, and Liv will get a baby. Bernadette says that it's been in her family for a long time, and it's the reason she's there. She assures Liv that she can keep it as long as she likes, and Liv takes it.
That night at home, Liv places the totem beneath her bed. Matt comes to bed and talks about how he gets a better part, and Liv says that she just inherited her money instead of earning it. He says that he's serious about how they'll keep trying, and she stuck with his acting career and he'll stick with her about the baby. They kiss and make love, while it storms outside.
16 Months Later
Liv and her nanny Norma are tending to Liv's baby. The baby is crying despite Liv's efforts to calm him, Matt hasn't gotten back from his current acting job yet, and Norma nanny manages to quiet the baby. Liv complains that she doesn't know how to "operate" her own baby, and says that it's like he doesn't even want to be around her. She snaps, saying that becoming a mother was a mistake.
That night, Liv sees static on the baby monitor, and thinks she hears someone in the house. There's no one there, and she looks under the bed and finds the overturned totem. She takes it out and angrily "thanks" it for everything. and puts it in a box in the closet. Liv coms out and is startled by Matt in a corpse mask. He says that they told him to keep it on, and he has to be back at the set in two hours. Matt tells Liv that Norma called him and wanted him to check on Liv. Liv complains that Matt keeps working at night and isn't concerned about her, He takes off the mask and tells his wife that he doesn't want to live off her money, and Liv feels like she's losing it because she sucks at being a mom. Matt assures her that she doesn't, and that she has the hard job. He tells her that what she's experiencing is completely normal, and says that she should talk to a MD in postpartum disorders.
That night in bed, Liv hears the baby crying over the monitor. She sees a demon on the monitor, standing over the baby's crib, and goes to the nursery. The closet door is open and Liv hears growling from inside. When she looks in, there's nothing there. The monitor tablet in her hand shows the demon standing behind her, but when she turns there's nothing there.
Later, Liv meets with the MD, Eleanor Berger, and tells her what happened. Berger dismisses it as imagination, and Liv says that it's nice talking to someone who has been through the same thing. She wonders if it's possible for a baby to hate its mother, and she can't calm it down but everyone else can. Berger suggests the baby is picking up on Liv's stress, but says that a baby can't hate its mother. However, the MD says that it's not crazy to get that feeling. She suggests that Liv hire a night nurse for a few weeks until Liv's hormones level off, but Liv refuses. Berger agrees but says they can start off with some "new agey" techniques.
Later at home, Liv is giving her baby son, Aaron, a detox bath and talking to him and laughing. She then puts Aaron in his crib and goes out. Matt comes home to find Liv in the kitchen, and she points out on the monitor that Aaron isn't crying anymore and the baths Berger recommended are working. Liv has already made him coffee for his audition, and she thanks him for finding Berger for her. Aaron starts crying, and Liv tells Matt that she's got it, and he should go. Once Matt goes, Liv goes into the nursery and calms down Aaron, and finds the totem in a corner of his crib. It's taken on a more detailed demonic form, and she confirms that it's not where she put it. She asks Norma if she put it in Aaron's crib, and Norma crosses herself and says that she can't work there.
Liv hears growling coming from the basement, and goes downstairs. She finds scratch marks on the wall, and a torn apart duct nearby. A board falls down, scratching her arm with a protruding nail. Liv shows Matt the totem when he comes home, and he says that it looks Satanic. He asks where Liv got it, and she claims she got it at a new age store. Matt figures that a raccoon got caught in the basement, but Liv doesn't believe it and her husband wonders if she's talking about a ghost. He suggests that Liv is very tired and she's imagining things. Liv tells him that he doesn't have to worry about her, and he says that the show wants him back for an actual part. However, they're shooting nights and he can't do it if she's freaking out. Matt wants a reason from her not to worry, and Liv assures him that she's okay.
That night, Liv is in her bed using her laptop to an Internet search on Sumerian totems. She finds photos of the one like she had, and about how they're connected to the demon Ba'al, the Lord of the Flies. She sees Ba'al on the monitor and goes to the nursery, but all that's there is Aaron crying in his crib. She caresses him briefly and then goes out. Listening at the monitor, Liv hears a male voice and records it.
The next morning, Liv plays the recording for Matt. She speeds it up and they hear a voice saying "I want him". Screaming, she tries to make it clearer. Matt brings Berger over and she listens to the recording. She dismisses it as Liv's mind making connection, and says that she doesn't hear anything. Berger insists that Liv isn't thinking clearly because of lack of sleep, and Liv should accept that so she can move forward. The MD proscribes Zoloft, and later Liv takes some.
Matt has his fellow actors and friends from their college film department over for dinner, and they toast his success. One of his friends sees a nearby Ouija board and suggests they try it, and the others agree. Matt is leery, but Liv is with them and says that it's okay. They set up the board and puts their fingers on the planchette. It moves on its own, spelling out "JACK MEHOFF". One of them snickers at his joke, and the planchette moves again,, spelling out "HEISMINE". Liv backs away in terror, saying that "he" means Aaron, and throws the board across the room. She says that there's something in the house, and it wants their son. Matt say that it's crazy, but she says that they need to do something about the demon and runs out of the room. She goes to the nursery with Matt following her, complaining that she embarrassed her in front of his friends. Matt says he can't deal with her depression anymore, and tells her to do what she has to do but figure her shit out. Liv curses him and goes to the nursery, comforting Aaron who is crying, apparently because of the storm outside. She sees Ba'al outside the window, and tells him that he'll never get her baby.
Later, Bernadette goes to her car in the fertility clinic's parking garage. Liv approaches her with the totem and says that now Ba'al wants the baby back, She wants Bernadette to tell her how to get rid of Ba'al. Bernadette takes Liv to her apartment and says that Ba'al is a fertility god, not a demon, and one of her collected grimoires has a banishment spell. She says that her parents dabbled in the sacred arts, and she's been into paganism since it turned her life around from drug use. Bernadette insists that she only gave Liv the totem to help, and finds the banishment spell. She gives Liv a ritual dagger she bought and tells Liv to follow the ritual.
That night at her home, Liv performs the ritual, dribbling her blood on the totem while chanting. When Matt comes up behind her, a startled Liv stabs the dagger into his chest.
Two Weeks Later
Liv is in a sanitarium, and Matt comes to see her. They hug and apologizes for stabbing him, and he tells her that she didn't mean to do it and it's in the past. Matt says that Aaron is good, and tells Liv that she doesn't have to stay there. Liv says that she's not coming home until Berger says that it's safe, and won't leave until she gets a handle on everything. Matt tells her that he's there for her, and he loves her.
Matt goes to his car where Bernadette is waiting inside, and they kiss. He tells her that once his lawyers get done with, he'll have Liv committed for good. Bernadette is glad to get rid of the fake occult books. Later, Matt and Bernadette have a party with all their friends, who were in on it and set up the whole Ouija board scene. Matt's friends set up all the sound effects and scratches, one of them wore a Ba'al costume, and substituted her Zoloft for psychoactives. Matt says that when all of Liv's money is his, he'll pay them off. Aaron starts crying, and Matt says that he deliberately made himself infertile bur still impregnated Liv.
Matt goes to check on Aaron, while the lights flicker in the room where the others are. The friends hear growling, and fog pours into the room. Ba'al appears and kills all of them. Matt hears them screaming, goes to the room, and finds their corpses and Ba'al killing Bernadette.
Later, Matt is locked up as a murderer. Liv comes to see him and says that he's a bastard. Matt told the police everything, and he didn't want kids but Liv didn't listen. He wanted her money, and he insists that he didn't kill his friends for the money even though the police think he did. Matt insists that it was Ba'al, and Liv tells him that she's not going to listen to it from him He begs Liv for his help, and needs money for an attorney. Liv refuses to help him, says that Aaron doesn't have a father, and walks out.
Back at home, Liv holds Aaron and says that it's the two of them against the world. Ba'al appears and tells Liv to release him now that he's killed the others. Liv says that Bernadette gave her a real banishing spell even though Bernadette didn't believe it, and Liv cast it in the hospital. She summoned Ba'al and sent him to kill Matt' friend and frame Matt.
Liv agrees to release Ba'al as long as he gives her another son.
