- TriviaMayday didn't become a bank holiday in England until 1978 so it is quite possible Cedric Charlton would be working on that day.
- GoofsIt looks like a ham leg with cloves going into the oven. What comes out looks like a roasted bird.
- Quotes
[Montgomery has just reversed Pop's truck into Alec Norman's car]
Pop Larkin: Apologies. We'll pay for the damage. So how much do we owe you to get it fixed?
Alec Norman: At a conservative estimate, £250.
Vicar: I'm in the wrong sodding business.
[Pa pulls out his bulging wallet and hands a wad of notes to Alec]
Pop Larkin: Here. With the leftover cash, get yourself a spare car.
[Alec hands back a few notes]
Alec Norman: Why don't I give you back some of this to buy some contraception?
Classic error in trying to put a 21st century spin on a period drama. Some things were not like that. As other reviewers have pointed out ad nauseum, Kent had a practically zero immigrant population in the 50s. So, six BAME characters in a rural village at that time? I don't think so. And, if you need reminding of attitudes at the time, watch Flame In The Streets from 1960. It definitely wasn't all sweetness and light in a mellow glow, so why pretend it was? "Based on...." seems to have given the writers unlimited licence to include a woke narrative. Although I was surprised at the inclusion of the fox-hunting reference. I'm starting to tick off boxes. Next one will probably be the obligatory LGTB character. So far as casting is concerned, Ma Larkin comes across as the most believable character. Pop? Well, are we ever going to able to turn on our TV sets and NOT see Bradley Walsh?! The only thing he doesn't do is read the news! Give someone else a chance Brad! Apart from which there is not one utterance of "Perfick!" Just for information, "carny lad" is an Americanism. Gaff lad is the British term (I had an uncle who worked on the fairs). "Chundering" is the Australian slang for vomiting and was introduced in the Barry Mackenzie comic strip and films in the 1970s. "Crap!" was not a term in everday use in the 1950s. Also, this episode is set in 1958. The potential house buyer is driving a Triumph Herald which was not introduced until 1959. Can't see this version faring too well.
