The fun origins of Samba in Brazilian popular culture
Rodrigo_Amaro15 February 2023
A highly amusing and fun story about the origins of Samba in the early years of the 20th century with the unusual encounter of different characters who later came to realization of witnessing an important moment in musical history. We have historian Gilberto Freyre (Leonardo Medeiros), Modernist writer Mário de Andrade (Pascoal da Conceição) and his famous literary creature (also played by Pascoal) attending a Candomblé event where the two men go to see the festivities and the appearence of the spirit Exu - which is the main reason for Macunaíma to attend the party since he wants revenge on an enemy. Before the event, there are a group of musicians talking the instruments of one of their members (a tambourine, given by an important politician), and later on comes the creation of samba in a very unusual manner after the appearance of Exu in between drinks, loud music and plenty of laughter.

This is a fascinating imagination of events which includes real characters who were favorable about samba and were favorable as being a popular music in Brazil, that at the time was considered illegal since this came from the black community just as the religion candomblé, with most of its members being descendant from slaves. The music wasn't seen with good eyes by a majoity of the society and police authorities usually crash down samba gatherings, so it was all done in secrecy. As stated in the movie, the song that originated the rhythm to a wide popular acceptance was the one that concludes the movie. It's all always when a director or a writer imagine real elements and make such use in a fictional, well-humored manner, and for everything that is shown there's a whole sense of reality that makes things very believable. Everything shown could have happened except for the inclusion of a character that came out of a book - a wild native greatly played by Pascoal da Conceição.

A very enthusiastic thumbs up to this short, a great suggestion to viewers out there. 9/10.
