Based on the short film Dara, Mo Brother’s (actual names Kimo Stamboel and Timo Tjahjanto) debut feature is a genuine slasher film, so filled with gore and violence that became the first Indonesian film to be banned in Malaysia.
A group of people consisting of Adje and Astrid, a married couple expecting a baby, Alam, Eko, Jimmy, and Adje’s sister are heading to the airport in Jakarta. While on the road, they come across a very beautiful woman named Maya, who has been robbed and asks them to take her home. Eko is smitten with her and he persuades the others to comply. Eventually, they reach her house in the middle of nowhere, and she invites them in, to be properly thanked by her mother.

Details? We aint got no details. But what we do have is that image above, freshly posted to Instagram and Facebook by Timo Tjahjanto, one half of Indonesian directing duo The Mo Brothers. And for those unfamiliar with the face, that'd be the lead villain in the pair's ultra bloody horror film Macabre - released in Indonesia as Rumah Dara. Though little seen outside of Indonesia - and cut for bloody content to pass censorship within Indonesia - the original Macabre is one hella good time and this is very, very good news. Check out the trailer for the original below....

Popular in the 1960s and early 1970s with more rare appearances in the 1980s, 1990s and the 2000s, the anthology-style horror film has made a solid resurgence in recent years with such portmanteau releases as The ABCs of Death films and the V/H/S series.
With Mexico Barbaro, Fear Paris and other projects in various stages of completion, the anthology horror film looks to continue to be an important part of the horror cinema landscape.
Some anthology films employ a framing or wraparound sequence in an attempt to connect the segments that make up the film while others dispense with this classic Amicus-style approach entirely and simply present a collection of short films connected by genre.
Either way, a horror anthology film is ultimately about the quality of its individual segments and this article will take you on a tour of the greatest horror anthology segments of all time.

A number of Sound On Sight editors and contributors are geographically fortunate enough to make the Fantasia Film Festival an annual must-attend event. I have never been to the festival, but have followed it from afar since it landed on my radar years ago when a well-received short film I had a major acting role in called My Sweet Satan, played there.
This year’s lineup of films strikes me as substantially more intriguing than the programs of the last couple of years. Given Fantasia’s staggering breadth of programming spread across multiple weeks, the challenge is in trying to narrow a ‘most anticipated’ list down to just five films. My picks, in alphabetical order, are as follows.

The anthology horror film is back in the wake of the success of chapter-style horror films like The Theatre Bizarre (2011) and its announced follow-up, V/H/S (2012), the soon-to-be-released sequel V/H/S 2 (2013) and The ABC’s of Death (2012).
While this movement generates a good deal of conversation about the fondly remembered Amicus productions of the 1960’s and 1970’s like Dr. Terror’s House Of Horrors (Freddie Francis, 1965), Torture Garden (Freddie Francis, 1967), The House That Dripped Blood (Peter Duffell, 1971) and Asylum (Roy Ward Baker, 1972) among others, the comparison is not exactly accurate across the board.
While the segments of V/H/S are unified by shared visual style and a wraparound story, The Theatre Bizarre and The ABC’s of Death come off as collections of essentially unrelated horror short films loosely bound by a flimsy wraparound segment in the case of The Theatre Bizarre or a basic concept as...

Two years ago we were treated to the lunacy of an off-the-wall little Asian splatterfest called Macabre, which played sort of like the goriest mix tape you ever dug on. For whatever reason it seemed as if it would be lost on the U.S. as no one stepped up to officially bring it here. Until now.

Macabre 's Indonesian directors - known as the Mo Brothers - are refocusing their efforts on Goddamn Motherfucking Ghouls . "Refocusing" being the word because another film they had in the works, Killers , has been temporarily placed on hold because of the crisis in Japan. Twitch says their latest endeavor tells of a group of folks in a hotel defending themselves from ghouls. You can check out some teaser artwork, right here . The Mo Brothers landed on the genre map with their short film Dara , which gave way to the feature film Macabre .

This year's festival collection of horror shorts was generally above-average mixed bag. There are four, in particular, that simply astounded me, and the seven remaining films varied from decent fun to pointless exercises in horror standards. Following are my brief takes on all the films shown. Dara: Dir. Timo Tjahjanto & Kimo Tjahjanto, Indonesia, 2009, 26 min This film, about a mysteriously quiet and adorable chef with a Saw-sized secret, does a good job of avoiding your typical torture porn route. Set up as your standard man-meets-woman, man-wakes-up-in-woman's-torture-lab scenario, Dara is pleasantly self-aware. Though the ending is far too obvious and trite (come on, she is a chef that butchers people), the bulk of the film is great at being funny while keeping a straight face. Else: Dir. Thibault Emin, France, 2009, 16 min Possibly my favorite film of the collection, Else is a beautiful piece of body horror and a surprisingly touching romance.

Raise your hand if you’ve ever been to a film festival. Remember when the movie started up and it didn’t seem at all like the one you thought you came to see, until you suddenly realized what you were watching was actually one of those annoying short films? If this is you, stop reading now. The short film is an integral part of the festival experience, especially the downright twisted ones shown at Fantastic Fest in Austin, TX.
Technically, a short film plays before each feature here, but Short Fuse combines the best of the rest of these little pieces of celluloid into two hours of head-spinning mayhem. Now, it’s not that these films weren’t worthy of being played in front of a feature; rather, they’re so damn good the programmers felt that it wasn’t worth upstaging someone else’s hard work, and Short Fuse was born.

[We’ve had a couple false alarms on this one but this is it: the final, authorized trailer for Indonesian slasher Macabre, all buffed and polished and ready for your perusal. And there is also this lovely little public service announcement that they whipped up as well.]
Fresh off the film’s main villain scooping an award for Best Actress at PiFan the full trailer for much-anticipated Indonesian slasher Macabre has now arrived. The feature debut from The Mo Brothers, Macabre takes many of the characters and aspects of the scenario from the Mo’s much loved short film Dara, expands things out a bit and cranks up the blood to wild extremes. This is one vicious little ride of a film. Check my review at the link below and the trailer below the break.
