In Bo Burnham’s brilliant pandemic-fueled Netflix special Inside, there’s a lyric that often comes to mind during media outrage news cycles. It’s from the song “That Funny Feeling” — a rundown of dystonic sentiments about modern life — and goes like this: “The backlash to the backlash to the thing that’s just begun.”
In this case, the “thing that’s just begun” was Barbie receiving eight Oscar nominations on Tuesday. Writer-director Greta Gerwig and star Margot Robbie were nominated for writing and producing, respectively, with the movie’s screenplay and best picture nods. But Robbie wasn’t nominated for best actress and Gerwig was not nominated for best director.
The backlash was the online outrage over those snubs, with everyone from star Ryan Gosling to Hillary Clinton expressing their strong disappointment at the Academy’s voting (Clinton trying to push the hashtag “#HillaryBarbie” was probably the most unintentionally...

Five years after scoring back-to-back Emmy wins for helming the 89th and 90th Oscars, Glenn Weiss could clinch his fifth Best Variety Special Directing trophy for his work on the latest Academy Awards ceremony. Given the knowledge that Jimmy Kimmel hosted said two 2010s Oscars events as well as the one Weiss is currently nominated for, a majority of Gold Derby’s Emmy predictors expect history to simply repeat itself, and they are wise to think so.
Weiss’s most formidable challengers in this contest are producing Emmy winner Jay-Z and seven-time directing nominee Hamish Hamilton, who are recognized for conducting Rihanna’s halftime performance at the most recent Super Bowl. Also in the mix are the directors of the stand-up specials “Chris Rock: Selective Outrage” and “Wanda Sykes: I’m an Entertainer” and the career retrospective “Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love.”

Baby J is back on the streets! Five years after the immense success of his special “Kid Gorgeous,” John Mulaney returned with his third Netflix comedy special “John Mulaney: Baby J” on April 25. Previously titled “From Scratch” during his comedy tour, the show provides insight into Mulaney’s high-profile, scandal-laden year. A public stint in rehab, a divorce announcement, and a surprise baby turned the comedy star into a tabloid talking point.
The 80-minute special provides further evidence of Mulaney’s considerable talent as a comedian. There’s no denying the man knows how to craft a joke and deliver a punch-line. His manner of speech and delivery has made him a unique voice and accelerated his success. “Baby J” contains some excellently conceived bits including his star-studded intervention, the frustration of not being recognized at rehab and his quest to quickly buy and sell a Rolex for drug money.

The last round of winners of the 82nd Peabody Awards were announced on Thursday, capping off a celebration of storytelling that honored 30 programs across broadcast and streaming media from 2021.
A collection of 19 jury members — all industry professionals, media scholars, critics, and journalists — pored over more than 1,200 submissions and revealed the winners over a multi-day virtual ceremony with presenters like Melissa McCarthy, Riz Ahmed, and Alicia Keys.
In the Entertainment category, the voting body especially highlighted bright, innovative comedies like FX’s “Reservation Dogs,” Peacock’s “We Are Lady Parts,” and HBO Max’s “Sort Of,” which not only bring laughs but introduce audiences to stories from people of historically underrepresented backgrounds. Among the documentaries awarded, projects like Hulu’s “Summer of Soul,” PBS’s “Mr. Soul!,” and Netflix’s “High on the Hog” gave viewers a deeper knowledge of Black American cultural history.

‘Underground Railroad,’ ‘Bo Burnham: Inside’ & ‘Summer of Soul’ Round Out 2022 Peabody Award Winners
The Peabody Awards finished announcing its 82nd class of winners this morning and you could argue it saved the best for last. Joining previous winners “Hacks,” “Dopesick,” “Sort Of” and “Reservation Dogs” were Barry Jenkins’ “The Underground Railroad,” the celebrated Netflix special “Bo Burnham: Inside” and the Oscar-winning documentary “Summer of Soul,” among others. Intriguingly, in its third year of virtual presentations, it was somewhat odd that Bo Burnham did not participate.

Amazon Prime Video’s “The Underground Railroad” and Netflix’s “Bo: Burnham: Inside” are among the final round of entertainment series to be honored by the Peabody Awards this year. The last crop of winners were announced Thursday morning.
“The Underground Railroad” award was presented by Ibram X. Kendi. “In Colson Whitehead’s 2016 novel, the figuratively magical network that aided enslaved people in their pursuit of freedom took on a real mythical valence: the miracle of The Underground Railroad was powered by a literal locomotive,” said Peabody in its description of the winner. “Director Barry Jenkins’s adaptation of Whitehead’s book follows the enslaved Cora, weaving in an immersive sensory experience of the land that both aided and foiled her, poignant moments of connection between characters spanning generations, and weighty lessons about the utter devastation of the transatlantic slave trade.”
