Exclusive: Wattpad/Webtoons has hired Josh Campbell & Matt Stuecken to adapt I’m the Grim Reaper from the webtoon created by Grave Weaver.
Sam Raimi and Zainab Azizi will executive produce the series with Weaver, who’ll also team on the development process.
I’m the Grim Reaper centers on Scarlet, a young woman who wakes up in the ninth circle of hell with no idea how she got there. Satan offers to send Scarlet back to Earth if she’ll work as his reaper. But it doesn’t take long for Scarlet to realize that Satan’s offer is even worse than she feared. The story slots perfectly into Raimi’s wheelhouse, striking a deft balance between scares, gore and humor.
Campbell & Stuecken sold their procedural The Interpreter to NBC last season, with Michael Peterson showrunning and Morris Chestnut attached to star. This season, they...

When Wattpad Webtoon Studios was preparing to release the drama “Float” this year, author Kate Marchant asked for a little help from her fans. The Lionsgate film was based on her story, and now she presented three movie posters to her followers, asking them to pick their favorite.
“I can feel your readers shifting in their seats,” Aron Levitz, president of Wattpad Webtoon Studios, says with a laugh. “All those creative execs are going, ‘Wait a minute, people knew about it before it went out? Are you sure that’s Ok?’”
For Levitz, the answer is a resounding yes. His company is shaking up the traditional approach to creating film and TV adaptations by putting the power in the hands of fans.
Just last month, the third movie in the “Through My Window” series, adapted from Wattpad author Ariana Godoy’s webnovels, dominated the Netflix film charts, amassing 14 million views...

Spain’s film and TV industries are in their second wave as standout content providers for global streamers. Some of the country’s most intriguing titles will take the international stage this weekend at MipTV in Cannes.
Built on a foundation of hits such as “The Red Band Society,” “Grand Hotel,” “Velvet” and “Locked Up,” a new era of internationally renowned content creation in Spain kicked off in 2018 with Alex Pina’s blockbuster series “Money Heist,” picked up by Netflix.
Since then, Spain has enjoyed a place among the steadiest content suppliers for major players worldwide, taking advantage of its often character-driven dramas, high-quality creators and producers, and a language spoken by more than 600 million people around the globe.
Although the market is continuously evolving, local industry has adapted to different new business models, entering bigger and more ambitious productions, often via co-production. Spanish fiction’s global popularity continues to grow to accommodate audience appetites.

Through Sunday, “Mean Girls” was the highest-grossing domestic film two months into 2024.
Its total is $15 million less than, though still quite close to, the longer-running “Anyone but You” (Sony), similarly with significant female appeal. But the results for the first week with both available show that Will Gluck’s Australian-set rom-com is doing much better at home than the musical remake of the hit 2004 high school clique satire.
Meanwhile, little is more normal than a new original Tyler Perry film placing immediately at #1 on Netflix. “Mea Culpa,” starring Kelly Rowland as an attorney who takes on a tough murder defense to enhance her chances at partnership at her firm, is the hyphenate’s first film since 2022 and third consecutive production for the streamer.

Can the scorching romance that started with a shared Wi-Fi network maintain its connection? That’s the question at the heart of Through My Window 3: Looking at You (A través de tu Mirada),the third (and apparently final) sequel to Through My Window (A Través de mi Ventana) and Through My Window: Across the Sea (A Través del Mar), the hit Spanish language YA films directed by Marçal Forés, based on a book trilogy by co-creator Ariana Godoy.
The tragic events and tumultuous finale of Through My Window: Across the Sea put an end to Raquel and Ares’ already fraying relationship too. At the close of the summer, the star-crossed couple (played by Clara Galle and Julio Peña) break up seemingly for good. But when Ares and Raquel find themselves back in Barcelona for the winter, things heat up again. Desire’s a powerful force, but is theirs strong...

Valentine’s Day is done and dusted, but the season of romance and love is far from over. Spanish films are known for their over-the-top romance with a story that have a habit of titillating the audience. Through My Window is no different from the first two films in the series and other films in this genre.
Marçal Forés’ Netflix film, Through My Window: Looking at You is the third movie in the romance drama series and is a continuation of Across the Sea. The last film ends with Raquel and Ares’ inevitable breakup. The third film is about Raquel awaiting the release of her book while simultaneously working in a toy shop during the holiday season in Barcelona. Raquel is also invited to the launch party of the book, which will happen on the night of New Year’s Eve. Raquel is in a relationship with Gregory at this point,...

Through My Window, the Spanish Netflix Original, is a series of three films adapted from the book written by Ariana Godoy. The three movies span through three different stages of the lives of the main characters, and they are surrounded by their family and friends who shape their lives. Raquel and Ares come from two different financial backgrounds, yet they find a way to fall in love and remain inseparable. There are several characters that motivate them to be better people, a process that takes three whole films to come to a pass.

Orson Welles famously started but never finished an adaptation in Spain of Don Quixote, Miguel de Cervantes’ beloved 17th-century novel. Terry Gilliam’s first attempt to shoot his take on Quixote fell apart so spectacularly in 2000 that it resulted in a widely viewed “unmaking-of” documentary titled, grimly, Lost in La Mancha.
But they weren’t just tilting at windmills. Gilliam completed The Man Who Killed Don Quixote nearly two decades later, making it one of literally dozens of screen adaptations from around the world based on the widely published novel. In April, Oscar-winning director Alejandro Amenábar (The Sea Inside)will start shooting on The Captive, an origin tale about a young, storytelling Cervantes in an Algiers prison in 1575.

A new film industry superclass is emerging in Spain: movies powered or co-backed by its streaming giants.
Perhaps the biggest example, Netflix Spain’s Andes flight disaster “Society of the Snow,” scored two Academy Award nominations last month.
Now, in the run-up to Berlin, London-based Film Constellation has acquired most world sales rights to “The Captive,” from Oscar winner Alejandro Amenábar (“The Sea Inside”) and Mod Producciones, a $15 million period adventure epic on the literary makings of “Quixote”author Miguel de Cervantes, held to ransom in a Moorish corsair jail.
Film Factory Ent. will take to market Iciar Bollain’s “I Am Nevenka,” about a feminist pioneer in Spain, and an untitled project from “Prison 77’s” Alberto Rodriguez, two fruit of the first movie slate from Movistar Plus+, the biggest Spanish pay TV/SVOD player, announced in January.
Spanish movies overperform on Netflix and Movistar Plus+. As of Feb.

‘Elite’ Producer Zeta Studios, Wattpad Webtoon Studios Ink Latin America First-Look Deal (Exclusive)
Miami — In a potentially powerful alliance, Spain’s Zeta Studios, producer of Netflix megahit “Elite,” has signed to develop Latin American Spanish-language webnovels from Wattpad Webtoon Studios, the online publisher via Webtoon of web novel “Through My Window.” Its movie makeover ranks as Netflix’s fourth most-viewed non-English film ever.
Both companies will also partner on projects in Spain on a first priority non-exclusive basis, they announced Tuesday, just before first panel sessions at the second edition of Content America, the Miami TV market and forum.
The pact marks another key step in Zeta Studios’ expansion in Latin America. Driving into Spanish-language movies and series, Amazon Studios is hoping to repeat the success of “Argentina, 1985” with big Spanish period production “Hildegart,” starring Najwa Nimri and Alba Planas (“Skam España”), which wrapped production Aug. 19 in Madrid.
“Hildegart” has shot in the Spanish capital filming seven weeks and some days at historical heritage sites such as Spain’s Congress, Madrid’s Puerta del Sol central square, and its Atheneum.
Directed by Paula Ortiz, “Hildegart” is a fact-based tale of the extraordinary and tragic life of Spain’s Hildegart Rodríguez, born in 1914, a child prodigy raised by her mother to be a model for future women, who gave conferences on feminism and sexuality from the age of 11, writing on prostitution, contraception and eugenics – her monograph “Profilaxis anticoncepcional” sold 8,000 copies in one week just in Madrid – and accompanied H.G. Wells when he made a visit to Spain.

While the Netflix Top 10 film chart for the week of June 26 remained fairly consistent from the previous week, “The Witcher” Season 3 burst into the English TV chart in first place. Read on for this week’s analysis.
“The Witcher” has been one of the streamer’s most popular series, so when Season 3 – the final one with Henry Cavill – was released last week, it was no surprise it did quite well with 15.2 million views (about 73 million viewing hours divided by the 4.82 runtime for the season). It was the #1 watched show in over 75 countries, including the United States, Canada, and all of Europe and Africa, making the Top 10 in 91 countries total.

There weren’t too many surprises in Netflix’s Top 10 chart for the week of June 19 with Chris Hemsworth‘s action sequel “Extraction 2” holding strong and Charlie Brooker‘s “Black Mirror” Season 6 taking over the TV chart. Read on for this week’s analysis. (A quick reminder that Netflix recently changed their system to focus on total actual views vs. hours viewed.)
Hemsworth held the Top 2 spots with “Extraction 2” and the original “Extraction,” which had 42.2 million views and 13.8 million, respectively. “Extraction 2” had 87.3 million hours viewed just this week, which should eventually get it into Netflix’s most-watched list along with the original “Extraction.” It was the #1 most-watched film in over 85 territories.
There were two new entries in third and fourth place on the English language film chart, the documentary “Take Care of Maya” about a 10-year-old with a rare illness, which got 9.2 million views, and the Tia Williams...

The latest season of Charlie Brooker’s mind-bending anthology series “Black Mirror” landed at the top of Netflix’s Top 10 English TV List with 11.6 million views.
And for the second week in a row, Chris Hemsworth has dominated the top two spots on the English Films List. “Extraction 2” currently sits at the No. 1 spot with 42.2 million views, making it the most-watched title on Netflix this week. Its predecessor, “Extraction,” wasn’t far behind with 13.8 million viewers, securing the No. 2 spot on its list. In fact, the “Extraction” franchise has seen 108.4 million views since June 12 — four days before the sequel premiered on the streaming service — which makes it the first film franchise to hold the top two sports for two weeks in a row.
The action movies were then followed by the nightmarish documentary “Take Care of Maya,” which saw 9.2 million views. The rom-com “The Perfect Find” (7 million), the children-focused...

Through My Window, the first of the two films directed by Marçal Forés, is a Spanish Netflix Original about the young yet passionate love between two people who meet most bizarrely. Raquel and Ares are neighbors, but both come from two different styles of upbringing. But that does not stop Raquel from stalking the man and peeping into his room, which is visible from her bedroom window. Meanwhile, Ares, too, was intrigued by this girl, and he hacked into her Wi-Fi router and her laptop to gain access and find out who she was. The meet-cute is not a friendly one, but they end up purposely running into each other too many times and slowly falling in love.

The first film, Through My Window, a Spanish Netflix original, was all about the glorification of a toxic relationship. The same team brings you the sequel, Across the Sea, which is a continuation of previous film. Unfortunately, the latest instalment, just like the previous one, does not serve the genre it is based on. Director Marçal Forés brings you the same cast with a lot of soapy drama thrown into the mix.
Through My Window: Across the Sea is as literal as the name suggests because the film is set on the Mediterranean coast of Spain, where the friends and family of Raquel and Ares descend to celebrate the San Juan festival. Amidst all of this, the once hot and heavy couple is now in a long-distance relationship. With Ares studying medicine in Stockholm and Raquel studying literature in Barcelona, there is trouble in paradise because they end up spending...

Spanish Netflix originals for a while have tended to indulge in relationship-based stories because sometimes the audiences do not wish to indulge in Avant Garde storytelling that undermines their expectations. They would want to watch something that allows them to sit back, relax, and enjoy. Why is that? No one knows. Through My Window is yet another young adult movie on the above-mentioned romance drama that borderline normalizes stalking, allowing the audience to be mesmerized by it. Instead, the viewers should ask questions about why such stories on toxic relationships are given traction. There is only one answer. Young adult adaptations such as these sell, and by the looks of things, people enjoy guilty pleasure cinema from time to time, and movies like Through My Window allows that.

"A bit of San Juan fun won't hurt anybody." Netflix has revealed the full official trailer for another Spanish romantic dramedy called Through My Window: Across the Sea, originally known as A Través del Mar. It's actually a sequel to the Spanish sultry romance called Through My Window from last year, about a connection between Ares and Raquel - two extremely attractive Spanish people. In this follow-up, Ares is studying medicine in Stockholm and Raquel follows her dream of becoming a writer while they maintain a long-distance relationship that has not been easy for either of them. Now the summer is finally here and the long-awaited reunion. Will the distance be a problem for their relationship? The film stars Julio Peña, Clara Galle, Natalia Azahara, Guillermo Lasheras, Emilia Lazo, Eric Masip, Hugo Arbués, and Andrea Chaparro. It's definitely extra cheesy, but does look passionate if anyone is into this kind of stuff.

In April 2018, Netflix announced that Spanish heist thriller “Money Heist” (“La Casa de Papel”) had become the U.S. streaming service’s most-watched non-English series ever.
With a Spanish series crowned as the first foreign-language blockbuster at the company that has transformed entertainment worldwide, Spain’s expansion — long nurtured by hits such as “The Red Band Society,” “Grand Hotel” and “Locked Up” — well and truly lifted off.
Building on that success, in March 2021, Spanish prime minister Pedro Sánchez unveiled the Avs Hub Plan, which would invest €1.6 billion ($1.8 billion) into Spain’s audiovisual sector.
For a country in which the word españolada was used to write off supposed second-rate homegrown fare, the re-positioning of Spain’s film and TV industries as core drivers in its digital post-pandemic “reindustrialization” is little short of a revolution. Spain, Cannes Marché du Film’s 2023 country of honor, now accounts for seven of the 20 entries in...

Top Spanish producer Nostromo Pictures, which is behind Netflix hit “Through My Window,” is partnering with Beta Fiction Spain to launch “Hermano Caballo,” a documentary by Marcel Barrera, director of “Mediterraneo: The Law of the Sea” and “100 Meters.”
“Hermano Caballo” marks the first documentary produced by Nostromo Pictures and also the first handled by Beta Fiction Spain, the Spanish arm of Jan Mojto’s European studio Beta Film, which launched last year.
The documentary focuses on reknowned Catalan wrangler Santi Serra, developer of a natural training technique based on creating bonds with horses and learning through play.
Barrena shows how Serra develops his own language with animals, especially with his horses, managing to communicate with them and establish strong relationships of trust and friendship.
“Hermano” is scheduled for a Spanish release before the summer and, to be announced soon, a festival that will serve as the doc-feature’s launch pad.

It’s an iconic scene when dashing anti-hero Ser Jaime Lannister charges his white steed up the grand Baroque steps leading to the Sept of Baelor in Episode 6, Season 6 of HBO’s wildly popular “Game of Thrones.” But the locale is actually in front of the Cathedral of Girona, Catalonia. In fact, a number of Girona’s streets and locations stood in for Braavos and King’s Landing in “Got.”
In another scene, the Arab Baths of Girona, ensconced in a late Romanesqu-style building built in 1194, stand in for the Braavos Baths where a persecuted Arya takes refuge.
“Having ‘Got’ film some Season 6 scenes in Girona in 2015 was a defining moment and marked the beginning of an era,” says Catalan Film Commissioner Carlota Guerrero. “It was the same year when Spain launched its tax incentives and when international productions began to explore Spain alongside new production service companies and discover a rich diversity of locations.

Over 2003-11, Catalonia’s regional film hub was the envy of Europe. Now, it’s enjoying the full flush of a second renaissance and growing its international impact in film and now TV. In 2022, three Catalan directors had titles in the main competition in Berlin and Cannes, more than Italy (two), Germany (one) or the U.K. (none). Helmer Carla Simon’s “Alcarràs” won Berlin’s top prize, the Golden Bear.
In 2023, five Catalan features have made Berlin’s fest cut, led by Estibaliz Urresola’s competition contender “20,000 Species of Bees,” Alvaro Gago’s “Matria” in Panorama and Carla Subirana’s “Sica,” a Generation 14plus player.

Mario Casas, one of Spain’s biggest film and TV stars, and Goya Award winner actress Anna Castillo, will headline “Escape,” the new film by writer-director Rodrigo Cortés.
Produced by Adrián Guerra and Núria Valls at Barcelona-based Nostromo Pictures, “Escape” is a free adaptation of same-title novel penned by Spanish author Enrique Rubio.
Nostromo announced the new film project after completing an intense 2022, in which the company lensed seven films and released two more titles – Marçal Forés’ “Through My Window” and Oriol Paulo’s “God’s Crooked Lines” – both achieving a standout global reach.
“Escape’s” story turns on N., a young man who wants to live in prison and will do whatever it takes to get there, raising questions such as if those who care about him will get to stop him from committing increasingly serious crimes and how far will the judge go to not grant him his proposal.

To be directed by Catalan helmer Roger Gual, the script has been adapted for the big screen by Gual himself along with close collaborator, Spanish Mexico-based scriptwriter Antón Goenechea. It will be the first project produced by former Netflix exec and industry veteran Juan Mayne in his new position at Nadie Es Perfecto, which he began earlier this year.
A romantic thriller with Romeo and Juliette shades of a forbidden love between two star-crossed youths separated by a social chasm, the project will be set on Spain’s Costa del Sol and promises to take a glancing look at urban real estate corruption in the area.

Netflix is readying the debut of crime original “Santo,” which bows Sept., 16, marking a new milestone for the U.S. streaming giant – its first fiction project shot between Spain and Brazil, two of its key overseas markets.
A major undertaking, the series packs experienced partners and behind-the-camera talent. Produced by Nostromo Pictures (“Through My Window”) with support from Prodigo Films (“Invisible City”), the six-episode series is created by Carlos López (“La Embajada”) and directed by Vicente Amorim (“Yakuza Princess”), an auteur who has consolidated in the last few years as one of Brazil’s foremost action series helmers, having been attached to direct Netflix banner title “Senna.”
“Santo” follows two dogged but divergent cops, Cardona and Millán, as they chase an elusive drug trafficker implicated in occult-linked crimes occurring between Salvador de Bahia, Brazil and Madrid.

In a time of reboots, remakes and sequels, Wattpad Webtoon is aiming to bring more original stories to Hollywood and counter that franchise bloat. As Wattpad Webtoon Studios president Aron Levitz tells Variety, the goal is to show production banners and media platforms that loyal webcomic and series fans will tune in to their TV adaptations of those titles. And so far, it’s working.
The Webtoon-adapted K-drama “Sweet Home” and Wattpad-originated young adult film series “The Kissing Booth,” both on Netflix, has given the company an early boost in making Hollywood inroads. And now, the recent hire of former Fox Entertainment and AMC Entertainment president David Madden as head of global entertainment is another example of the company’s move to further ramp up its entertainment industry presence.
“We’re better and stronger with two massive IP libraries, united with tons of stories and over 166 million people around the world coming to create,...

In February, Carla Simon’s “Alcarràs” walked off with Spain’s first Berlin Golden Bear in nearly 40 years as Spain notched up its biggest main competition presence at the Berlinale since 1997.
This May, Spain has four movies selected for Cannes – Albert Serra’s Competition entry “Pacifiction”; Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s “The Beasts,” in Premiere; Elena López Riera’s Directors’ Fortnight bow “The Water”; and José Luis López Linares’ “Goya, Carrière and the Ghost of Buñuel,” a Cannes Classics doc feature. That reps a Cannes presence roughly on par with recent standout years such as 2018 and 2019.
With Netflix launching “Through My Window” in February, three of the streaming giant’s five most-watched non-English language movies are from Spain.

It used to be hard to find non-English films. The rest of the world's cinema was shoved into one "foreign" category, taking up a 10th of the space of the "domestic, English-dominate" variety. Obviously, we still see that at award shows like the Oscars, but even there, things are finally changing. The reason behind that change has a lot to do with how we consume films. Covid aside, we're all streaming more of our movies, and online there's no reason why we can't have access to all films, regardless of language.
That's certainly what Netflix has done, and it's been paying big dividends as non-English productions break through in the global marketplace. It's also great for everyone - it means more titles for movie-lovers and more opportunities for global filmmakers. Your algorithm may not be showing you as many Spanish titles as you'd like, so we've rounded up 25 choices to get you started.
