- Tallinn enters Picard's subconscious mind to help him wake from a coma and face his deepest fears; Seven and Raffi search for Jurati fearing she's succumbed to her inner monster; Rios struggles to hide the truth about himself from Teresa.
- Inside his mind, Picard is in a routine psychiatric evaluation session with a man named Maurice. Picard says that he is claustrophobic and hence chose to spend his life in the infinite universe. The session is going nowhere, and Picard wants to end it. Maurice says that they have an hour together and have only spent 20 minutes. He asks Picard to tell a story.
Picard tells a story in which his mother Yvette used to spend time with him during his childhood, telling him all types of stories. She would also draw on the glass windows of their home, images of space, galaxies and aliens. Yvette was paranoid about monsters chasing her and Picard through their house. Jean-Luc tells Maurice that he found himself alone in the dungeon after his mother was carried away by the monsters.
Tallinn enters Picard's mind. Tallinn finds the boy Jean-Luc in a dungeon, unable to leave. Jean-Luc says that monsters carried his mother away and his mother asked him to stay put if they ever got separated, which is why he is unable to leave.
In parallel, the therapy session of Picard goes on with Maurice. Maurice says that Picard keeps everybody at an arm's length, maybe because he is hiding something from the others. Picard places the value of virtue over everything else and maybe what he is hiding is a cause of shame for him.
In the dungeon, Tallinn and the boy Jean-Luc are attacked by monsters. But Tallinn is able to fight them off as the monsters have no power. Tallinn asks Jean-Luc to exit the dungeon as else he will be stuck there forever. Jean-Luc is able to open a door that leads out of the dungeon, and they reunite with Picard, whose session with Maurice suddenly dissolves.
Picard relives part of a memory from his childhood where his apparently abusive father Maurice (James Callis) chased Picard's younger self and his mother Yvette through the house. Picard confronts Maurice for ruining Yvette. Jean-Luc calls Maurice a monster. Tallinn helps Picard realize that his mother was actually struggling with mental illness and Maurice was just trying to protect her and Picard. Yvette needed help, but she never accepted her condition. She kept trying to take Jean-Luc into the tunnels underneath the vineyard, which were dangerous. And Maurice had to eventually lock her up to protect them both.
Teresa returns to the clinic with her son. She sees the mind meld session between Tallinn and Picard. Rios has no option but to get her involved in stabilizing Picard till Tallinn is able to complete her work.
Picard wakes up from his coma and Tallinn reveals that she is actually Romulan and possibly Laris's ancestor. But Tallinn knows that there was more to Picard's story, which he didn't reveal to Tallinn by waking up.
Picard theorizes that Q may have a personal stake in his "trial". Picard wants to understand Q and if he can do that, he can go on the offensive. Picard asks Guinan to summon Q using an El-Aurian ritual; the ritual fails just as FBI agent Martin Wells (Jay Karnes) enters the bar and arrests them based on surveillance footage of Picard using his transporter.
Rios secretly brings Teresa and her son onto La Sirena, confessing that he is a time-traveler.
Jurati has been missing since the gala. Raffi and Seven discover that the ship's computers have been sabotaged with Borg encryption codes. Seven is able to break through the encryption and accesses the ship's computers. They begin tracking Agnes after they see in ship's logs that the Borg codes were implanted in the ship by Agnes herself.
They find a bar where she smashed a window and realize that the Queen is trying to create more Endorphins in Agnes until she has enough power to assimilate more people and become a new Borg Queen.
