From sci-fi epics to family films to musical comedies, Ewan McGregor seems capable of doing it all in a career that has encompassed celebrated work on the stage, on screen and in television.
In a career that has lasted more than two decades, McGregor is no stranger in the awards world. He won a Golden Globe for his work in the TV series of “Fargo” and earned two nominations for his film work in “Moulin Rouge!” and “Salmon Fishing in the Yemen.” For television, he received three Primetime Emmy Award noms for acting in “Fargo” and “ER,” as well as a nomination for narrating the documentary “Highlands: Scotland’s Wild Heart.” And for film, he has garnered three Screen Actors Guild ensemble nominations for his work in “Little Voice,” “Moulin Rouge!” and “August: Osage County.”
Let’s raise a glass to McGregor and celebrate by counting down and ranking his 13 best screen performances.

The first Golden Globe Award nominations issued by the new Golden Globes organization — an overhaul of the late Hollywood Foreign Press Association, with a lot of new members, new rules and a new broadcasting partner in CBS — were issued early Monday morning, and you know what? They’re pretty unobjectionable.
Yes, the categories are larger than they used to be, expanding from five to six slots, which certainly helps to make more stakeholders happy on a morning like this — but also increases the possibility of more bizarre nominees of the sort the HFPA was famous for, like Burlesque, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen and The Tourist. And yet, with only a couple of exceptions — a best musical/comedy actress nom for Jennifer Lawrence’s turn in the summer rom-com No Hard Feelings and a best original song nom for a Bruce Springsteen song from a film that I didn’t even remember existed,...

They faced each other in a box office royale that wound up mushrooming to become the biggest box office weekend of the year. Now, Warner Bros.’ Barbie and Universal’s Oppenheimer will go toe-to-toe at the Golden Globes on January 7.
Interestingly enough, coming away from the Golden Globes nominations Monday morning, Barbie bests Oppenheimer by only one nom, 9 to 8.
Barbie‘s edge over Oppenheimer comes in the Original Song Category, where the movie counts an unprecedented three nominations for “Dance the Night Away”, “I’m Just Ken” and “What Was I Made For?”
In addition, Barbie also counts nominations for Best Musical/Comedy, Best Actress Musical Comedy (Margot Robbie), Male Supporting Role (Ryan Gosling), Best Screenplay (Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach), Best Director (Gerwig), and a slot in the new category Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement.

As of this writing, Gold Derby’s 31 Experts can’t decide who will win Best Movie/Limited Actor at the 2021 Emmys. A leading 17 of these pundits predict Paul Bettany (“WandaVision”) will prevail on Sunday night, with 13 more picking Hugh Grant (“The Undoing”) and one going out on a limb for Lin-Manuel Miranda (“Hamilton”). But I think they’re all wrong. Ewan McGregor (“Halston”) is my pick to win for playing famed American fashion designer Halston in Ryan Murphy‘s Netflix limited series. Even though the Scottish actor is a bit of an underdog at the Emmys, don’t count him out just yet. Read on to see my four reasons why I think McGregor will beat the odds.

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.
Today, Conor and I get blunt. Emily Blunt! As Jungle Cruise opens in theaters and on Disney+, our Blunt B-Sides include: The Adjustment Bureau, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, Arthur Newman, and Wild Mountain Thyme. Additionally, we discuss the star’s first two films which broke her through and her eventual rise to leading lady status a few years later.
There’s heavy chatter on what exactly makes Blunt so dynamic, a detour into how Gulliver’s Travels prevented her from playing Black Widow for Marvel, and how two of these B-sides recall the Katharine Hepburn/Spencer Tracy films from Hollywood past.
Other topics include Matt Damon’s criticisms of Tony Gilroy’s The Bourne Ultimatum script, the...

Most moviegoers who witnessed the 2020 Sundance Film Festival premiere of “Palm Springs” probably did not expect that it would be the only traditional comedy nominated for Best Musical or Comedy at this year’s Golden Globes. After all, comedies (and dramedies) have disproportionately dominated the category for the past decade, while only eight musicals have managed to snag bids. However, the 2021 lineup turned out to be another deviation from the norm in a year full of them.
Joining “Palm Springs” is the unconventional mockumentary “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” which takes the subversiveness of its predecessor to a whole new level. The other three slots are filled by “The Prom,” a standard musical adaptation of the Broadway musical, “Hamilton,” a live stage recording of the legit hit, and “Music,” an original musical drama. The last time three musicals competed against each other for the top honor was in 2008, and it only happened six times before that.

The Golden Globes announce their nominations on Wednesday morning, February 3, and we’ve been predicting who will make the cut for months. But there are a number of contenders who aren’t among our predicted nominees that I think we should watch for. Keep an eye out for these 13 potential surprises on Wednesday morning.
SEEGolden Globes will finally say ‘this is the way’ to ‘The Mandalorian’ in two key categories
Best Film Drama: “Da 5 Bloods”
(Currently ranked eighth with 44/1 odds)
We’re predicting a Best Director nomination for Spike Lee, but we’re not currently betting on the film in the top category. However, this timely film about Black soldiers returning to Vietnam decades after their service could strike a chord after year of Black Lives Matter protests. And the Globes have embraced Lee in the past, nominating him for directing “Do the Right Thing” (1989) even though the Oscars ultimately snubbed him.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is a sociable group — its roughly 90 members meet for press conferences and screenings in Los Angeles, take junket trips together to movie sets around the world, attend countless receptions over the course of awards season and then celebrate at a crowded awards show surrounded by so many parties that the Los Angeles fire marshal must have nightmares for months. But they haven’t been able to do any of those things during the pandemic, which makes it much harder to predict what we’ll see when nominations for the 78th annual Golden Globe Awards are announced on Wednesday.
After a rough year in which the members met only virtually, and in which their president, Lorenzo Soria, died at the age of 68, the kind of post-screening chatter that gave some sense of what the voters were thinking has been absent. But here are our best guesses...

Are we underestimating Jamie Dornan at the Golden Globes? He stars in “Wild Mountain Thyme” as the heir to an Irish farm whose father (Christopher Walken) threatens to hand the land to his American cousin instead of to him. Dornan is also the object of affection for a lovelorn neighbor (Emily Blunt). This wouldn’t be the first time the Globes embraced a warm romantic comedy.
SEEDon’t underestimate ‘Wild Mountain Thyme’ in the Golden Globes’ wide-open comedy/musical categories
It’s been a while since an actor in a straight-up rom-com has won Best Film Comedy/Musical Actor at the Globes. You have to go back to the 1990s with victors like Hugh Grant (1994’s “Four Weddings and a Funeral”), Tom Cruise (1996’s “Jerry Maguire”) and Jack Nicholson (1997’s “As Good as It Gets”), though romantic leading men have since won in a couple of musicals.

Emily Blunt hasn’t gotten on the Oscars’ radar yet, but the Hollywood Foreign Press Association can’t get enough of her. They’ve given her six Golden Globe nominations to date. So she might be a major dark horse contender for her role in the romance “Wild Mountain Thyme.”
SEEGolden Globe TV contenders: Strong newbies include ‘The Great’ and ‘Ted Lasso,’ but will voters finally catch up with ‘Schitt’s Creek’ instead?
Blunt plays Rosemary, who is in love with a man (Jamie Dornan) in the middle of a family land dispute. It was written and directed by John Patrick Shanley, based on his own Tony-nominated play “Outside Mullingar.” This is Shanley’s third film as a director, and his first since “Doubt” (2008), which earned five Golden Globe nominations and five Oscar nominations 12 years ago.
Granted, “Wild Mountain Thyme” hasn’t gotten reviews as favorable as “Doubt,” but consider Blunt’s track record.

Nine years after directing Meryl Streep to an Oscar for “The Iron Lady,” director Phyllida Lloyd has returned with her new Amazon film “Herself.” It stars Clare Dunne, who also co-wrote the film, as a single mother whose struggles with the housing system emboldens her to build her own house. Things become complicated when her abusive ex-husband returns to attain custody of their children. Critics have made “Herself” the best-reviewed film of Lloyd’s career, with special praise for Dunne’s revelatory performance.
“Herself” is already making a splash ahead of its Dec. 30 release, with Dunne picking up a British Independent Film Award nomination for Best Actress and the film earning recognition from multiple festivals. Look out for Irish romantic comedy “Wild Mountain Thyme” to score Golden Globe bids in the comedy/musical film categories when the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announces its nominations on Feb. 3.

Exclusive: Sony has found its Alex Rider – Mrs Wilson star Otto Farrant has been chosen to front the small-screen reboot of the teen superspy.
Farrant, who played Nigel Wilson in the Ruth Wilson-fronted PBS Masterpiece and BBC drama, will play the eponymous character in the series, which is being produced by Sony Pictures Television and British indie Eleventh Hour Films, which optioned the screen rights to Anthony Horowitz’s novels in 2017.
The move comes after the producers opened a wide search for a young actor to play Alex Rider, a reluctant teen superspy who goes on missions to save the world.
Farrant has also previously had small roles in ITV and Netflix drama Marcella, War & Peace, The White Queen and Salmon Fishing in the Yemen.

Happy 48th birthday to that great Scot, Ewan McGregor! From sci-fi epics to family films to musical comedies, McGregor seems capable of doing it all in a career that has encompassed celebrated work on the stage, on screen and in television.

“Captain Marvel” continued its dominance with a $69 million second weekend. The 55 percent second weekend drop is on par with the most recent “Avengers” and “Thor” entries; by contrast, “Wonder Woman” and “Black Panther” each dropped about 44 percent in their second outings.
Of all moviegoers this week, about half went to see “Captain Marvel.” That left the total gross, which will end up somewhat above $140 million, about $10 million above the same weekend last year. That’s two up weekends in a row after a long string of inferior three-day totals. That brings the year-to-date drop to just under 19 percent, with a total take lagging by about $460 million from where things stood in 2018.
The domestic take so far for the Brie Larson starrer is up to $266 million 10 days in, with over $400 million (about where “Wonder Woman” ended up) looking certain. The foreign take of $494 million brings worldwide to $760 million. That makes the...

And the award for most supportive husband goes to…
John Krasinski was every bit the doting husband on Sunday night as he supported wife Emily Blunt at the 2019 Golden Globe Awards.
Blunt was nominated for best actress in a musical or comedy for her role as Mary Poppins in Mary Poppins Returns. And though she lost out to Olivia Colman (The Favourite), Krasinski still made his wife feel like a winner.
As Blunt took the stage to present an award alongside Dick Van Dyke, Krasinski loudly clapped and cheered her on from his seat.

Emily Blunt and John Krasinski proved that their each other’s best red carpet accessory at the 2019 Golden Globes.
The actress, 35, turned heads in a silver, lace-detailed Alexander McQueen gown teamed with matching shoes and a pulled back low bun accented with a sparkling brooch and Neil Lane jewelry while her husband, 39, looked dapper as ever in a navy tuxedo with a black lapel.
Blunt is nominated for best actress in a musical or comedy for her role as Mary Poppins in Mary Poppins Returns. And no one was more excited about the movie than Krasinski.

Olivia Colman has regained her lead over Emily Blunt in the race for Best Comedy/Musical Actress at the Golden Globes just in time, with final voting ending on Wednesday (Jan. 2). Our experts are predicting that the star of “The Favourite” will win on Sunday over, among others, Blunt who headlines the blockbuster “Mary Poppins Returns.”
Colman prevailed with her only previous Golden Globe bid two years ago for “The Night Manager.” That win came in the catch-all supporting performance category over on the TV side. Blunt took home that same trophy in 2007 for the telefilm “Gideon’s Daughter.” Since then she has contended for her leading film roles in the 2009 drama “The Young Victoria,” the 2012 comedy “Salmon Fishing in the Yemen” and the 2014 musical “Into the Woods.”
The 11 Experts casting their vote for Colman are: Thelma Adams (Gold Derby), Erik Davis (Fandango), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Alicia Malone (TCM...

After winning the Golden Globe for BBC America’s telefilm “Gideon’s Daughter” at the 2007 ceremony, then-23-year-old Emily Blunt walked up on the stage like a deer in the headlights. “Oh God,” the up-and-coming actress said as she looked out at the crowd of A-list movie stars and TV legends. “Thank you so much. The Best Actress Oscar race isn’t the only place where Emily Blunt is making a move. The “Mary Poppins Star” is closing in on the top spot in our Golden Globe Best Film Comedy/Musical Actress predictions, with a handful of pundits now betting on her to take home the prize.
Once Olivia Colman was confirmed to be going lead for “The Favourite,” Blunt has been in second place behind her fellow Brit. She remains there, but Colman’s lead has shrunk to 69/20 to 39/10 for Blunt in the past week, thanks to the positive reactions from the “Mary Poppins Returns” screenings. Three Experts, Michael Musto (NewNowNext), Susan King (Gold Derby) and Edward Douglas (Weekend Warrior), are backing Blunt for the win, as are two of our Editors, Chris Beachum and Marcus James Dixon.

Samuel Hadida, the regarded indie French distributor and producer of films including the Resident Evil franchise and the Tony Scott-directed True Romance and Domino, has died at age 64. He passed away Monday at UCLA Santa Monica Hospital after a short illness, according to his brother Victor.
Hadida and Victor owned and managed Metropolitan FilmExport, a top French distributor of American indie films that they founded with their father David. A champion of indie cinema by bringing the likes of Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs and David Fincher’s Seven to French screens, he was a staple at festivals and markets for the past 40 years.

Let’s face it: the “musical” element of the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn.’s Best Picture, Musical or Comedy, category at the Golden Globes is a holdover from a different era, when films that featured production numbers were a staple of the business.
The category was initiated in 1951, the year of “An American in Paris,” and its early days honored films including “The King and I,” “My Fair Lady” and “The Sound of Music” as well as stars like Donald O’Connor in “Singin’ in the Rain.” Lately, however, it has become a repository for critical duds that would otherwise have no lane to swim in — films such as “The Phantom of the Opera,” the 2005 remake of “The Producers,” “Nine,” “Burlesque” and “The Greatest Showman.”
Meanwhile, musical dramas like “Dreamgirls” and “Les Misérables” have at times boxed out true comedies in the category, to say nothing of dramatic biopics that...

One of Paramount’s top awards contenders this year is “A Quiet Place,” a smash box office hit from this past April. Gold Derby had been informed for the past few months that stars Emily Blunt and John Krasinski would be campaigned in the lead acting categories. But now a major category switcheroo announced to us on Tuesday is that both of them will be in the supporting races instead. This move will apply to the campaign for Oscars 2019, Golden Globes, SAG Awards, BAFTA, Critics’ Choice and more (although Academy Awards voters can place contenders wherever they wish).

Sleepy Hollow alum Tom Mison, Frances Fisher (Titanic) and Jacob Ming-Trent (Superfly) have signed on to the cast of Damon Lindelof’s HBO Watchmen pilot, a take on Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ iconic limited comic series. They join previously cast Jeremy Irons, Regina King, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Adelaide Clemens and Andrew Howard.
Set in an alternate history where “superheroes” are treated as outlaws, Watchmen embraces the nostalgia of the original groundbreaking graphic novel while attempting to break new ground of its own. As Lindelof recently noted, the project is not an adaptation of the 12 issues of the comic but an original story that remixes them.
As has been case with all Watchmen castings, no details about the actors’ characters are provided.

The HFPA giveth and, boy, the HFPA taketh away. On the film side this year’s Golden Globes nods were mostly devoid of embarrassing nominations of the “Salmon Fishing in the Yemen” or “The Tourist” variety, but the foreign press members still find ways to put their foot in their mouth (we’ll get to why eventually). As for the television nods the HFPA seems to relish pushing new actresses (rarely actors) so much that even in this era of Peak TV they are overlooking performances that are much more deserving than the shiny new object (metaphorically speaking) that popped up in their screener pile.

Based on the best-selling novel by Lissa Evans, the delightful and heartwarming period piece, Their Finest, arrives on Blu-ray™ (plus Digital HD) and DVD on July 11 from Lionsgate; Digital HD on June 30 and On Demand on July 11 from EuropaCorp. From the producers of Brooklyn and Carol, Their Finest takes place in Britain during World War II and tells the story of a film crew as they create a movie to boost the country’s morale after the Blitz. Gemma Arterton, Sam Claflin and Golden Globe winner Bill Nighy (2007, Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television, Gideon’s Daughter) lead an all-star cast in what Andrew Barker at Variety considers “a relentlessly charming romantic comedy.” Directed by Lone Scherfig (An Education, One Day), the Their Finest Blu-ray and DVD will be available for the suggested retail price of $24.99 and $19.98, respectively.
1940, London, the Blitz. With England’s morale at stake, Catrin (Gemma Arterton), an untried screenwriter, works under fire with a makeshift cast and crew to make a film to lift the nation’s flagging spirits, and inspire America to join the war. Catrin and a fellow writer, Buckley (Sam Claflin), reluctantly joins forces with fading matinee idol Ambrose Hilliard (Bill Nighy) on a movie to warm the hearts of the nation and capture the imagination of the American public.

2017-05-10T06:32:08-07:00Fox Cancels 'Sleepy Hollow'
The luck has run out for Fox's Sleepy Hollow.
The genre drama has been canceled after four seasons at the network.
A year after seeing female lead Nicole Beharie exit the Friday procedural, season four averaged a 0.9 in the demo and 3.2 million total viewers — with seven days of DVR. That's down considerably from the 20th Century Fox Television-produced drama's third run and, even with returns from international sales, not enough to get the Tom Mison starrer to a fifth season.

Rob Brydon has squeezed into those budgie smugglers he has tucked at the back of his drawers to start filming on the upcoming British comedy Swimming with Men alongside a pretty decent cast which includes Charlotte Riley ad Daniel Mays.
The production which is underway today in pools across London, Hertfordshire and Essex, is said to be a heart-warming comedy about a man in the throes of a mid-life crisis who finds meaning in the most unlikely of places: an all-male, middle-aged, amateur synchronised swimming team.
At the heart of the story is Eric, a 40-something stuck in a rut. With his marriage in tatters and his life generally going to pieces, Eric finds unexpected refuge in the company of a motley crew of middle-aged, slightly saggy men, who meet up once a week at the local municipal pool literally and figuratively to tread water together.

It seems unavoidable that Emily Blunt's daughters will stumble upon The Devil Wears Prada - after all, their father, John Krasinski, has seen it over 70 times - but Blunt is lining up plenty of other movies she can't wait to share with her girls as well. For starters, she's already got a few animated films to her name, but there's also Into the Woods, and, of course, her upcoming starring role in Mary Poppins Returns. I recently sat down with Blunt in New York, where we discussed how being a mom has affected the projects she chooses, working with her husband, and what film she hopes her children never find. I would've done Mary Poppins...

The upcoming live-action Disney movie The Nutcracker And The Four Realms has welcomed its first cast member – legendary ballerina Misty Copeland. Her appearance in the movie will mark her first involvement in narrative cinema, having already featured on television reality shows, as well as a documentary about her own early career, A Ballerina’s Tale.
The film will be helmed by Academy Award nominee Lasse Hallstrom (Salmon Fishing In The Yemen, The Shipping News, Chocolat), armed with a script by Ashleigh Powell, who makes her screenwriting debut here. With Mark Gordon (Grey’s Anatomy) producing the project, it is notable that the first casting choice is a strong one – recognizing that Misty Copeland is a world-renowned, award winning talent. It also indicates the tone that Hallstrom will be striving for – evidently mixing his own visual flair with the rich musical history of the tale.

Ewan McGregor chose to tackle a fantastically difficult story for his first foray into directing, and that’s only partially because American Pastoral is so highly regarded.
It isn’t just that the book has received so much critical and popular acclaim, but the fact that an adaptation could so easily go wrong with a story that attempts to tackle the human condition in precisely this way.
Philip Roth’s novel is an almost bizarrely pointed look at how people “work,” and what it means to try to know and understand other people. While the plot, more or less, focuses on a specific incident, it is as much about what happens to anyone if you start really examining the facade everyone puts forward as being “them.”
That’s a tricky movie no matter what the “plot” involves, and it’s the sort of thing that requires a director that really...

The world is in turmoil right now, so it looks like Ewan McGregor's directorial debut, an adaptation of Philip Roth's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel American Pastoral, will be more timely than ever. Lionsgate has just released the first poster and trailer, which taps into civil unrest and piques my interest in a big way. Here's a statement from McGregor that came along with the press release:
I have dreamt of directing a feature for the last 15 years and never found the 'right' story. I wanted to direct, not for the sake of being a director, but because there was a story I Had to tell. Well American Pastoral gave me everything I was looking for. I was incredibly lucky that I had Lakeshore's trust and incredible talent in front of and behind the camera to make Roth's story the film I thought it should be. The creative collaboration with...

It seems impossible, or maybe just stupid: adapt what is perhaps the most acclaimed novel by perhaps our greatest living novelist as your directorial debut, which you’ll also star in as a character with whom, based on the many and very critical descriptions from said most-acclaimed-novel-by-greatest-living-novelist, you don’t even have the greatest resemblance. Here we are, then, with Ewan McGregor‘s American Pastoral, an adaptation of Philip Roth‘s Pulitzer-winning, meta-fictional masterpiece of grieving, complex generational rifts, and glove-making — not exactly a Sundance-premiering dramedy.
I very much hope not to look like a fool in four months’ time when I say, now, that the first preview points towards something with character — perhaps rather good, even. Early days, yes (hence the disclaimer), yet this is a fine sampling of period-evoking design, shots and palette that evoke some sense of visual purpose — hello, The American and Control Dp Martin Ruhe — and,...

Even while it was in production, Tom Tykwer’s A Hologram for the King fostered a dual atmosphere of intrigue and questionability. After all, it was based off a lesser and somewhat inconsequential novel by Dave Eggers, whose own evocative prose styling was the sole reason to experience it on the page. It didn’t boost confidence that most of the book’s most compelling virtues were precisely the sort of nuances that get cut in a cinematic adaptation. On that proverbial other hand, Tykwer isn’t exactly a filmmaker who travels traditional Hollywood pathways when adapting challenging works; he found the odd and distinctive hearts of both David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas (which he co-directed with the Wachowskis) and Patrick Suskind’s Perfume. Perhaps then, it isn’t surprising that Hologram ends up somewhere in the middle of what we would expect; instead of trying to overcome its slight,...

The classic Christmas tale of the Nutcracker is coming to the big screen again.
This time around—Walt Disney Pictures is set to adapt The Nutcracker And The Four Realms into a live-action movie with Lass Hallstrom in the director’s chair.
Hallstrom has a good resume with The Hundred-foot Journey, Salmon Fishing In The Yemen, Dear John, and Casanova.
The classic ballet story by E.T.A. Hoffman follows a young girl who was given a nutcracker as a Christmas present. The nutcracker came to life as he takes the young girl into a faraway land to battle the evil Mouse King.
Ashleigh Powell is currently writing the script.
