FlashForward was a TV show that was ahead of its time in many ways. The series premiered in 2009 and was based on a novel of the same name by Robert J. Sawyer. Joseph Fiennes, Courtney B. Vance, Sonya Walger, and John Cho all played leading characters. However, despite having an enthusiastic fan base, the show was cancelled after just one season and this was mostly as a result of poor ratings. One of the reasons why FlashForward was ahead of its time was its focus on science fiction and time travel with very few shows doing that at the same...

DJ Nash’s drama series A Million Little Things ended the way it started, with the death by suicide of one of the friends whose close relationship was at the heart of the show. While Jon’s suicide in the pilot came as a shock to everyone, Gary’s (James Roday Rodriguez) passing in tonight’s series closer had been set up, with the final season building toward it as Gary battled terminal Stage IV lung cancer.
The finale revealed that Gary had made a pact with Rome and Eddie for them to help him die “with dignity” if the pain became unbearable. We have to go back, /Film readers! Back to the Island filled with research stations, smoke monsters, birds that shout "Hurley!," eerie whispers, and mystical electromagnetic fields that heal paralysis. Although "Lost" premiered almost two decades ago, it left a lasting impact on television -- inspiring a plethora of mystery shows, including everything from ABC's "Flashforward" and Epix's "From." The ABC show fueled the audience's appetite for serialized and mystery-forward storytelling. Additionally, "Lost" launched the careers of many people involved -- not least of all "Watchmen" showrunner Damon Lindelof.
Looking back at "Lost," it's incredible to track where the show began and how its twists forever altered characters' fates. While the series occasionally meandered -- frustrating viewers with more questions than answers -- its characters were the show's beating heart. Let's take a trip down memory lane to revisit some old friends. Crank Petula Clark's "Downtown," climb on...

Writer-director David S. Goyer is certainly no stranger to translating beloved, larger-than-life properties to life on screen, from the superheroic (including Marvel’s “Blade” franchise and DC’s “Dark Knight” trilogy) to science fiction (“Terminator: Dark Fate” and “FlashForward”) to supernaturally mythic tales (the forthcoming “Sandman” streaming series).
But Goyer had yet to face a task as challenging as unifying the epic, thousand-year vision embodying sci-fi novelist Isaac Asimov’s “Foundation” series, which spans across seven books collecting stories written over the course of five decades. “Foundation” has long been considered a seminal example of 20th Century science fiction, quintessential in its allegorical approach — and, for decades in the view of always-ip-hungry Hollywood, next to impossible to adapt for film or television.
As a near-lifelong fan, Goyer remained undaunted, teaming with Apple TV Plus to build a story framework and character arcs that would unify Asimov’s far-flung saga (ultimately...

The past year in lockdown may make the idea of a comedy about being stuck in an endlessly repeating loop feel a little too close to home, but Palm Springs starring Andy Samburg and Cristin Milioti, which arrives on Friday the 9th of April, is fresh and funny and well worth your time. For something more serious and very well regarded, there’s Sound of Metal on Monday the 12th, starring Riz Ahmed as a heavy metal drummer losing his hearing. And if lockdown’s simply been too much fun and you need bringing back down to earth with a bleak tale of German teenage drug addiction, there’s We Children from Bahnhof Zoo.

October is here, which means it’s the time of the season for getting scared. With Halloween gradually becoming a month-long celebration over the past few years — even if the coronavirus has put a damper on many activities such as trick-or-treating — one thing we can always look forward to during these 31 days is a deluge of horror movies old and new, whether via streaming, cable network marathons or even fleeting theatrical releases.
Horror is already a reliable genre both at the box office (under normal circumstances) and in the digital space, so it’s no surprise that even in these compromised times, scary movies are coming at us hard and fast in October. Below is a round-up of fresh horror releases arriving either at your local multiplex (and we urge you to keep the risks of going to the theater in mind) or right in your living room. He’ll attempt to reconnect with his children, navigate clashes with his conservative family, and find unexpected common ground with his new partner Micki (Lindsey Morgan), (one of the first women in Texas Rangers’ history), while growing increasingly suspicious about the circumstances surrounding his wife’s death.

Star Trek's John Cho delves into supernatural horror for the first time with this reboot of the Japanese/American franchise.
The Grudge is one of the strangest franchises in horror film history: the series encompasses nine Japanese films (starting with the original direct-to-video Ju-On back in 2000) and now four American ones. The newest, simply titled The Grudge, is the 13th overall and deals like the others with the central premise of the entire series: if someone dies in a rage, that rage lingers as a kind of supernatural virus that can infect and destroy anyone who comes in contact with it.
A sort of reboot/sequel, The Grudge is directed and written by Nicolas Pesce, who has created a buzz on the horror scene with his first two features, The Eyes of My Mother (2016) and Piercing (2018). Pesce’s take on The Grudge is the first of...

Exclusive: Oscar-winning Spotlight producer Blye Faust and Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning producer Cori Shepherd Stern have acquired the exclusive rights to Beltway strategist Riva Levinson’s life story for a TV series. The duo have teamed with former The Rook showrunners Karyn Usher and Lisa Zwerling to develop the series at Universal Television, where Zwerling and Usher are under a deal. Hulu is adapting Clive Barker’s story collection, Books of Blood, as a movie, adding Star Trek director Brannon Braga and a stacked cast.
Books of Blood, the 1984-1985 six-volume short story collection that first brought maestro of macabre Clive Barker to prominence, is getting a feature film treatment. However, don’t expect to find said film at theaters, VOD, or, for that matter, even Netflix. – It’s coming to Hulu!
Brannon Braga, the veteran writer and producer of the Star Trek franchise, will be the driving force behind Hulu’s Books of Blood in a move that will certainly delight Trekkies… well, the ones who can appreciate hellishly twisted creatures and ambulatory flayed people. The project will be the feature directorial debut for Braga, who’s also serving as executive producer, set to co-write with Adam Simon, who worked with him on Wgn America series Salem.

When it comes to the brutal Emmy battles, there’s clearly one show that rules them all. HBO’s “Game of Thrones” dominated the competition, amassing a record-breaking 32 nominations including Best Drama Series. Gold Derby recently spoke with several of its contenders, including stars Alfie Allen, Gwendoline Christie and Carice van Houten, composer Ramin Djawadi, sound designer Paula Fairfield and visual effects supervisor Mohsen Mousavi. Scroll down and click on any name below to be taken to their full interview.
The first-time bids for Allen, Christie and van Houten were especially sweet considering all three actors submitted themselves on the Emmy ballot. But they were still surprising, even to the stars themselves. “I wasn’t expecting it because all of that had just faded into ridiculousness that that would even happen,” admits Allen, who competes in Best Drama Supporting Actor for playing wounded warrior Theon Greyjoy. “It wasn’t like...

“Game of Thrones” has been snubbed for its iconic music six of eight times at the Emmys, but it need not worry about missing another nomination, because the TV academy just revised its rules to favor titans like “Game of Thrones” in the music categories.
SEEfurther details about the infamous “Game of Thrones” score snubs
The rules stipulated until this year that each musician who entered for consideration would have to judge up to 10 hours of submissions from other music categories. The contenders with the best average ratings became the nominees. This leveled the playing field for shows without the visibility of “Game of Thrones,” but the Emmys are abandoning this process in favor of the simpler one that decides the nominees in most other categories, in which all members of the relevant branch of the academy vote directly for the nominees by selecting their favorites in each category without having to watch anything.

To hear “The Rook” tell it. the reasons why Stephenie Meyer walked away from her own Starz show is much simpler than how Olivia Munn stays healthy.
Speaking at a TCA panel Tuesday afternoon, “The Rook” executive producer Stephen Garrett said Meyer — who was hired as showrunner, before exiting early in production — parted with the show “amicably.” He said Meyer, who adapted Daniel O’Malley’s 2012 novel, had a “different take” than what the other producers decided to pursue. This led to, as you might imagine, a departure over “creative differences.”
“It really wasn’t a hideous process,” Garrett said. Current showrunners are Liza Zwerling (“FlashForward”) and Karyn Usher (“Prison Break”).
“The Rook” tells the story of Myfanwy Thomas (Emma Greenwell), a woman who wakes up in the rain beside London’s Millennium Bridge with no memory of who she is and no explanation for the circle of latex-gloved dead bodies splayed around her.

Miami — Btf Media, producer of breakout series “Hasta Que te Conocí” and “El Secreto de Selena,” is teaming with Vince Gerardis, a co-executive producer with George Martin on “Game of Thrones,” on a six-project co-production alliance.
Spearheaded at Btf Media by founder-partner Ricardo Coeto, the agreement takes in the development and co-production of the exclusive projects which the partners describe as having a “Latin-facing content.”
“This will be the beginning of a great relationship between Gerardis and Btf. We are very happy to announce this new venture for six titles, said Coeto who runs Btf Media with fellow founder Francisco Cordero.
Made public at Natpe 2019 on Tuesday evening, the announcement looks set to open the door for Btf Media and Gerardis to explore the creation of series turning around Latino figures, American or Latin American, but benefiting on occasions a large input from literary sources.

Master magician Ricky Jay, whose decades-long career included guest roles on Deadwood and The Simpsons, has died at the age of 70.
The news was confirmed by his manager, Winston Simone, who told Variety that his client died of natural causes. “He was one of a kind,” Simone said. “We will never see the likes of him again.”
A New Yorker profile once referred to Jay as “perhaps the most gifted sleight-of-hand artist alive.” His one-man Broadway show, Ricky Jay and His 52 Assistants, was filmed for HBO by acclaimed director David Mamet in 1996. He appeared in many of Mamet’s films,...

Ricky Jay, a magician and character actor known for his roles in such films as “Boogie Nights,” “Magnolia,” “Tomorrow Never Dies” and “The Spanish Prisoner,” has died. He was 72.
“I am sorry to share that my remarkable friend, teacher, collaborator and coconspirator is gone,” tweeted Michael Weber, Jay’s partner in the Deceptive Practices consulting firm, which advises movie, TV and theater projects on various illusions and magic secrets during their productions. Among the films they consulted on were “The Prestige,” “The Illusionist” and “Oceans Thirteen.”
He was also credited as “Illusion Wheelchair Designer” for “Forrest Gump” — it was Jay and CGI specialists who made it appear as if Gary Sinise’s wheelchair-bond character Lt. Dan was a double-amputee.

The title of writer/director Nathan Leon's feature film debut Prodigy refers to the boy at the centre of the story who is believed to have the answers to an episode of mass unconsciousness which may be the first of three events leading to the apocalypse.
The movie, however, seems to be much more focused on the boy's father Jericho ("Z Nation" star Tyler Roy Roberts) who is called upon to keep his son safe on his journey to a location which is supposed to enable him to see the other major events coming and, I figure, help save the world.
The synopsis sounded interesting but I must admit I was a bit disappointed by how much this seems to be channelling Midnight Special and, to a lesser extent, "Flashforward," but I'm hoping Leon is able to infuse someth...

This review comes with a letter grade attached, but there’s a caveat: A show like Manifest really can only be graded an “incomplete.” NBC’s shiny new drama — debuting on Monday, Sept. 24 at 10/9c — has an undeniably cool sci-fi premise… but we’ve been burned by those before, haven’t we? The Event, FlashForward… ever since Lost, TV’s batting average with high-concept dramas like this has been pretty dismal. Since NBC only sent out the pilot episode for review, we have no way of knowing if this show will actually fulfill its early promise — but the first hour...
