The series finale of Ncuti Gatwa’s debut series of Doctor Who will be shown in cinemas around the UK, here are the details.
Doctor Who being streamed to cinemas is a relatively recent phenomenon, discounting Dr Who And The Daleks and Daleks: 2150 Ad, the Peter Cushing films made for cinema release in 1965 and 1966. 50th anniversary special Day Of The Doctor was beamed to cinemas in 2013, as was Peter Capaldi’s debut episode Deep Breath in 2014. Now? There’s more!
The BBC has announced that Empire Of Light, the finale of this year’s series of Doctor Who, will be streamed to cinemas, along with preceding episode The Legend Of Ruby Sunday, courtesy of CinemaLive.
Showrunner Russell T Davies previously teased the finale of season one by saying “this is a great big rip-roaring finale with the Doctor, Ruby and friends old and new fighting the greatest enemy of their lives.

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have, in less than 15 years, established themselves as the most exciting composers working in contemporary film.
Their first score was David Fincher’s masterpiece “The Social Network.” The score was a haunting, atmospheric triumph, and it won them Oscars, an even more impressive feat given the Academy’s historic anti-rock band bias. And what began as an exclusive collaboration with Fincher soon blossomed outward – they have worked with Pixar and Ken Burns, scored a prestige TV version of Alan Moore’s “Watchmen,” and an animated “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” movie. They can do it all, while remaining uniquely them.
They are unstoppable, too. This week “Challengers,” from Luca Guadagnino, is released alongside their soundtrack album. And they have a pair of scores still coming this year – for the big-budget Apple movie “The Gorge” and for Guadagnino’s “Queer,” starring Daniel Craig.

The last couple Reznor-Ross soundtracks weren’t hitting as hard: on The Killer they ceded ground to Morrissey, replacing their multi-tone soundscapes for atmospherics; Bones and All found them exploring some more pastoral tones to admirable, if limited ends; Empire of Light, what can you say. There’s a special joy, then, listening to their work for Challengers, which our review was indeed correct in calling “their most inspired work in some time”––it suggests those bouncier, more aggressive bits from The Social Network becoming an entire album unto themselves.
There’s also “Compress / Repress,” a track the duo wrote with Luca Guadagnino and which finds Reznor making a rare vocal appearance. It’s been, somehow, six years since a non-instrumental Nine Inch Nails album; this writer hopes it sparks something of the frontman’s old habits.

Olivia Colman’s impressive range as an actress seems to know no bounds. A favorite in the UK for her television work in such sitcoms as “The Office” and “Fleabag,” TV audiences also lauded her for her dramatic performances in “Broadchurch” and “The Night Manager,” as well as more recently with “The Crown” and “Landscapers.” But it has been her estimable work in films that continues to bring her international renown.
With such acclaim from audiences, it was inevitable that awards would begin coming her way. She took home the Oscar for Best Actress for “The Favourite” (2018) and scored an additional Best Supporting Actress nomination for “The Father” (2020). For her work in television, Colman has received four Emmy bids, winning for “The Crown.” She also claimed Golden Globe statues for both TV (“The Night Manager” and “The Crown”) and film (“The Favourite”). Searchlight Pictures has signed a first-look deal with Olivia Colman and Ed Sinclair’s South of the River Pictures. Ari Aster has assembled an all-star cast for his next film, “Eddington,” recruiting Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, Austin Butler, Pedro Pascal, Luke Grimes, Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward and Clifton Collins Jr.
A24 is financing and producing the movie, which — based on Aster’s track record — we can only assume will give us nightmares. Plot details are kept under wraps besides the fact that the film “follows a small-town New Mexico sheriff with higher aspirations.”
“Eddington” starts production this week, with Aster writing, directing and producing alongside Lars Knudsen under their Square Peg banner. Two-time Academy Award nominee Darius Khondji is the director of photography.
“Eddington” marks the sixth collaboration between Square Peg and A24, which produced and distributed Aster’s previous three films — “Hereditary,” “Midsommar” and “Beau Is Afraid” — as well as “Dream Scenario” and the upcoming “Death of a Unicorn.”

“Oppenheimer” lenser Hoyte van Hoytema took top honors from the American Society of Cinematographers on Sunday. He edged out all four of his Oscar rivals for Best Cinematography: Edward Lachman (“El Conde”), Matthew Libatique (“Maestro”), Rodrigo Prieto (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) and Robbie Ryan (“Poor Things”).
Over its 38-year history, the ASC has predicted 152 of the 190 Oscar nominees, including four in 2019, 2020 and 2021 and all five this year and in both 2018 and 2017. Last year, it previewed three of the Best Cinematography contenders — Roger Deakins (“Empire of Light”), Darius Khondji (“Bardo”) and Mandy Walker (“Elvis”). While Walker won over the ASC, she lost the Oscar to “All Quiet on the Western Front” lenser James Friend.
Indeed, the ASC choice for the best in the business has presaged the eventual winner at the Oscars only 17 times:
Dean Semler, “Dances with Wolves” (1991)
John Toll, “Braveheart” (1996)
John Seale, “The English Patient” (1997)
Russell Carpenter, “Titanic” (1998)

If you told me there was a plan in place to make four Beatles biopics — one each about John, Paul, George, and Ringo — and that they were going to be directed by Richard Linklater, I’d be suffused with curiosity and excitement. If you told me that those same four movies were going to be directed by Martin Scorsese, I’d be suffused with curiosity and excitement. If you told me that a quartet of Beatles biopics were going to be directed (one apiece) by Linklater, Scorsese, Greta Gerwig, and Todd Haynes, I’d be suffused with curiosity and excitement — and, in fact, that last option would make a beautiful kind of sense. When you think about it, why would anyone — even Scorsese, the poet of rock-operatic drama — want to direct all four Beatles biopics? Talk about hogging the spoils.

“American Beauty” Oscar winner and “Skyfall” director Sam Mendes is taking on the most ambitious project of his career thus far. The “1917” filmmaker is setting up a quartet of Beatles biopics with Sony Pictures Entertainment, Deadline first reported.
The project will feature four theatrically released films, with one told from each member of the Fab Four’s point of view. It will be the first time the Beatles’ company, Apple Corps Ltd., and the members of the Beatles or their estates have granted full life and music rights for a scripted film, according to Deadline.
Mendes will direct all four interconnected films, which are slated for a 2027 release. Writers are in the process of being hired, and a release schedule will be announced at a later date. Mendes will produce through his Neal Street Productions banner alongside his partner Pippa Harris and Julie Pastor. Jeff Jones will executive produce for Apple Corps Ltd.

Spend on UK film and high-end TV slid sharply to £4.23B ($5.3B) in the strike-hit 2023, according to the BFI’s latest annual stats.
The figure was 35% down on a record 2022, the BFI said, while floating the silver lining of £4.3B being nearly level with 2019’s pre-Covid spend. There were other green shoots such as a small rise in cinema admissions.
It will come as little surprise that the figures fell so starkly given that the latter half of the year saw film and high-end TV production severely dented due to the writers and actors strikes across the pond.
Film production in the UK fell to £1.36B in 2023 spend, a 31% drop on 2022’s figure, while high-end TV was down by the larger 38% to £2.9B. As with the past few years, high-end TV made up the brunt of overall production spend at around two-thirds.

Signature Entertainment has acquired the U.K. and Irish rights to “Unicorns,” the romance drama co-directed by BAFTA nominee Sally El Hosaini (“The Swimmers”) and her long-standing collaborator James Krishna Floyd, who starred in both “The Swimmers” and her directorial debut “My Brother the Devil.”
From a script written by Floyd, “Unicorns” is described as a “visually daring and heartfelt portrayal of modern masculinity” and follows a queer South Asian club performer living a double life who meets a straight, single-father mechanic, with whom unexpected sparks begin to fly. The film stars Ben Hardy (“Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Love at First Sight”), newcomer Jason Patel, Nisha Nayar (“Buddha of Suburbia”), Hannah Onslow (“Empire of Light”) and Sagar Radia (“Industry”).

Soon after “Saltburn” debuted on Amazon Prime, it joined the 1 million watch club on Letterboxd (the leading social media app for film lovers) and was one of the fastest to do so this year. The film has completely taken over social media due to its provocative, erotic sensibilities. “Transfixing and hypnotic, writer/director Emerald Fennell has crafted a provocative and diabolical masterpiece”, writes Awards Daily. Despite being nearly a month since its release, “Saltburn” remains in the top 3 most watched programs on the platform, film or television, in both the UK and US.
“Saltburn” reaped five bids at the Critics’ Choice Awards including Best Picture. Lead Barry Keoghan and scene-stealer Rosamund Pike contended at the Globes. Fennell’s sophomore feature merited 11 longlist mentions at BAFTA.

Disney and Tsg Entertainment Finance have settled litigation from August of 2023 when the financier sued the media giant for “rampant self-dealing” and breach of the parties’ revenue participation contract.
“The matter has been resolved,” said a Disney spokesperson.
Tsg said it has financed more than 140 films to the tune of $3.3 billion over the years with Fox, which Disney acquired in 2019, including Avatar: The Way of Water, Bohemian Rhapsody, Deadpool, Deadpool 2, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Logan, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, The Martian, The Grand Budapest Hotel, JoJo Rabbit, The Banshees of Inisherin, Hidden Figures, The Shape of Water and Empire of Light.
Tsg’s lawsuit filed last August in Los Angeles District Court said that Fox had promised Tsg a share of defined gross receipts for pictures under the companies’ long-term participation agreement but that the studio used “nearly every trick in the Hollywood accounting book” to not pay.

The American Society of Cinematographers nominees announced on January 11 include only four of our five leading Oscar contenders for Best Cinematography: frontrunner Hoyte van Hoytema for “Oppenheimer”plus Matthew Libatique (“Maestro”), Rodrigo Prieto (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) and Robbie Ryan (“Poor Things”). Our other predicted nominee, Łukasz Zal (“The Zone of Interest”), got bumped by Edward Lachman (“El Conde”).
Over its 37-year history, the ASC has predicted 147 of the 185 Oscar nominees, including four in 2019, 2020 and 2021 and all five in both 2018 and 2017.

The holidays were dominated by two movie musicals — “Wonka” and “The Color Purple” — and just two weeks into January, we get a third one. “Mean Girls” is likely to not only be the biggest movie of the extended MLK Jr. weekend, but of the entire month. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
Twenty years after Tina Fey‘s influential comedy “Mean Girls” introduced the world to the elitist high school clique known as the Plastics, with a cast that included Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Lizzy Caplan and Amanda Seyfried, “Mean Girls” returns to theaters, this time as a musical transposed from a successful run on Broadway.

At the British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs) on Dec. 3, Andrew Haigh‘s “All of Us Strangers” domainted, winning seven races including Picture, Director, and Screenplay. Meanwhile, Mia McKenna-Bruce won Best Lead Performance for “How to Have Sex” while her co-star, Shaun Thomas, tied for Best Supporting Performance along with “All of Us Strangers” scene stealer Paul Mescal. But what do these little independent awards mean for the larger awards season? Let’s take a look.
Firstly, “All of Us Strangers” had a great night. The fantasy film also won Music Supervision, Cinematographer, and Editing. This overwhelming response from British voters could indicate that the same will happen at the BAFTAs. “All of Us Strangers” could be in line for nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor for Mescal, and Best Actor for Andrew Scott. There are some big names, of course, that these creatives will...

Welcome to Deadline’s International Disruptors, a feature where we’ll shine a spotlight on key executives and companies outside of the U.S. shaking up the offshore marketplace. This week, we’re talking visual effects powerhouse Union VFX, an independent outfit based in London and, more recently, Montréal, which has spent the last 15 years quietly building a reputation for delivering some of the most seamless and invisible visual effects across the film and television spheres. We sit down with three of their heads to talk about how the business has grown, why it’s important to involve VFX teams at early stages and what’s next for the company.
The best visual effects are the ones that you don’t notice, the ones that blend seamlessly into the storyline and bring the audience deeper into the world of the storyteller. For instance, if you tuned into Amazon Prime Video...

Last year, as movies conceived and shot during the Covid-19 pandemic began to be released, we saw a sudden influx of films rejoicing in the act of moviemaking and movie-watching. From Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans” to Damien Chazelle’s “Babylon,” from Sam Mendes’ “Empire of Light” to the Indian Oscar entry “Last Film Show,” a surprising number of films bred during pandemic isolation were movies about movies.
And a year later, during the final days of the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, another movie that belongs in that company had its world premiere. “The Movie Teller,” a Spanish-language film set in Chile and made by a Danish director with a cast whose biggest names are known for French and German movies, puts an international spin on the love of movies and embraces the art of storytelling in a way that is at times profoundly moving.

It’s still wild to think that we have Drake to thank for the revival of Top Boy, Ronan Bennett’s engrossing crime saga that draws to a close on September 7. Like so many of us, the Grammy-winning rapper got caught up in a show, only to find out it had been canceled — in this case, Channel 4 dropped Top Boy, which starred Ashley Walters and Kane Robinson, in 2014 after two four-episode seasons. But, unlike the vast majority of the TV-viewing public, Drake had the influence to set a revival in motion, bringing back many original cast members and drawing a slew of new talents like Micheal Ward and Simbiatu Ajikawo (aka Little Simz).

Paddington in Peru, the third film in the Paddington franchise, has added a newcomer to its cast. Oscar winner Olivia Colman is in talks to play a role in the StudioCanal feature about the beloved bear.
Ben Whishaw has long voiced the titular bear, who in past films was seen getting into adventures with the Brown family. Exact plot details are being kept under wraps but the movie will see Paddington travel from his home in London to his native home of “darkest Peru.”
Sources note that Colman’s character will run a retirement home for bears in Peru. (Fans of the Paddington franchise will remember that Paddington’s Aunt Lucy lives in The Home for Retired Bears.)
Paddington in Peru will be the feature debut of Dougal Wilson, the award-winning commercial and music video director. Heyday and StudioCanal are producing the feature. Filming will be done on location in London and Peru.

It was only a matter of time before “Black Mirror” came for the streaming industry, and Season 6 takes a couple of swings directly at Netflix right out of the gate. First with the star-studded, hyper-meta episode “Joan Is Awful,” which introduces the Netflix clone Streamberry (and an arsenal of Easter eggs and references therein). But Episode 2, “Loch Henry,” quiets things down to tackle a much more specific streaming ill — the soulless, exploitative true crime industrial complex and the constant stream of true crime docs digging up traumas from the past.
“Loch Henry” follows an aspiring filmmaker back to his Scottish hometown, where he intends to make a documentary about eggs, only to get sucked into making a film about the horrific crime case that transformed his hometown from a former tourist destination into a desolate ghost town. In “Black Mirror” tradition, the ensemble is a healthy mix of familiar faces,...

The invigorating hype track about the "heroes in a half-shell" was composed by Dennis C. Brown and Chuck Lorre. James Mandell, who provided the vocals, told Dish Nation that he was a session singer in the 1980s and one day he "got a call to come in and sing a tune with a 'wacky' lyric."
Now, Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor (also known for his wacky lyrics) and his longtime collaborator, Atticus Ross, are bringing their musical talents to the underworld of the Turtles. The news was let slip by professional skateboarder Tony Hawk, who recently visited Reznor to shoot a music video cameo appearance for a cover of Nine Inch Nails' "Wish.

Goodbye HBO Max, hello Max. Warner Bros. Discovery announced several weeks back that the company was dropping the "HBO" from the name of its flagship streaming service, and that day has come. What does that mean for you, the subscriber? For one, it means a lot more movies and TV shows will be streaming in 4K, and the list of initial titles is pretty impressive. There are, however, a few caveats.
Those who wish to watch movies like "2001: A Space Odyssey" and "Argo" in Ultra HD will need to be subscribed to the new tier offered by Max called "Ultimate Ad-Free." This goes for $19.99 per month and includes access to the service's library of 4K movies and TV shows. There is also a plan with ads for $9.99 per month and a regular ad-free plan for $15.99 per month. Sudheer Sirivara, Global Technology Platform for Warner Bros. Discovery, had this to...

HBO Max is dead. Long live Max.
The new combined streaming service launched on Tuesday, and in addition to housing all of HBO Max and Discovery+’s content in one place, Max also plays host to a robust library of movies and TV shows streaming in 4K Uhd. At launch, more than 1,000 hours of programming are available in 4K, and Max says more will be added in the coming months.
Right now, you can stream all the “Harry Potter” movies, the “Lord of the Rings” and “Hobbit” trilogies, the “Dark Knight” trilogy, the “Matrix” films, “Dune,” “Joker” and even “The Wizard of Oz” and “Goodfellas” in 4K. Additionally, acclaimed (and cinematic) HBO series like “House of the Dragon,” “Barry” and “Succession” are also streaming in 4K, with additional shows (and seasons) to come.
Plus, all Warner Bros. movies released this year and going forward will be streaming in 4K Uhd...

The 4K library will include “The Last of Us,” “Game of Thrones,” “The House of the Dragon,” the Harry Potter films, “Dune,” The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Dark Knight trilogy, and more. Strangely, the list includes “Superman,” but not the beloved “Superman II.” You can stream “It: Chapter Two” in 4K, but not the original. Only half of “Barry” is available in 4K. The company reports it plans to add more 4K titles each month.

Conventional 2022 global box office chart does not tell the whole story.
Avatar and Top Gun sequels may have ruled 2022 global box office but the top hits for the Generation Z and over-55 crowds were After Ever Happy and Mrs. Harris Goes To Paris.
New viewership research by data analytics and campaign management company Movio collated from more than 50 countries and unveiled at CinemaCon on Monday presented a different perspective on the most popular theatrical releases of last year – and a timely one given that Hollywood is chasing younger and older crowds.
