Joseph Bell was the name of a surgeon who lectured at the University of Edinburgh medical school in the late 1800s. Arthur Conan Doyle studied under him and acted as his clerk. Bell's ability to diagnose patients before they even sat down inspired Doyle to create Sherlock Holmes.
