Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings

Warning: Spoilers
Doug Harlocker takes us through his prop warehouse where a lot of the elements from Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull were created and stored.

These include: Spalko's decorative sword case, the letter that Mutt receives from his mother (copies already available on Ebay), books from Indy's library personally chosen by Spielberg. Rubber shovels, spades tree trunks for the fight scenes and the armor of Orellana and his men which was created in New Zealand at Weta Workshop. Some props from previous adventures were culled from the Lucasfilm archive, including of course the Ark of the Covenant and several of Indy's whips and 'man-bags', though the latter two were recreated and then aged nonetheless.

The stick that Oxley carries around was actually based on an Indian instrument one of John Hurt's friends received as a gift from a dignitary. Harlocker's team looked all over for another one but eventually ended up making their own out of bamboo. Mutt's two props were a 1950's Italian switchblade and a comb based on the period comb George Lucas carries around. Say what you will about Georgie-Peorgie, but he sure has a magnificent head of hair, so Shia had better take the Maker's combing etiquette tips seriously.

This documentary also gives us a look at a hard to spot in-joke/easter egg/movie connection hidden amongst the broken boxes in the Hanger 51 sequence: the staff of Moses from The Ten Commandments (1956). During the making of the film, Lucasarts was already hard at work on the new Indy game 'Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings' (set in 1939) and by the looks of things, it seems that if you play the game right, Indy finds his price, only to have it end up in the government hangar. Either that or they grabbed it out of Chuck Heston's hands a year before Crystal Skull takes place.
