A Memphantastic glimpse into hipster scene musical beds.
alo_wishs6 May 2009
Directed at the core audience of Midtown Memphis scenesters, this collection of 15 shorts delves into the lives of real musicians and their semi-real lives. The dramatic themes play out to wider appeal, as most anybody can relate to the happy-go-lucky ideology of sex, drugs, and rock-and-roll. The best part about this "film biopic" is the variety of interspersed musical interludes. For each 7-minute episode, there may be about 3 minutes devoted solely to musical performance. None of these sections seem forced or disjointed, but they all work well into the story, and even help to develop the characters. Being a native Memphian and friends with several of the cast, I have an inherent bias, of course. But, I feel if this movie were made in Austin,TX, or Athens,GA, and I didn't know anybody, I could still relate to the struggles of trying to find love and self-identity in the context of a burgeoning local music scene.
