Shovels & Rope, the musically adventurous husband-and-wife duo of Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst, had plans to follow up 2019’s raucous By Blood with a simple, quiet, bare-bones album. But that idea went out the window when the pandemic hit and afforded them a rare opportunity to explore and experiment in their home studio.
“We’ve been going so hard for the past 10 years,” Trent tells Rolling Stone during a joint interview with Hearst. “You have to stay on the road to make living in the business, and we didn...

Big Brother has been filled with drama since its inception 20 years ago.
Several people have won the grand prize, and while some may not have deserved it, they managed to scheme their way to the top spot.
With a second All-Stars season on the way, it's time to take a look back at some of the winners and where they are at today.
Eddie McGee (Season 1)
Big Brother was a very different game when it launched back in the year 2000.
McGee played a decent enough game and is the first-ever winner of the U.S. iteration.
In the years since his win, he has worked as an actor, with roles in The Human Race and God's Pocket.
Will Kirby (Season 2)
Will is one of the best players to ever enter the house. There's no doubt about that.
He subsequently returned to the game in Big Brother: All Stars, and finished in fourth place.

Beginning in the early 1960s, one of the main venues where audiences could watch underground films outside of New York City was the midnight movie screening series called Underground Cinema 12.
The origins of Underground Cinema 12 were related by one of its founders, Mike Getz, to the Alternative Projections historical project. Getz was the manager of the Cinema Theater in Hollywood, California when he was approached by John Fles, who had been holding alternative cinema screenings around Los Angeles, such as in the Jewish and Ukrainian cultural centers.
Fles had the idea to run a regular midnight movie screening series in an actual movie theater, which Getz quickly agreed to host. The Cinema Theater typically ran foreign films and independent cinema, so screening underground films at midnight seemed like a good match. Initially, the series was called Movies ‘Round Midnight and it premiered on Columbus Day 1963 with a screening of Jack Smith‘s Flaming Creatures,...

What’s old is new again. Or at least prime for a reboot of some sort. Playbill.com is reporting that Family Ties, the sitcom that turned Michael J. Fox into a household name, is being turned into a stage play. Araca Group, the production company behind such well known plays as Wicked and Book of Mormon, will lead the project. They’ve already signed on Kleban Award winner Daniel Goldstein to write the script. The Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning sitcom, which ran on NBC from 1982-89, centers on former hippies (Michael Gross, Meredith Baxter) and their experiences raising their family in suburbia. Fox played their son Alex, a young Republican. Justine Batemen and Tina Yothers were cast as the two daughters. Later in the show’s run, the family had another child, Andrew (Brian Bonsall). “Family Ties is a timeless comedy featuring a close-knit American family with vastly differing interests and politics,...

“Kill or Be Killed” (2015) aka “Red on Yella, Kill a Fella,” is a low budget horror-western released on DVD by Rlj Entertainment that also attempts to be a tribute to the spaghetti westerns of the 60s and 70s and Sam Peckinpah’s “The Wild Bunch.” The plot is about a gang of outlaws in the year 1900 traveling 500 miles through Texas to get to a stash of gold that’s hidden at the bottom of a well in the sand dunes of Galveston Beach. The group is hounded on their journey by a mysterious being and one by one the gang members get picked off.
Like Peckinpah’s Wild Bunch these outlaws are a motley crew. Their leader, Claude “Sweet Tooth” Barbee, played by co-writer/director Justin Meeks, is very loosely based on real-life outlaw Sam Bass. As Meeks portrays him, Barbee is a man obsessed with...

The new Planet of the Apes series has been an interesting ride thus far, breaking new ground and breathing new life into a rather stale franchise (no offense, Mark Wahlberg.)
The story grows increasingly epic; the first movie saw our protagonist Caesar evolve from mere ape to leader and liberator of his kind, while the sequel had him battling to keep his vision for the apes’ future alive amid escalating turmoil.
The human race, meanwhile is… struggling. After experimenting with a cure for Alzheimer’s disease, they give birth to the simian flu, which both creates super-smart apes and decimates the world’s human population by the beginning of the second movie.
Now, with the apes and humans firmly set on their decidedly opposite paths, it’s time to close this out with a bang.
There are a thousand ways it can all go down, but it...

The human race has been busy, adapting alien technology and generally getting ready for any potential future attacks. Now we have our first look at one of the things the human race has been up to. The human race still hasn’t mastered the art of separating sex from violence. Our cinematic experiences are direct reflection of that. In our moviegoing adventures, we expect to see a healthy combination of both or so help us, we will walk back to the ticket booth and demand a refund. (Or at least a nipple, just as a sign of good faith.)
We want butts and explosions, though not necessarily in that order. It’s how action movie fans are wired. So when we see both happening on screen at the same time, the synapses in our brain start firing at an incredible rate and we become very happy people.
Surprisingly, it’s a rare thing to see these two things combine in the same scene. Sure, sometimes violence leads to sex, and vice verse, but the overlap is pretty minimal.

The human race is obsessed with what happens when we die, depending on your beliefs there is heaven or hell, an afterlife or even just nothing. AfterDeath raises a few questions of where we go, and raises some thought-provoking issues about the process of moving on… When five people find themselves trapped in an abandoned beach house they soon realise they are dead. With “limbo” slowly closing in on them and a demonic shadow attacking them based on their sins, where are they bound? Heaven or Hell?
AfterDeath doesn’t push religion on you and in a way this may be a weakness. For the most part though, the characters are pretty much clued in on the fact that they are dead and will either be going to heaven or hell.

Doctor Who serves up its most unusual episode in quite some time this Saturday night, a blend of wild fantasy and comic farce.
But 'The Girl Who Died' has a dark sting in its tail. No spoilers, but here are ten hints at what to expect.
1. The Doctor steps in - or rather on - something nasty.
2. "I'm not in the mood for Vikings."
3. Clara insults the Doctor.
4. "You fight, or you die."
5. Capaldi gets to quote the Third Doctor - and the Seventh.
6. "The human race - you're obsessed."
7. An old talent of the Doctor's re-emerges.
8. "You never tell me the rules."
9. We hear a famous theme tune - and not Doctor Who's.
10. "That. Is. Rubbish."
Doctor Who continues this Saturday (October 17) at 8.20pm on BBC One

There are some things that you just know not to do. You know that it’s wrong to kick an elderly person’s walking stick as they go by, driving over the speeding limit will most definitely get you a ticket or a fine, and it doesn’t take a genius to know that you shouldn’t ever take someone else’s life without expecting to get into a lot of trouble.
But when it comes down to it, there is a certain element of morality that guides you on your way through life and dictates your behaviour and actions. So whilst it may be acceptable to steal a loaf of bread to feed your starving family, it’s never going to be okay to shoot yourself in the foot to get sympathy from your ex girlfriend. People can accept the first but not the latter, even though they’re both,...

As Interstellar arrives in cinemas, James salutes those films that take us, well, somewhere else...
(Note: this article discusses the ending of Gravity and 2001: A Space Odyssey and it will also hurl you into the void of outer space. Don't panic, and remember: "In space no one can hear you scream".)
We're going Interstellar. Finally, one of the most-eagerly awaited films of the year has landed in cinemas to pick us up and take us beyond the stratosphere and out of Earth's orbit. Interstellar will then, as the title suggests, propel us even further and push us beyond the outer reaches of the Solar System.
That's an exhilarating prospect but, putting the conceptual idea aside for a moment, Interstellar is exciting simply because it's a Christopher Nolan movie. For his first feature since The Dark Knight trilogy's finale he's assembled a cast of high-calibre stars (Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway,...

True Detective Creator Nic Pizzolatto Responds to Claims of Plagiarism Exactly Like Rust Cohle Would
True Detective was the breakout hit of the past TV season, but is some of the show's success due to plagiarism? Creator Nic Pizzolatto has been accused of plagiarizing both phrases and ideas from Thomas Ligotti's The Conspiracy Against The Human Race: A Contrivance of Horror, among others, but both HBO and the showrunner told E! News that no plagiarism ever took place. The network released a statement that is very complimentary and supportive of Pizzolatto's work. "True Detective is a work of exceptional originality and the story, plot, characters and dialogue are that of Nic Pizzolatto," HBO said. "Philosophical concepts are free for anyone to use, including writers of fiction,...

There is a fine line to be walked between homage and plagiarism, particularly in our current, pastiche-crazy culture. Filmmakers have been accused of lifting large sections of novels, plays, poetry, and other films to be cast pell-mell into their own works, prompting accusations of “hack” work as well as praise for these directors as post-modern pastiche artists. But what happens when whole sections of dialogue are lifted from other works and remain unattributed in a film or television show? Is that homage, plagiarism, or some nebulous category in between?
That’s the issue now facing the hit show True Detective and writer/creator Nic Pizzolatto. Pizzolatto is being accused of plagiarizing work by the horror writer Thomas Ligotti, among others, and using it in dialogue without attributing it. Conversation has begun between The Lovecraft E-zine‘s Mike Davis and Thomas Ligotti Online‘s founder Jon Padgett (via The Playlist), to...

Ah, what would we have to give to bring back “Mystery Science Theater 3000”? They would have a field day with the completely embarrassing “The Human Race,” an inept sci-fi film that seems like a throwback to incompetent straight-to-video cheapies of the 80's, the kind of time-wasters that would employ Robert Z'Dar and maybe an Estevez. The intro to this slab of tacky genre garbage is foggy, muddy, nearly monochrome, as the victims of the title event are forced to follow a single path to victory. Without warning, we see these strangers look to the sky, as an unseen voice transmits the rules of this “game” straight into their heads – you must get to the end of the path, or you will die. And if you're lapped twice, you are dead. Also, try not to walk onto the grass that surrounds this complex of an arbitrarily-chosen jail, school and home,...
