- At the West house, Cecile comes down to tea and Joe offers her tea. He says that he's digging into Kristen's background because she's replacing him as captain. Cecile has a former vet as a client, and he says that he served with Kristen but she doesn't have her service listed in her file.
Once Joe leaves to check out the lead, Cecile finds herself trapped in a mindscape, trapped in a white cell.
Caitlin finds Chester repainting his new workshop, that Cisco used to have. He offers to take his things that he moved in back to his garage, and Caitlin assures him that he doesn't have to. Caitlin tells Chester that they want him to feel at home. Chester admits that he's set up stealth audio speakers, turns them on, and dances to his music. He invites Caitlin to dance with him, but the base doesn't go up as he planned. The system shorts out, and Chester goes to get a spare cable from the Starchives.
Chester goes to the Starchives and finds a robot hand on the floor. He hears something and goes to investigate, and finds Barry and Iris. They claim that they were cataloguing, but Chester isn't fooled. Iris goes to take a fall, and Barry tells Chester that he and Iris are trying to have a child. Barry speeds off when he gets a text from Cecile asking him for help with a case.
Barry meets with Cecile, and he says that her case seems like human arson. He points out that she defended someone like the arsonist a few years ago, feels weak, and says that he can't see Cecile. The woman tells Barry that she's not Cecile, snaps her fingers, and Barry collapses in the real world and finds himself in a white cell with the real Cecile... who wonders if he's real.
The fake Cecile takes Barry to the medlab at Star Labs, and Caitlin and Chester examine him. The imposter claims that she doesn't know what happened to Barry, and Caitlin determines that Barry is locked into a coma. Chester suggests that Cecile her empathic powers on Barry's brain and sense if someone else's emotions are active in Barry's mind.
The imposter says that she can't sense Barry's emotion, but can sense someone else's madness, and a golden mask in the darkness of Barry's mind. Chester tells them that he knows whose is doing it, finds a photo of Psycho Pirate, Roger Hayden, in Cisco's photos of villains. Hayden claimed he got his powers from an ancient mask Iris confirms that Hayden no longer has the mask, and it was donated by the authorities to the Central City Museum. Chester does the research and learns that the mask is a psychic parasite moving from host to host, and feeding on Barry's super-speed brain.
Chester suggests that they use the psychic inhibitor, and Caitlin points out that they need the mask. The imposter wishes that they could steal the Mask from the museum, and Chester says that they should.
Barry questions Cecile, who says that the last thing she remembers was being at home when the Force Storm struck, and she woke up in the cell. Barry figures that whatever trapped them there took over Cecile's body, and realizes that his speed powers are gone. He figures that they're in a mindscape and the asylum is a memory.
The door open, and Barry figures they should find an escape. Cecile warns against it, and Barry admits that if they die in the mindscape they'll die in the real world. However, he insists that they have to get out and save the others.
Chester calls Sue for help and she arrives at Star Labs. Sue confirms from the blueprints that the Mask is locked up in a laser grid security system in the museum's restoration lab. However, the lab has a password that only the security guard knows. Chester suggests that the imposter use her empathic powers to get around the guard, and when the imposter hesitates Chester says that she's just as brave as the rest of them. She walks off to get a better costume, and Sue notes that Chester seems confident, and asks him if the heist seems too easy. Chester says that Team Flash makes it look easy and they've got it, apparently convincing Sue.
That night at the museum, Iris and Chester monitor the museum from the Star van. Sue breaks in and uses a smoke grenade to reveal the lasers. She then dances past the now-visible beams and gets to the lab door. The imposter drops in from the same vent that Sue used, and they go to find the security guard so Cecile can use her empathic powers on him to get him to open the door.
Barry and Cecile confirm that all the doors are locked, and Cecile suggests that they double back. When he hears a noise, Barry goes to investigate and finds a swirling portal. It disappears, revealing a woman crouched in the corner. Cecile, panicked, says that they should go. The woman turns, revealing that she's another version of Cecile, and puts Barry in a coma in the mindscape.
When the guard comes in, the imposter uses her powers to make him open the vault. Sue then tranqs him and goes into the vault.
Caitlin calls Iris and Chester, and tells them that she's detected a third mental pattern in Barry's mind. Iris realizes that Cecile isn't Cecile, and warns Sue. Putting on the mask, the imposter makes Sue tranq herself and then mentally torments Iris and Chester. She says that her new host will serve her for eternity and walks out of the lab.
Iris and Chester get Sue and take her back to the medbay. They explain that Cecile was possessed and the Mask spirit used the Force Storm as cover to link with Cecile. Chester suggests that they track Cecile's neurological signal, and figures that it's all on him because the Psycho Pirate played him. He admits that he doesn't know jack and walks off.
Barry wakes up back in the cell, and figures that Cecile knows where they are. She says that they're in St. Carmine's Psychiatric Hospital where she was a patient, collapses to her knees. Cecile tells Barry that she was working around the clock when her mother got sick, and when she got cancer, Cecile's mother told Cecile to keep working. Her mother died alone, and Cecile had a breakdown and ended up in the asylum. When she checked out, Cecile was so ashamed and afraid, she told herself to pretend it never happened.
Cecile admits that she carries the pain with her every day, and Barry says that he knows what it's like to bury the pain of losing a mother. He tells Cecile that she has to face the pain, and knows she can do it. Barry figures that it's their way out, and the Psycho Pirate is just amplifying her thrills. Cecile thinks about her time there, like she did when the portal appeared, and Barry regains his powers. He tells Cecile that he knows she can give up her "mask", he believes she can get them home and Cecile agrees.
In his workshop, Chester tells Iris that he has to go back to his garage to get supplies. Chester says that he shouldn't be there, and iris disagrees. He explains that he came there to work with Cisco, not replace him, and when he saw Barry in trouble he acted brave and confident like Cisco did. He figures that the love Cisco had for Team Flash is what let him help them, and admits that he doesn't have it.
Iris tells Chester that it took time and patience for Cisco to form his bonds. She says that they all have Chester's back, and he promises that he's going to up his game. He then realizes where the Psycho Pirate is going. Chester figures that Cecile needs something to amplify her powers to give Psycho Pirate a permanent food source, and the source is in their basement.
Cecile goes into the Starchives and finds the Thinker's chair.
Barry begins to undergo brain death, and Chester and Iris confirms by remote that Psycho Pirate has accessed the Chair. Chester has an idea but hesitates, and Iris assures him that it will work.
Barry and Cecile reach where the portal was before, but it isn't there. The ends of the hallway recede away from them, and the other Cecile appears, laughs, and tells Cecile that she belongs there forever. It fires a blast of energy from its eyes at Cecile, and Barry runs in the way and the blast knocks him out. The demon Cecile tells Cecile teat she's never checking out.
In the Chair, the Psycho Pirate realizes that someone has entered the room. It blasts Iris, who shoots at him with an energy gun.
In the mindscape, Cecile tells her illusory counterpart that it's her mind, not her counterpart's. The counterpart isn't impressed, and reminds Cecile that she wasn't so brave for her mother. Cecile finds herself in a straitjacket, while the counterpart continues tormenting her.
Iris circles around to the chair, then steps out, hands up.
The counterpart tells Cecile that she cracked once and will again. Cecile says to herself that she hid a piece of herself away, but she's not ashamed of it anymore. The straitjacket disappears, and Cecile tells the counterpart that she's done wearing a mask. She fires a blast of energy, blasting the counterpart away.
While the Psycho Pirate is focused on Iris, Chester leaps out with an energy sword, cuts through the force field protecting the Chair, and slices into it. He destroys the chair, and it releases a blast of energy.
In the mindscape, the portal opens. Barry wakes up and speeds him and Cecile through.
Chester removes the mask from Cecile's body, and she says that it's her.
Later, Caitlin takes the mask to ARGUS, where they'll put it in a mask with mental dampeners. Sue apologizes to Chester for snapping at him earlier, and says that she's going to stick around Central City for a while. She invites them to nightcaps on the patio of the penthouse hotel where she's staying. Once Sue leaves, Barry tells Cecile that she was the one who got them out of the mindscape, and she says that she's going home to tell Joe a few things.
Barry invites Chester alone, and Chester hesitates and then agrees. Iris assures Chester that he's a full-fledged member of Team Flash. He tells Barry and Iris that the next time they want to make out, take a day off or goo on a vacation. Once the couple leaves, Chester looks around the main room.
At the West house, Cecile tells Joe about her breakdown and says that she didn't tell him originally because she didn't want him to think she's weak. Joe tells her that there's no shame asking for help when they have mental problems, and they need to take care of themselves. He promises that he will always be there for her, and they'll get through anything together. Cecile takes Joe's hand and they say that they love each other. Joe then tells her that there's Kristen's last mission was to take out several strategic facilities, but led her squad into an ambush. Kristen was the only one who survived, and Joe figures that she was working with the enemy.
