It's been a while since we've seen a true prestige film hit the top of the Netflix charts. Or, at least, it seems that way. Last week we saw Jennifer Lopez sci-fi outing "Atlas" have a strong showing on Netflix, a development made all the more upsetting by the simultaneous success of Antonio Banderas' B-movie "Security," which similarly blew up on the streamer seven years after its initial release. Prior to that, everyone's favorite Ogre, "Shrek," dominated the Netflix charts, while Scott Adkins Dtv actioner "One Shot" also managed to find its own success amid the Shrek-fever of May. All of this seemed a tad desultory and, dare I say, disheartening. Now, though, it may be Poland to the rescue, with murder mystery "Colors of Evil: Red" seeing global success on the service.
The crime thriller is adapted from Małgorzata Oliwia Sobczak's book "Czerwień" and directed by Adrian Panek.

Any action fan, or even dedicated viewer of Corridor Crew's "Stuntmen React" series, should know the name Scott Adkins. Long before Adkins went all out for his role as German gangster Killa Harkan in "John Wick: Chapter 4," the British stunt performer and actor made a name for himself working as a stuntman for prominent Hong Kong action directors in the early 2000s. He went on to appear in dozens of action movies, from starring opposite Jean-Claude Van Damme in four separate films to doubling for Ryan Reynolds' Weapon XI in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." For his role as Gunnery Sergeant Barton Geddes in 2019's "Ip Man 4: The Finale," Adkins said star Donnie Yen — who also faced off against Keanu Reeves in "John Wick: Chapter 4" — requested him for the film by name.
Having remained somewhat of a B-movie action star for most of his career, Adkins is finally starting to get more mainstream recognition.

Sure, Tom Cruise doesn’t look anything like the Jack Reacher character as described in the novels by Lee Child – but the average movie-goer didn’t seem to mind in 2012, when audiences showed up to make the film Jack Reacher, written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie (based on Child’s novel One Shot) a box office success. Made on a budget of $60 million, Jack Reacher earned over $218 million worldwide. It looked like Cruise had a new franchise on his hands. But sometimes bizarre decisions are made in the name of franchise filmmaking. With McQuarrie busy working on a different Cruise franchise (Mission: Impossible), the Jack Reacher sequel was passed over to Cruise’s The Last Samurai director Edward Zwick. A promising start. But then the questionable decisions began, resulting in a sequel – 2016’s Jack Reacher: Never Go Back – that fell short of its predecessor in every way.

Lee Child's "Jack Reacher" books are tasty slabs of red meat for those who prefer their pulpy action hard-boiled, providing readers with a motley collection of crime investigations, despicable bad guys, and a hero who's the sort of unstoppable force that could make an immovable object shuffle a little. And so far, Prime Video's "Reacher" has stayed largely faithful to that ethos. The show might not hold up under critical scrutiny, but it's not meant to. Child's original novels are page-turners designed to be consumed in a single go by anyone and everyone regardless of their familiarity with the greater franchise, and the series is cut squarely from the same cloth.
Be that as it may, those who invest themselves in the extended "Reacher" mythology will be rewarded for their efforts. Throughout extensive flashbacks, season 1 fleshes out Jack Reacher's backstory, starting with his days as a military brat...

Stars: Scott Adkins, Waleed Elgadi, Tom Berenger, Meena Rayann, Michael Jai White, Aaron Toney | Written by Jamie Russell | Directed by James Nunn
Not only is One More Shot filmed with the illusion of being one long take like its predecessor 2021’s One Shot, it does something more important. It reunites director James Nunn and writer Jamie Russell with the previous film’s leads, Scott Adkins as Navy Seal Jake Harris and Waleed Elgadi as terrorist Amin Mansur.
Following the events of the first film, Harris is escorting Mansur back to the US where they plan to get him to reveal the whereabouts of a dirty bomb set to explode during the State of the Union Address, which the President, of course, refuses to postpone. For leverage, CIA Agent Marshall has brought Mansur’s pregnant wife Niesha to meet his plane. But they’re not the only ones there to meet the flight.

Watching a Navy Seal single-handedly take on a coach-load of mercenaries requires more than a little suspension of disbelief in this soulless sequel
A faint whiff of spoof hangs over this all guns blazing action thriller set in an airport where a military jet has landed with a terrorist on board. Inside the terminal, spooks in black suits woodenly bark homeland security jargon at each other: “Prepare for the evacuation of the asset!” The movie already feels faintly ridiculous, then in stomps martial arts actor Scott Adkins. He plays Jake Harris, a super-tough Navy Seal escorting the terrorist. And the thing about Harris is he’s unkillable; fling him over a balcony or karate chop him in the neck, and up he pops again, knife in hand, ready to stab another bad guy in the throat.

"You can't stop this. It's too big." Sony Pictures has revealed an official trailer for an action thriller sequel titled One More Shot, which will be out direct-to-video (and on VOD) in a few weeks. This action-packed high-octane thriller continues right where One Shot left off - it's a sequel to that one-long-take movie, using that same real time action gimmick all over again. Following the attack on the black site in Poland, Navy Seal Jake Harris is ordered to escort terrorist suspect Amin Mansur to Washington D.C for interrogation. As they're chased through the airport terminal by ruthless terrorists, Harris will have to use all his battle-honed skills to survive. Scott Adkins returns to star as Harris; he's joined by Michael Jai White, Tom Berenger, Meena Rayann, and Alexis Knapp. This trailer doesn't confirm if it actually is one-long-take again, but the countdown time seems to indicate they're...

This post contains spoilers for season 2 of "Reacher."
Jack Reacher is back -- it even says so on the hilarious season 2 poster -- with a new mystery to solve in "Reacher" season 2. And by his calculations, it's been two years, seven months, and 19 days since we last saw him. Season 1 of the popular Prime Video show ended with the military special investigator turned hobo by choice (Alan Ritchson) leaving Margrave, Georgia, where he had just gotten to the bottom of a string of murders that left his brother dead. This time around, Reacher's reuniting with his old squad to figure out who's tossing their colleagues out of planes.
In terms of the source material, season 1 of "Reacher" adapted the first Jack Reacher novel, Lee Child's "Killing Floor," while season 2 zooms ahead to the eleventh book in the series, "Bad Luck and Trouble." Given Reacher's drifter lifestyle and knack for...

If you’re a sports league or a superstar athlete, it used to be that you wanted all eyes to be on the field, court or track. Now, the real action occurs as much after the game’s over, with cameras still rolling. The runaway success of Netflix’s Formula 1 docuseries Drive to Survive and golf docuseries Full Swing has sparked a mini frenzy from leagues, teams and athletes, all of which are hoping that a hit docuseries of their own can drive new interest in their in-game performances, or at least provide an ancillary stream of revenue to an already lucrative sports business.
Netflix, for its part, is happy to crow about its success in the genre. “After Drive to Survive took off, fans started packing the stands at the races,” the streamer’s vp ad sales Peter Naylor told a crowd at Advertising Week New York on Oct.

Writer/director Jesse V. Johnson opens his latest film, Boudica, on an impressive note. Roman soldiers march through a dark, fog-enshrouded, forest. The warrior goddess they hoped to summon doesn’t save them and the legion graphically slaughters them.

Carter (2022).There’s a scene in Carter that exemplifies how the film pushes the formal conceit of the “single-take” actioner to new extremes. Amnesiac protagonist Carter Lee (Joo Won), tasked with rescuing the kidnapped daughter (Kim Bo-min) of a renowned virologist (Jung Jae-young), walks with the girl into an alley. Suddenly, a motorcyclist races by, snatching her up. Another rider arrives, whom Carter kicks and sends into a pile of boxes. Arcing up to an overhead position, the camera observes from above as a third bike collides into the tipped-over second, flipping both vehicle and passenger onto the ground. As Carter steals one of the bikes and begins his pursuit, the camera drops to what seems to be mere inches from the pavement, somehow keeping pace as our hero accelerates to dangerous speeds. A yellow van suddenly passes over the still-low-to-the-ground camera from behind and makes a squealing U-turn, at...

When you look at the history of how the Marvel Cinematic Universe came to be, the casting of Robert Downey Jr. was viewed as a very risky decision. And now we can't imagine anyone else but him as "Iron Man." It is undoubtedly one of Marvel Studios' greatest successes, and in the years to come, the growing interest in the MCU would help turn more niche comic book titles into megablockbuster hits ("Guardians of the Galaxy").
At this point, the MCU has essentially reached a point where its projects no longer need to prove themselves in order to be successful. "Iron Man" was, by all accounts, a miracle that led to Marvel Studios' domination. When we talk about surprises under the Marvel banner, especially given how quickly folks seemed to turn on it, I would argue that one of Marvel's greatest success stories is one that we don't really talk about as much.

I Am Groot was a surprising addition to Marvel Studios’ line-up, but a welcome one. A series of five shorts, each of which was brought to life by breath-taking CGI artistry; the stories were low-stake and focused on the Guardians of the Galaxy member during his younger years, after the events of the first film.
The release of these shorts, which have very clearly been defined as separate entities on Disney+ rather than an ongoing show, has indicated that Marvel is willing to get a little riskier when it comes to the formats in which they tell their stories. There’s surely a place for short films within the context of the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe. What narrative opportunities could occur thanks to the addition of this platform, and are there any benefits to reviving these mini-movies?

One Shot is a series that seeks to find an essence of cinema history in one single image of a movie. Surrounded by the stillness and tranquillity of nature, anchored by the building facade of her eldest son’s home, Tomi (Chieko Higashiyama) quietly watches her grandson play with the grass of the fields that surround them. This enigmatic shot is from Yasujirō Ozu‘s Tokyo Story (1953), a film widely considered to be the director’s magnus opus and one deeply rooted in the examination of everyday life in 1950s Japan, yet universal in its exploration of familial relations, loss, and the upending of tradition. The story follows an aging couple, played by Ozu regulars Chishu Ryu and Higashiyama, who travel from their tiny town of Onomichi to bustling postwar Tokyo in order to visit their adult children. The couple, however, discover that they are too preoccupied with their demanding...

Stars: Bruce Willis, Lauren McCord, Ashley Greene, Massi Furlan, Adam Huel Potter, Michael Sirow, Texas Battle | Written by Bill Lawrence | Directed by Mike Burns
The last of Bruce Willis’ films continue to trickle out, and the most recent one to come our way is Wrong Place, which reunites Willis with music supervisor turned director Mike Burns and writer Bill Lawrence, the team responsible for Out of Death. I won’t blame you if you give up on it after reading that.
Frank was a police chief, now he’s a security guard. But when we first see him he’s still a cop. He and his wife Maggie are drunkenly discussing their daughter Chloe being diagnosed with cancer. On the way home from their wine-soaked dinner he swerves to avoid a deer on the road. I’m sure you can guess the rest.

“Stranger Things” star Joe Keery, Camila Morrone and Aldis Hodge are all starring in a romantic heist film called “Marmalade” from Signature Films that has just wrapped filming earlier this month in Minnesota.
“Marmalade” is the directorial debut from actor Keir O’Donnell and is based on his own script.
Here’s the logline: In order to escape jail and reunite with the alluring love of his life, a naive small-town man narrates the colorful tale of a romantic bank heist to his cunning cellmate.
“Marmalade” is produced by Tea Shop Productions’ James Harris and Mark Lane with Sarah Gabriel and Marc Goldberg under the Signature Films banner, and is produced in association with Jason Shapiro for Silver Lining Entertainment. Polly Morgan is the cinematographer.

Murda Beatz assembled the superstar cast of Quavo, Anitta, and J Balvin for his party-ready new single, “No Más” — which also features hit-maker Pharrell as co-producer.
The bass-heavy track arrived alongside a Miami-set music video, produced by Fela and directed by Jackson Tisi. The sun-filled clip sees the singers riding around in luxury cars and chilling on white sand beaches as they lay down the track.
“It’s a record I’m excited about, bringing four different worlds together; America, Colombia, Brazil, and Canada,” Murda Beatz said in a statement.

"You gonna tell us what really happened?" Redbox has revealed an official trailer for Black Site, an action thriller from filmmaker Sophia Banks making her feature directorial debut with this. In addition to one other film that's also called Black Site (a horror), there's so many other forgettable films recently that are also set at "CIA black sites" - for example One Shot or Invincible or Agent Game just in the past year alone. In fact, the plot of this one sounds a lot like the plot of Agent Game, which is probably why it's being dumped to VOD. A group of officers based in a labyrinthine top-secret must fight for their lives against Hatchet, a brilliant and infamous high-value detainee. When he escapes, his mysterious and deadly agenda has far-reaching and dire consequences. Michelle Monaghan stars with Jason Clarke, Jai Courtney, Uli Latukefu, Lucy Barrett, and Phoenix Raei. This doesn't look that bad,...

One Shot is a series that seeks to find an essence of cinema history in one single image of a movie. In Anurag Kashyap's socio-political drama Gulaal (2009), the stirring climactic lament "Duniya" encapsulates the filmmaker's disillusionment with the world: a world mired in deceit, greed, sectarianism, and megalomania; a world where goodness succumbs to the brute force of evil. This song sequence sees the naïve protagonist Dilip Singh (Raj Singh Chaudhary) slowly dying of his gunshot wound, culminating in the antagonist Karan (Aditya Srivastava) being declared the head of the secessionist Rajputana movement. The haunting crescendo by music composer-lyricist-singer Piyush Mishra underscores the close-up framing of Karan, whose devilish stare into the camera has been etched in the collective memory of Kashyap's admirers. Throughout his career, the rebellious auteur has had to bear criticism for exploring dark themes in his films, propagating cynicism, and indulging in downbeat endings. Like Dilip,...

One Shot is a series that seeks to find an essence of cinema history in one single image of a movie. On a sunny afternoon in Liverpool a mother sits on the windowsill of a red-brick terraced house, her body perched precariously on the outside of the window as she scrubs the glass. The danger of the moment is felt through the eyes of her children who stare transfixed from the end of the hallway, willing her not to fall with the strength of their gaze. This scene occurs 20 minutes into Terence Davies’ Distant Voices, Still Lives (1988). By this point we have witnessed the brutal and unpredictable violence of Pete Postlethwaite’s father and we understand the consequences of a household without the love and protection of Freda Dowie’s mother. As the camera takes the perspective of the siblings, moving slowly toward the window, we are met with the...

Stars: Scott Adkins, Ashley Greene, Waleed Elgadi, Ryan Phillippe, Emmanuel Imani, Dino Kelly, Jack Parr, Jess Liaudin, Lee Charles | Written by Jamie Russell | Directed by James Nunn
One Shot is both the title of the new Scott Adkins film, it’s also the film’s gimmick and reason for being made in the first place. Director James Nunn, working from a script by Jamie Russell, has given us a feature-length action film shot in one continuous take.
Needless to say, One Shot keeps the plotting to a minimum. CIA operative Zoe Anderson has been assigned to bring terrorist Amin Mansur (Waleed Elgadi; Agatha and the Curse of Ishtar) from a Black Site to the US for questioning. The base’s commander Jack Yorke doesn’t think that’s a good idea and is refusing to release him.

There are plenty of jokes that can be made when describing the premise and creation of James Nunn’s action thriller, “One Shot.” Perhaps a quip about how those behind the scenes had one shot to make a film of this nature and, sadly, completely blew it. But a trite, hack joke doesn’t given enough credit to what the filmmaker and his cast attempt. With the film’s core gimmick being the fact that the entirety of its runtime consists of one long, uninterrupted take, as anyone with a theatre background knows, there’s a high level of skill required to let the cameras roll without edits.

Scott Adkins in action in One Shot
If you’re not familiar with the work of actor and stunt performer Scott Adkins, the chances are that you have seen it nonetheless. He’s tremendously prolific, having appeared in everything from Eastenders to Zero Dark Thirty, The Expendables 2, Chinese blockbuster The Wolf Warrior, and Marvel’s Doctor Strange (in which he accidentally punched Benedict Cumberbatch for real). He’s recently been getting more prominent leading roles and is currently starring in One Shot as the leader of a squad of Navy SEALs charged with picking up a valuable detainee from a holding centre – a job which becomes considerably more complicated when the centre is invaded by terrorists. Framed as a single sequence, it’s a full on action spectacular and a real test for Scott, who has to run and fight almost continually for much of the running time.
