When Keanu Reeves’ John Wick was released back in 2014, it changed the action genre for good. The shaky-cam, fast-cuts style popularized by the Jason Bourne franchise and the MCU was done away with for more elaborate gun-fu-inspired combat sequences. The films have influenced many others like Nobody, Extraction, and Atomic Blonde.
However, the John Wick franchise may have a new competitor in town as the recent Will Smith-starrer Bad Boys: Ride or Die gave fans a surprisingly adrenaline-pumping action sequence. While Smith himself is not involved in the scene, Dennis McDonald’s Reggie steals the show as he takes on fifteen men who attack his home.

A group of exhibitors in the U.S. and Canada will invest more than $2.2 billion over the next three years to upgrade and modernize their theaters amid renewed optimism at the box office after a battering by Covid and Hollywood strikes, said industry trade group NATO.
The chains, representing over 1,600 locations across all 50 states and Canada, include AMC Entertainment, Regal Cinemas, Cinemark USA, Cineplex, Marcus, B&b Theatres, Harkins Theatres and Santikos Entertainment. Together they handle 21,000 screens and 67% of the North American box office.
“This industry has not had a quote ‘normal’ year in five years,” NATO President and CEO Michael O’Leary tell Deadline. What it needs “is just four or five months of normalcy. And I think that is what you are seeing now … So we’ll see in 2025 if we can actually have an entire calendar year without something that is beyond our control impacting our industry.”

North American movie exhibitors are set to invest $2.2 billion in new theater upgrades to take advantage of Hollywood’s overall box office rebound this year.
On Thursday, the National Association of Theatre Owners said its members were plowing fresh money into the theatrical experience over the next three years to continue drawing cinema-goers out of their homes after studio tentpoles like Inside Out 2, Deadpool & Wolverine, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, It Ends With Us and Despicable Me 4 filled the local multiplex earlier this year.
“There is no question that movie fans of all ages love heading to the local theatre to see great movies on the big screen. But the competition for consumers’ hard-earned dollars is fiercer than ever,” NATO president and CEO Michael O’Leary stated, as theater owners continue to face stiff streaming-era competition.

“Hacks,” “Fellow Travelers,” “Black Cake” and Ava DuVernay’s “Origin” were among the big winners on Thursday as Humanitas revealed its 2024 Humanitas Prize recipients. The ceremony, held at Avalon Hollywood, revealed honors in nine juried categories, including TV, film and documentary fields.
“We actually got something friends,” “Origin” filmmaker Ava DuVernay said in accepting the award for drama feature — which had been previously snubbed through last year’s Oscars season. “We went through that whole awards gauntlet, and then this popped up in the summer, and I thought, ‘wow, they’re kind of off kilter for the award season!’ Because they don’t care about that… they’re doing something different. This award show that is about doing something with this medium that matters. Yes, entertainment matters, but we have such a powerful voice, such a powerful platform. So I commend everyone that’s trying to say something.”

“Twisters” (Universal) wasn’t the biggest film of the summer. But it is becoming the comeback kid among the group, both theatrically and at home.
The tornado-focused special effects disaster film just had a very rare weekend in theaters. In its seventh weekend, losing 200 screens, its gross increased 17 percent. That comes in its third week at home on PVOD. And right at the same time, “Twisters” returned to #1 at iTunes, edging out the second weekend of “Inside Out 2” (Disney), 2024’s biggest hit.
The Pixar film retains its top spot at Fandango, with the advantage that its $24.99 rental cost gives it with that site listing by revenue earned, not transactions like iTunes does. In any event, the split decision this week continues a now multi-month trend of no film placing #1 at both for two consecutive weeks.

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence worked together to create one of cinema’s biggest franchises in the Bad Boys series. But in the second film, Michael Bay was facing some stiff competition from other action movies. This had a small but effective impact on how Bad Boys 2 turned out.

It’s been over two decades since Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker first teamed up for Rush Hour, the blockbuster buddy cop movie that worked way better without the involvement of Jay Leno.

But after three hit movies, the Rush Hour series sputtered to a halt. Why? Well, for one thing, Tucker decided to take a break from Hollywood. But now he seems totally up for making another sequel, even telling reporters last year that Rush Hour 4 was “close” to happening.
Chan also seems amenable to the idea of continuing the adventures of Detective Inspector Lee. So what’s the problem? Well, it seems like the project comes with some pretty major baggage: director Brett Ratner.
As most of you are probably aware, in 2017, multiple women accused Ratner of abuses ranging from sexual harassment to rape, all of which he denied. This was in addition to his past indiscretions,...

Will Smith is one of the few public figures who rooted himself as a pop culture giant out of obscurity and a career in rap music. Renowned as a globally celebrated actor, Smith became a page-turner for Hollywood with big draws such as Bad Boys, Independence Day, and the Men in Black franchise.

By the end of the 1990s, the Fresh Prince became one of the biggest stars of Hollywood, especially after his titular role in Ali (2002) shot him to an Academy Award nominee status. Soon, Will Smith began to exude a demigod-like presence with his blockbuster career and his unfailing cinematic masterpieces alongside a family that was first-generation Hollywood royalty… until slaps and entanglements unraveled the illusion like spaghetti.

Marvel’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” (Disney), like “Twisters” (Universal) and “Inside Out 2” (Disney) before it, outpaced all projections. Yes, it broke many records in its $205 million U.S./Canada debut, but even more exciting is it represents a bigger trend toward overperforming titles.
The more breathless box-office reporters will include unadjusted (read: misleading) grosses, but it achieved at least two milestones free and clear. It is the second-biggest opening in the post-Covid era (only “Spider-Man: No Way Home” at $260 million is higher), and it is by far the biggest debut of any R-rated release. Yes, it’s $43 million more than “Barbie” opened to last year.
Even better, the weekend’s total gross of $278 million is this year’s best, by a margin of $74 million. It’s the second-best weekend since 2023, beaten only by the historic “Barbie”/”Oppenheimer.” Year to date grosses stand at $4.7 billion, 17 percent below last year.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die (Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah)
Bad Boys: Ride or Die is a film about retribution and redemption. Not just on screen, but in execution. After their last attempt at a blockbuster was shelved in the name of a tax loophole, directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah seem intent on unleashing all their pent-up energy, whether they’re selling us Batgirls or Bad Boys. Even if it bears the baggage of a meta redemption arc for its star, Ride or Die brings enough stylistic gusto to its action in the absence of Michael Bay but has a hard time justifying most other decisions, which adopt the tedium rampant in modern blockbuster filmmaking. – Conor O. Lee Isaac Chung's Twisters is feeling it and chasing it at the box office! That's right folks, the Minari filmmaker will be feeling wonderful (wonderful) after his disaster movie sequel stormed to an almighty $123 million at the global box office this past weekend. The Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones, and Anthony Ramos starrer made it rain to the tune of $80.5 million on its domestic opening Stateside (a disaster flick record that eclipses The Day After Tomorrow's $68.4 million open back in 2004), whilst internationally the follow-up to Jan De Bont's Og Twister has now brewed up a cool further $42.5 million.
The critical and commercial success of Twisters continues a summer box office season that's overcome a nervy start with the underwhelming turnouts for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and The Fall Guy and gone from strength to strength of late. In the last couple of months, we've seen Inside Out 2...

Twisters Debuts With Top Grade On CinemaScore ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Glen Powell’s Twisters are not just whipping up a storm at the box office but have also stirred up rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. Twisters, which hit theatres on July 19, surpassed projected expectations of $50 Million and raked in over $70 M in the domestic opening. The film also scored high with audiences on the opening night per CinemaScore.

The comedy series Survival of the Thickest, created by Michelle Buteau and Danielle Sanchez-Wittell (New Girl), hasn’t just survived, but thrived — and Season 2 is currently in production in New York.
The ensemble cast of Buteau, Tasha Smith (Bad Boys: Ride or Die), Tone Bell, Liza Treyge, Peppermint (Harlem), and Marouane Zotti will be returning, along with new guest stars Anderson .Paak, Jonathan Chad Higginbotham, Deon Cole, Alecsys Proctor-Turner, Jerrie Johnson, Celisse, Rolonda Watts, Michael Rishawn, Tika Sumpter, Monét X Change, and RonReaco Lee.

Gru and his mischievous minions are hoping to fulfill their patriotic duty and once again set off major fireworks at the Fourth of July box office.

Paramount’s prequel A Quiet Place: Day One is in a closer-than-expected race with Pixar’s reigning champ Inside Out 2 for the weekend box office crown, while Kevin Costner’s pricey Western Horizon: An American Saga is being left in the dust
The third A Quiet Place movie won Friday with an estimated $22.5 million, putting it on course for a domestic debut of $53 million to $55 million, the best of the franchise for a three-day number. Heading into the weekend, the sci-fi horror thriller was tracking to open to $40 million-plus, considering franchise creator John Krasinski didn’t direct this time; nor did Emily Blunt star.
Instead, Michael Sarnoski (Pig) was brought on to helm Day One, based on a story he and Krasinski came up with together. Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn star in the $70 million pic, which boasts generally strong reviews and a B+ CinemaScore, a good grade for a horror pic.

Inside Out 2 has continued to break records at the box office, with it boasting an incredible $100 million second weekend. Last week, it didn’t have too much in the way of competition, but this weekend, it’s being pitted against two big-budget new releases, A Quiet Place: Day One and Horizon. However, only one of these movies is bound to post any real competition to Pixar’s animated hit.
A Quiet Place: Day One could take the top spot from Inside Out 2 this weekend. The first movie opened with $50 million, while the sequel (despite opening during the pandemic) posted a $47 million opening. The prequel, which lacks the star power of the first two movies (no Emily Blunt or John Krasinski this time), seems likely to open in that range, with it aiming for about $45 million. Will that be good enough to top Inside Out 2?

There hasn’t been a lot to celebrate at the box office in 2024. Ticket sales have languished. There’s been a dearth of blockbusters. And a few movies that bucked the odds to actually debut in the first half-of-the year probably should have skipped theaters altogether. We’re looking at you, “Argylle.”
And yet, some films still managed to pack in crowds. “Dune: Part Two” and “Inside Out 2” performed like major studio movies of yore, while IFC’s “Late Night With the Devil” proved that there’s still life in the indie business. There were also redemption stories. Will Smith restored the luster on his tarnished star with another “Bad Boys,” and “Garfield,” whose love affair with lasagna dates back to 1976, proved that some kitties have nine lives.
Here’s a look at what scored and stumbled as 2024 reaches its mid-point.

Box Office – It’s a half-century for Chandu Champion after yet another good jump on Sunday; needs to keep consolidating now – Sunday updates ( Photo Credit – YouTube )
It’s a 50 for Chandu Champion. The film could have managed that on Saturday but missed scoring that by just a few lakhs. However, the moment Sunday morning shows kicked off, there was a half-century celebration waiting for it. The film carried forward the momentum created ever since the start of the weekend, which is reflected in Sunday collections, which have come well.
The film ended up netting 8.01 crores more, and that’s much more than double what it had collected on Friday [3.32 crores]. It was a similar trend in the first weekend as well when Sunday collections were double that of Friday, and that was when on Monday there was the partial holiday of Eid, which benefitted evening and night shows on Saturday. This weekend,...
It’s a 50 for Chandu Champion. The film could have managed that on Saturday but missed scoring that by just a few lakhs. However, the moment Sunday morning shows kicked off, there was a half-century celebration waiting for it. No one saw this coming. “Inside Out 2” (Disney) fell only 35 percent in its second weekend. Following a great $154 million opening, huge initial weekdays, it’s added an estimated $100 million. That puts it at $355 million in only 10 days.
How big is that? Second only since Covid to “Spider-Man: No Way Home” in 2021, which had December 25 and 26 in the first 10 days of its opening, eventually grossing $470 million in that time. It even edges out “Barbie” ($351 million) and bests the full run of “Oppenheimer.”
This is phenomenal. In many ways, this weekend is even more impressive than the strong debut. With less emphasis on premium screens and of course many lower-price tickets for kids, sales outpace any release since “No Way Home.” Kids also always elevate concessions, which makes the bounty for theaters even greater.
The total weekend gross will be around $152 million, an improvement of $41 million from last year and reducing the year-to-date shortfall to 21 percent.

After just two weekends of release, “Inside Out 2” is towering above the rest as the highest-grossing movie of the year.
Disney and Pixar’s sequel has generated $355 million in North America and $724 million globally to date, overtaking the previous record holder, “Dune: Part Two” ($282 million domestically and $711 million worldwide). At this rate, it’ll soon be the first movie of 2024 to cross $1 billion worldwide.
Internationally, the “Inside Out” sequel collected $164.4 million from 44 territories in its second outing. So far, it has earned $369.2 million overseas to stand as the year’s third-biggest international release behind “Godzilla x Kong” ($371 million) and “Dune Part 2” ($429 million). Top earning markets include Mexico ($63.9 million), the United Kingdom ($29.2 million), Korea ($29 million), Germany ($17.9 million) and Brazil ($17.3 million). It opens in its final major market, Japan, on Aug. 1.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die has proven to be a big hit for Sony Pictures, with its current worldwide gross sitting at $227 million and growing. It also pushed the Bad Boys franchise over the $1 billion box-office mark. I’d imagine this is good news for a potential Bad Boys 5, and although nothing is official, directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah do have a few ideas.
While speaking with Variety, the pair said they’d like to make Bad Boys 5 a more “international” story. “We’re going to first see what this is going to do,” Fallah said. “But what we want [is] to go around the world with them.“
El Arbi added, “In every country we were imagining, how would Mike and Marcus be in France, or how would they be in the U.K., or how would they be in Dubai, or in Morocco, or in Africa, or in Asia?...

Last weekend, Pixar’s Inside Out 2 ended the box office woes that have plagued movie theaters since mid-spring. With a $155 million domestic opening, which is the second-highest animated film opening ever, Disney’s Pixar is now back at the top of the box office heap. With very little in the way of competition this weekend, its continued run at number one is all but assured. But how much will it make on its second weekend, and how steep will the week 2 drop be? If you look back at The Incredibles 2, which is the highest-grossing animated opening ever, it fell off about 56% in week two, although I think Inside Out 2 may have a better hold.
Despite its blockbuster opening, I remember the audience’s reaction to The Incredibles 2 being relatively cool. Audiences seem to be absolutely loving Inside Out 2, with many finding the introduction of Maya Hawke...

Riding high on the tidal wave of success, Sony Pictures and the charismatic Will Smith are already eyeing the horizon for new creative ventures, the ink barely dry on their latest hit, Bad Boys: Ride or Die.
Based on Daniel Suarez’s lauded novel Influx, Resistor is set to challenge our perceptions with a tale of brilliant minds against covert suppression. As the actor prepares to star in Sony’s latest science fiction thriller, intrigue surrounds the project, which seems to be reminiscent of a previous Keanu Reeves flick – Chain Reaction (1996 film) – with a similar premise of revolutionary technological discovery.

Indeed, unknown plot details abound, Influx is set in a dystopian society in which the government uses questionable tactics to obstruct technological advancement. Is it a genius move to swap the enigma of clean energy for the uncharted territories of gravity control?...
