- TriviaIan Bohen and Tyler Hoechlin previously played uncle and nephew Peter and Derek Hale in Teen Wolf (2011) and have remained good friends ever since. This episode is their first collaboration since the end of Teen Wolf in 2017.
- GoofsSeveral times, Superman refers to Lt. General Anderson as Lieutenant. Lt. Generals are referred to as General or, in formal settings, as Lieutenant General, never Lieutenant. That's a demotion.
- Quotes
Lois Lane: I'm sorry for what happened to you, Natalie.
Natalie Irons: You don't have to apologize. You don't even know me.
Lois Lane: No, but I'd like to.
Natalie Irons: Yeah, okay.
Lois Lane: When I saw you come out of that pod and you were looking at me, I froze. I had no idea how I was supposed to react. I've been thinking a lot about that moment since you left. What I could have said or done differently.
Natalie Irons: Is that why you kept calling? To make yourself feel better?
Lois Lane: No.
Natalie Irons: Look, you didn't have to say anything, okay? You're not... you're not my mom.
Lois Lane: I know I'm not. And I would never pretend to be. But I could have at least explained the situation to you. I'm just sorry that I let you walk away. I was hoping that we could maybe be friends.
Natalie Irons: I don't wanna be a charity case.
Lois Lane: That's not what this is.
Natalie Irons: But you already have kids. You have a family. Why would you want me in your life?
Lois Lane: Because you seem wonderful, smart, poised, lovely. You're a survivor. So many reasons. I just think it'd be good for both of us... if we're in each other's lives.

What Lies Beneath begins the season with lots of promise, building on the plot and character arcs from the previous season and especially the season one finale. Brent Fletcher & Todd Helbing wrote the script for this episode and the latter actually wrote the season 1 finale, I couldn't see any flaws regarding the writing in this episode, it was the quality we are used in seeing and the same is said regarding the other departments, the quality is there. I actually thought this was a solid season premiere, not the best as it didn't really pack a lot of punch like what we think a premiere would be, but what we got was a more dramatic episode with plenty of character development and plot development, ultimately building towards interesting story arcs.
I have read some criticism about the writing for Lois Lane in this episode and honestly I don't agree with them, it feels weird though how it took her 3 whole months, 1 or 2 months is understandable but let's get behind this. So we know from the previous season how Lois Lane lost a baby and how her mother left her when young, so her feelings in this episode is completely realistic towards Natalie. Another criticism was how Lois had more screen time and the show is called Superman and Lois so they should have equal amount of screen time, I was one of them who looked forward in seeing where they would take Lois Lane's character arc in this season and I think they went the right route. Did Superman's arc hold up to Lois? Time will tell as this episode was all about building towards the reveal of the next big bad and his relationship with the Army.
