Deputy Kenya Jones tells Sam that the jail is full of Bon Temps residents because it must be a full moon. This is a reference to the belief that there is an increase in crime during a full moon and is, in fact, the origin of the word 'lunatic' as many people, historically, have blamed the full moon for madness. However, there is no empirical evidence or data to show that crime increases during a full moon.
