During her dancing, Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) alternately holds one hand straight up and the opposite hand at a right angle to it while waving each hand in a sensual manner. This may be an homage to Carolyn Jones's portrayal of Morticia Addams when she often used the same gesture while dancing with Gomez (John Astin).
Wednesday's dance is a call back to when Wednesday played by Lisa Loring in the original Addams Family teaches Lurch to dance. Both dances are eccentric.
The paint falling from the sprinkler system in the prom night emulates the blood bath of Sissy Spacek in the movie Carrie (1976) by Brian de Palma. That's is evident when Wednesday Adams sips the red paint and says "They couldn't even spring for real pig's blood". Pig blood is used in Carrie.
When Eugene is attacked in the woods by the monster, his clothes and the shot of him lying on the floor is extremely similar to when David gets attacked in 'American Werewolf in London'.
