San Sebastian — From when it began to incorporate Spanish TV series in its Official Selection – think 2017’s “The Plague” or 2020’s double whammy of “Patria” and “Riot Police” – San Sebastián has used its first Saturday to debate TV issues.
This time round, a panel highlighted crime series, featuring Movistar Plus+’s Susana Herreras, Laura Sarmiento, showrunner of Netflix hit “Intimacy” and lead writer on “Burning Body,” and Elías León Siminiani, co-creator of the 2017 docuseries “El caso Asunta (Operación Nenúfar)” which inspired the 2024 Netflix fiction series, “El Caso Asunta.”
Six takes on the panel discussion:
Spanish Crime Series Boom
The panel was entitled in Spanish “The Spanish Crime Series Boom.” That seems an understatement. According to Variety research, through Sept. 13 this year, seven Spanish titles hit No. 1 on Netflix’s Global Non-English TV series charts, occupying the top-charting position for a total 15 of the period’s total 35 weeks. Kaitlin Olson is back on double duty as producer and star of ABC‘s High Potential, which might prove to be her most relatable role yet.
As the 3x Emmy nominee celebrated the premiere of her new crime procedural with her co-stars and creator Drew Goddard on Tuesday in Los Angeles, Olson told Deadline how the show’s bigger mystery of her character Morgan’s missing ex spoke to her as a mother.
“One of the reasons that Morgan is compelled to work for the police department is because the father of her first-born child has been missing for 14 years, and she does no believe that he would have abandoned her or her daughter. The police didn’t believe her, so she mistrusts authority, and this is a new opportunity to have this current police help her figure that out,” said Olson. “I think it’s for her, but I...

After making a name for herself as one of the four ne’er-do-wells of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”, Kaitlin Olson is entering the world of network procedurals in ABC’s “High Potential” in a move that even surprised herself.
“My agent brought this idea to me and gave me a summary, and I was like, ‘Wow, that sounds like not at all what I was thinking that I would do next,'” Olson told TheWrap, adding that her mind was quickly changed after reading series creator Drew Goddard’s script. “It’s so hard to balance a character and heart and soul with a dramatic procedural — it just needs a certain intelligence, talent and creativity to be able to do that, and I just thought he did it so seamlessly.”

Move over Scandinoir, because Gallic producers are giving crime the French Touch.
Beloved at home and lucrative abroad, a new strain of audience inclusive procedurals has paved inroads on the international market. Indeed, fueled by the earlier success of long-running series “Candice Renoir,” and made stratospheric by smashes “Hpi” and “Tandem,” the so-called “light crime” genre has become a new French delicacy.
“The genre skillfully blends criminal investigations with everyday moments, creating a balance between mystery and the light, family tone,” says Mediawan Rights exec Randall Broman. “[We’ve seen] a growing demand for lighter, more reassuring content, while viewers appreciate the captivating plots without excessive violence. This ability to blend intrigue and humor makes French producers leading players in the genre.”
Megahit “Hpi” delivered 11 million viewers at home and has sold to over 110 territories, while the U.S. remake will premiere later this month on ABC and Hulu. Other recent successes in...

French TV international programming sales last year remained high despite worsening market conditions, slipping just 5.3% year on year to €203.4 million ($224.7 million), according to the annual report on audiovisual exports by France’s National Center of Cinema (Cnc) and film and TV promotional org Unifrance.
Indeed, 2023 marked just the third time in 30 years that sales exceeded the €200 million mark, following 2017 with €205.2 million ($225.7 million) and 2022, a record year with €214.8 million ($236.3 million).
Presenting the latest figures at the Unifrance Rendez-Vous TV market in Le Havre, the Cnc’s Cécile Lacoue and Sarah Hemar of Unifrance noted that the export performance of French programs has held up well in a difficult international environment characterized by lower acquisition budgets and a contraction of the North American market in particular, less risk-taking on the part of buyers, and longer negotiations between partners.

French commercial network Tf1 has unveiled fresh details of its new free streaming platform TF1+, which launches on January 8.
The launch comes just over a year after the calling-off of a planned merger between TF1 and rival commercial network M6 and just months after the shuttering of Salto, TF1’s failed joint streaming platform with M6 and France Télévisions.
TF1 Managing Director Rodolphe Belmer told a news conference in Paris on Wednesday that the network wanted TF1+ to become the biggest free streaming platform in France.
“It’s a big moment for the group and a major launch,” he said.
A key aim behind its creation, he added, was to increase TF1’s advertising revenue in the digital domain.
Noting that 35 of every 100 hours of TV viewing in France are now consumed on an on-demand basis, Belmer said TF1 needed to be more proactive in the digital space.

Following in the footsteps of U.S. guilds, French TV crew members are poised to go on strike amid a battle with producers over minimum wages.
Labor union Cgt-spiac has sought a 20% increase on basic salaries for crew members working in production and post-production of TV shows, documentaries and unscripted content in France. But after several weeks of negotiations, the producers’ bargaining units offered a 5% increase for crew members earning €1,000 or less per week, and a 3% increase for those earning €1000 or more. The Cgt-spiac reacted almost immediately calling for a strike vote.
Crew members already went on strike for two days in mid-November, a stoppage that affected nearly 50 shoots, including Mediawan’s “Hpi,” season 2 of AMC’s “The Walking Dead : Daryl Dixon” and M6’s “Top Chef.” If union members approve another strike by the vote, the walkout will run for five days, a duration that could be extended.

ABC has decided to cancel Home Economics.
The series, which starred Topher Grace, Jimmy Tatro and Cailtin McGee and their “sibling relationship: one in the 1%, one middle-class and one barely holding on.”
Variety reports that the show had been a solid sitcom for the network but had been on the bubble between renewal and cancellation following the season three finale in January.
At the same time, ABC announced that Kaitlin Olson starrer High Potential will join the lineup, and debut in 2024.
The show is based on the French series Haut Potentiel Intellectuel (Hpi), and focuses on a “single mom with an exceptional mind, whose unconventional knack for solving crimes leads to an unusual and unstoppable partnership with a by-the-book seasoned detective (Daniel Sunjata).”
Following Home Economics‘ cancellation, there’s only one more show still on the bubble.

ABC has canceled the comedy series “Home Economics” after three seasons, Variety has learned. In addition, the new series “High Potential” starring Kaitlin Olson is now slated to debut in fall 2024.
“Home Economics” aired its third season finale in January of this year, which will now serve as its series finale. The series was one of just two ABC shows that remained on the bubble, with the other being the spinoff “The Rookie: Feds.”
“Home Economics” was a solid performer for ABC but never quite a breakout. ABC picked up the show for a 13 episode third season but then declined to expand the order beyond that. Fans of the show were given a glimmer of hope over the summer when ABC reportedly extended the casts’ options, meaning they were still considering a fourth season, but it ultimately did not come to pass.

ABC is making some changes to its lineup following the resolution of the writers strike.
Comedy Home Economics has been canceled after three seasons, and new drama High Potential has been moved to fall 2024.
ABC still has to make decisions on a renewal for The Rookie: Feds and the status of The Good Lawyer, a backdoor-pilot spinoff of The Good Doctor. It passed on four of its pilots in June: Anthony Anderson-fronted Public Defenders and Ellie Kemper-led Keeping It Together, which is a remake of British comedy Motherland, as well as dramas The Hurt Unit, starring Melissa George and Ben McKenzie, and Judgement starring Sex/Life’s Sarah Shahi.

French TV sales broke an all-time record of €214.8 million ($230 million) in 2022, a 15.4% year-on rise, bolstered by premium TV series such as Newen’s procedural “Hpi,” Federation’s spy series “The Bureau” and Banijay’s period show “Marie Antoinette,” according to a study unveiled by the National Film Board and promotion org Unifrance.
The French org credited the spike in French TV exports to the end of the pandemic and the delivery of fresh content, as well as the return of in-person markets and business travel.
French linear channels still remain the main buyers of local TV content, accounting for 49% of sales, on par with 2021. But deals with streamers have played an increasingly significant role in recent years and represented 43% of all TV sales in 2022, compared with 33.5% in 2021 and 4.6% in 2013. As such, the U.S. was the leading export territory for French TV programs last year, partly thanks to U.S.

France’s TV sales market hit record levels thanks to deals such as ABC’s remake of crime drama High Intellectual Potential, as the U.S. became the biggest buyer of content from the European country.
Annual stats from the Cnc (National Center for Cinema and the Moving Image) and Unifrance released this afternoon show sales of French TV programs reached a record €214.8M ($232M) in 2022, an increase of 15.4% year-on-year and 4.7% higher than in 2017, the previous record year. U.S. sales made up nearly €20M of the total.
However, drops in pre-sales and co-production business led to an overall 15% fall in French TV exports. Pre-sales were down 50.3% and co-productions dipped 38.4% dip against a record 2021. This means the overall figure was €319.6M, down from €375.9M last year.

ABC dropped some big news Tuesday morning in the aftermath of canceling bubble dramas Big Sky, Alaska Daily, and The Company You Keep.
The Alphabet network renewed The Conners (for Season 6) and Not Dead Yet (for Season 2)!
On the unscripted side, ABC on Tuesday picked up America’s Funniest Home Videos (Season 34), American Idol (Season 7 on ABC and a 22nd season overall), The Bachelor (Season 28), Bachelor in Paradise (Season 9), Celebrity Wheel of Fortune (Season 4), Celebrity Jeopardy! (Season 2), and Shark Tank (Season 15).
Not landing renewals and, thus, remaining on the bubble are Home Economics and The Rookie: Feds.
No decision has been given for the move, but there's a good chance their futures will hinge on when the strike will conclude.
The flurry of pickups joins the previously renewed Grey’s Anatomy, Will Trent, Station 19, Abbott Elementary, The Good Doctor, and The Rookie.
ABC also recently renewed 9-1-1 after Fox canceled it after six seasons.

ABC Signature, a part of Disney Television Studios, has acquired English language adaptation rights to TF1’s hit detective show “Hip (High Intellectual Potential).”
The U.S. adaptation is currently in development, and a showrunner, writing team and cast will be announced at a later stage.
The original series, created by Alice Chegaray-Breugnot, Stéphane Carrié and Nicolas Jean, and starring Audrey Fleurot (“Intouchables”) and Mehdi Nebbou (“The Bureau”), has been one of the most successful French-language shows on French TV in the last 10 years.
“Hip” stars Fleurot as a super-smart mother of three who gets recruited as a consultant for the police thanks to her innate skills, in spite of the fact she has no background in detective work.
Produced by Mediawan-owned Septembre Productions, and Itinéraire Productions, a Ugc company, the series has been sold to more than 105 territories and has garnered more than 175 million views globally to date.
The U.S. adaptation is currently in development, and a showrunner, writing team and cast will be announced at a later stage.

Worldwide sales of French TV content set an all-time record last year despite severe challenges caused by the continued pandemic, according to the annual report on domestic programming exports by the National Center for Cinema and the Moving Image (Cnc) and film and TV promotional org Unifrance.
The Covid-19 crisis, the report notes, had many ramifications on international distribution of TV content that continued to be felt in 2021, including the absence and then gradual recovery of physical markets; an influx of projects in post-production; delays in the delivery of programs and difficulties in supplying new shows; and economic uncertainties among broadcasters.
Nevertheless, global sales, pre-sales and co-production investment in 2021 together reached €375.9 million (373 million), up 6 from a year earlier, according to the report, presented on Monday by Cécile Lacoue of the Cnc and Unifrance’s Sarah Hemar at the Unifrance Rendez-Vous TV market in Biarritz.
