Too smart for it's own good?
buiger16 February 2011
I just finished watching 'Eastwick' and I have to say I enjoyed it. It is beyond me why ABC decided to suddenly cancel this series. It is better than most of the stuff we have seen on television lately. This is a well made, intelligently scripted, interesting and original series. It is very well casted, the characters all have very good chemistry between them, the acting is good throughout, etc.

Not to say that it is a masterpiece, far from it (especially as the screenwriters go a little 'over the top' after the first 7-8 episodes), but it definitely is much better than the standard TV fare we are inundated with recently.

So why cancel it? Maybe because it is too smart for it's own good..., meaning the masses could not appreciate it...? Maybe...

A three way mix of "Charmed", "Desperate Housewives", and "Sex and the City".
blanbrn22 October 2009
"Eastwick" which is a spin off from the 1987 film "Witches of Eastwick" is actually a pretty good and quite interesting series. As it is based around a trio of witches who deal with their daily lives and work with the devil himself mister Van Horne. This series has pretty good chemistry among the characters it's trio of women Joanna(Lindsay Price "Lipstick Jungle" and "90210" alum)Roxie(the beautiful and attractive voluptuous Rebecca Romijn)and Kat(newcomer Jaime Ray Newman)all live and work in a beautiful New England town. They seem normal as they have children and date then all of a sudden Darryl Van Horne(Paul Gross) comes to town and the strange happenings and mystery enters their lives. They don't know what to make of him friend or foe. As with any tale involving witches this show has your typical magic of the women being able to see into the future, spell castings, and moving objects. And a real treat for viewers is how it's blended with sex appeal as so far many episodes has featured the witch gals in hot steamy love making scenes. And many times they look sexy as each have had scenes in sexy colored bras. Overall this series is a nice mixed bag of mystery and drama like sex appeal nothing great yet it's a watch to refresh the imagination.

Not charmed
Mike138819 May 2010
You can't compare it to Charmed, it's different. Eastwick has it's own aura that's very enjoyable to watch. Following the lives of 3 young women in the small town of Eastwick, this series contains drama, mystery, humor and sexy ladies for bonus. The characters are very likable especially Lindsay Price, she is very cute and gorgeous to watch. And another thing that caught my eyes, is how beautiful the set is, very nice design give it a small town spooky look.

It has some flaw, but definitely not a bad show at all, and was disappointed they cut it off. I enjoyed watching it, and maybe you will too.

A nice, fun pilot
arikathome6 June 2009
Looks like it will be a cute, easy watching show that should appeal to a wide range of family viewers. No big, deep messages or morals, nor roll in the aisles comedy, but keeps you smiling the whole way through. The three women work well together, their very different personalities contrasting and complementing just like the very different powers that they possess. Jaime Ray Newman is totally believable as the "doormat" housewife, and mother of five (and the favorite character of our five kids). Lindsay Price and Rebecca Romijn also fit their roles perfectly as the scatterbrained journalist and the earthy artist. We will tune in to see how this "dynamic trio" will come together to confront the ideally cast demon Paul Gross, and the small-town small-minded community that they are about to be unleashed upon.

Enjoyable show all these years later

Warning: Spoilers
I didn't even know this show existed but recently stumbled upon it which is why I think it was canceled all those years ago. It just didn't get the advertisement at the time because the show is decent today so for the time it was created it should have been more popular. Reading some of these reviews I can only say it is a science fiction show, it is not based on reality and far to many are making literal comparisons. If you stumble upon this show judge it for yourself and for what it is, a decent science fiction program.

Eastwick is easy, likable and fun! I'm hooked.
rtgal2314 October 2009
Yes, at times the story is predictable and some characters are cliché, but the show is straight-up fun to watch. There's plenty of "girls nights," embarrassing situations, fun flirtations and female empowerment. The writers have managed to developed interesting, likable leading female characters, each with their own quirks and unique perspectives.

The magic portrayed in each episode is subtle enough that it could possibly be seen as coincidence, which is a nice touch. My only qualm so far is that there aren't any well-developed and likable male leads. However, definitely give Eastwick a chance. At least watch the first few episodes, they are much better than the pilot. They just might get you hooked!!!!

started well but declined
SnoopyStyle24 August 2013
Kat Gardener (Jaime Ray Newman), Joanna Frankel (Lindsay Price), and Roxie Torcoletti (Rebecca Romijn) live in Eastwick, New England. A mysterious stranger gives these frustrated women witchy powers.

This show starts off well. The ladies are all good actors. All the pieces are there. It coasts along for several episodes very well. Somewhere along the line, the story spins out of control. By the end, I remember that it was a little tiresome to watch. It lasted only 13 episodes. I wasn't angered by the cancellation. It was very much expected by the end. I did wish they gave it a full season to see if they could straighten out the show.

Loving this pleasant surprise!
megan-2628 October 2009
I was skeptical when I first saw the previews. I thought, "This looks like The Witches of Eastwick." Which, it turned out, it was. I immediately wondered how on earth they would be able to drag the story out long enough to create a series. I'm also not the biggest fan of Rebecca Romijn, and wasn't sure if they would destroy the love I have for Jack Nicholson in the role of Darryl in the film - but I had nothing to worry about. Rebecca is hilarious and Paul Gross is brilliant as Darryl. Granted, my expectations were low for the pilot, and I was surprised at how much I loved it. These actors work well together, their relationships are believable, and some of the lines have made me laugh pretty hard - all adding up to a good time. I am thoroughly enjoying the series so far - and I hope it continues to be as good as it has been.

Only watched this because Jon Bernthal was in it. Characters are kinda cringey/annoying. Story line could have been a bit more exciting rather than just characters' love life/whether they get the guy. Pretty sure one of the leads raped a married man but that was never mentioned :/ Overall, alright, could have been worse

Promising Show
Zulu4213 November 2009
This is a pretty entertaining show, especially coming from a network known for throwing dull, whiny shows out there like Brothers and Sisters and it's latest clone, Modern Family. So naturally, I was pretty bummed to hear that ABC is canning this one. The story lines are great, often mixing serious supernatural situations with some humorous touches to lighten it up a bit and all of the actors all well cast (Paul Gross in particular is a funny slimy riot as Darryl Van Horn). I guess the only set back was the ridiculous 10 p.m.(EST) time-slot (aka "death slot") on Wednesday that ABC put this show into. It seems the network had little faith in this show to start with so they tanked it's chances of succeeding by showing it mid-week when most folks have to get up early the next day for work/school. Pity. I think if the CW or even NBC had this one, it would've had a chance.

Warning Episode 8 trivializes the rape of a man by one of the protagonists
isaac-esler9 August 2013
Warning: Spoilers
To anyone who may be thinking of watching Eastwick,

I won't presume to tell you what you should and should not watch, but I do with to warn you in advance. SPOILER. There is no reasonable excuse for the depiction of rape by Joanna Frankel (Lindsay Price) in episode 8 (Paint and Pleasure). In the afore mentioned episode Frankel forces (ie. against his will) a man to have sex with her in order to make herself feel better about herself. Later it is revealed that the man is is a happily married gay man, and her rape will likely result in the end of said marriage. The show treats this horrific event as light-hearted humor.

You have been warned

Loved it
ftljeff4028 September 2009
ABC has hit it out of the park with their new Wednesday night line up and Eastwick is a great way to cap it off. The three women are perfect in their roles and Paul Gross is so damn sexy, good and perhaps evil at the same time. I loved him in Due South and its great to see him back on TV again. For a pilot this was great, I loved the cast and cared about them by the end and the story lines can go anywhere. I can't wait for this Wednesday night. Good family fare and I hope ABC gives all of the new Wednesday night shows a chance to find their groove, loved Cougar Town and Modern Family as well. Finally some decent TV and no reality shows! I hate them!

I was sad that this show got cancelled until I saw the final few episodes.
Healing_Process23 June 2023
The show is exactly what you'd think it would be if you know your cable network Tv shows. It has the tropes and the humor where everyone involved has a nasty secret hiding. The casting isn't bad and the acting is nothing to write home about but also not jarring. Some of the over the top fawning or smitten comments can get tiresome or a little cringey, but I can understand that it is in the spirit of the Witches of Eastwick and a product of the times that the show was made.

I am not the one to watch shows like this so for it to keep my attention through its small town with secret charm was great. Unliked Charmed they take a long time to understand they really have powers and the show is more of dealing with social issues while inadvertently using their powers. (No Demon fighting, cult power usage).

However towards about episode 9 or 10 the show really started to fall off for me. I don't know if they knew the show was getting canceled beforehand but they seemed to just let everything go into overdrive and become overwhelming and lose the charm the show once had. Which does make me sad since Jerry O'Connell shows up in episode 12 and I like him as an actor.

All in all, the show is a cute little watch, nothing to write home about. It might be hard to find or get your hands on these days but it does show some potential for another show to come around like it. If you are looking for something similar the closest would be Witches of Eastend but that show takes an extremely different show compared to this one. In conclusion, middle of the road 5 out of 10.

Wow!
Damitlou23 September 2009
It has been a long time since I've given a show a try and fallen in love so quickly...before the first half hour finished! The cast works amazing together, they're very believable in their roles....and not just the main roles.

It's light and dark at the same time. My only complaint was that some of the commercial breaks weren't quite long enough for me to dart to the bathroom. I feared I might explode before the end, but I didn't want to miss even a second! I can easily see myself waiting on the edge of my seat after the finale. I'm already itchy for next week. I hope they can keep up the 'oomph' that the pilot has! Way to go, it's certainly a winner!

Not that good if you know the book or film
COB-327 September 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I've read the very good book and seen the pretty decent film and now have tried the not so good TV show Eastwick. It looks to be more targeted at a female audience and has echoes of Desperate Housewives in the initial female voice-over. It also seems to be missing a decent script and suffered from so-so acting. None of the main characters are particularly good. There are also far too many characters although this being TV means that some characters will probably get exposure and story time they don't merit. That said if people don't know either the book or the film then it's light probably passable but really not that good.

OMG What A Surprise , I am sooo hooked , A Must See
Soapista29 November 2009
Genere: Mystic Soap , Mysteria Prime Time Soap

Desperate Housewives meets Charmed , Like in Desperate Housewives they needed a bit to start the background build-up , like charmed they do not believe in mystic powers much less know they have them and little by little they start discovering there powers , and practicing them and getting a bit more powerful all the time.In episode 5 (Mooning and Crooning) they had a moon that unleashed there powers in episode 6 ( Bonfire & Betrayal ) and the start of more mysteries.

I can not believe how perfect this show is when it first started off , it was just like a perfect build-up to start a Desperate Housewives , now it has also added a lot of elements of charmed and we know how awesome those shows where , these show is full of mystery , dramedy , magic.

Let's hope that the powers that be , will not let this slip through the crack's and get it canceled , before it builds up an audience , if they give it a real chance , I have no doubt it will have the success of Desperate Housewives and Charmed.

The Best Mysteria prime time soap to come out since Desperate Housewives.

The Best Mystic prime time soap to come out since Lost and Charmed.

1st Episode
jozefczak23 September 2009
I liked it. It was fun, a little over the top at times ( a little desperate housewives at times if you know what I mean - and I am not a fan of desperate housewives ) but entertaining. I like the suspense of Van Horne. I like the women opening up and becoming more than boring or usual. I think if it continues to be more silly than true fantasy then it will not succeed. I certainly will lose interest. I mean when the husband falls off the hammock and blames her - it is not at all likely and therefore completely unbelievable. I wonder if the husband actor was actually conflicted having to repeat those lines "how did you do that". Please get better! I like the concept and story and hope the show will be worthy of all our attention. C'Mon Rebecca! Push for good writers!

Worst misogynistic poop ever.
kin82_1 June 2014
This show is condescending to women in multiple ways and blatantly rips off an old classic in which at least Jack Nicholson had the courtesy to worship the witches. The men talk incredible horrible about the women in the show, and they let it pass as if it's totally fine. Example: in the first minute of the pilot the husband of one of the witches calls another one of them a prostitute (well, he uses another word) when she is making out with her boyfriend, and his wife says nothing about it. This shows that the writers of this show are probably retarded and I am happy the show got canceled. Without all that s*it, it could've had potential. Kidding, it really didn't.

Why was it canceled?
marc-rayan218 June 2013
I enjoyed watching this TV show This show was really funny and had some good drama in it. Just when things started to get better and they were using their powers more, the show was cancelled, which was a huge mistake. Now there is no DVD and you cant buy it on iTunes, so the show has been forgotten, which it shouldn't be.:( WHY??

Great show
jill_wooden1 May 2017
Absolutely loved this series. Great characters, perfect small town life, and fun magick (without being over the top like some series). I could relate with all 3 of the main characters, and Hanna from PLL is one of the daughters - extra bonus! Sadly another show that was cancelled to soon!
