- Frustrated in his efforts to assassinate Cardinal Pole, Henry has his relatives executed while Cromwell supports a marriage to Anne of Cleves.
- A paranoid king has Pole's relations executed for treason as he looks for a new wife. Front runners are Christine,Duchess of Milan, who sensibly rejects Henry, having heard how vile he is, and Anne, Duchess of Cleves, who is Cromwell's favourite as she is a staunch Protestant. Oily Bishop Gardner splits on Protestant 'heretic' John Lambert, who is killed for his beliefs and who is a friend of Cromwell, whom the bishop tries, unsuccessfully, to incriminate.Based on Holborn's portraits of Anne and her sister, the king opts for Anne as his bride.—don @ minifie-1
- Henry gets over his grief after Jane's death in childbirth, but insists on a politically advantageous alliance with an attractive princess. Coming to terms with the emperor or the French king for a match from their courts for himself and/or princess Mary proves so difficult that Cromwell, who fears a relapse into Catholicism anyway, manages to get his candidate considered: truly protestant tiny Cleves, where duke William has two eligible sisters, but refuses to expose them to a 'meat market'. Reginald cardinal Pole having survived Sir Francis Bryan's Italian assassination mission, all Poles, the last Planatgent heirs in England, are executed without due trial, largely thanks to Edward Seymour.—KGF Vissers
- The King has agreed to take a new bride but his choices are limited. One is already promised to the King of Scotland and the other wisely rejects him, knowing him to be often married. Cromwell has been promoting one of two sisters to the Duke William of Cleves, Anne or Amelia. He feels a marriage to a Protestant would also be advantageous to England's reformation. The King's envoys have a great difficulty arranging to actually see either of the sisters however. The King is enforcing his new edicts on Church doctrine and orders the execution of John Lambert who has been preaching otherwise. After Reginald Pole's escape, he orders the arrest and execution of his mother and other members of the Pole family.—garykmcd
