Exclusive: We hear on good authority that Peacemaker star Danielle Brooks and Sebastian Eugene Hansen are joining the cast of Warner Bros and Legendary’s Minecraft movie.
Jared Hess is directing the Jason Momoa-starring feature take on the classic computer game. Brooks will play the role of Dawn, while Hansen will play the role of Henry.
Word is that production is looking to ramp up by the end of the month in New Zealand. Coming out of the actors strike, this is a production that has seen some of its potential castings pull away due to other obligations on TV.
Writing credits on Minecraft are still being determined, and the pic’s plot is under wraps. The Mojang sandbox video game is reportedly the highest-selling of all time with over 300 million copies sold and nearly 140 million monthly active players as of this year.

Just two weeks ago, Gold Derby’s odds did not predict “Dolly Parton’s Mountain Magic Christmas” would receive an Emmy nomination for Best TV Movie. But now, NBC and Peacock’s warm-hearted holiday telefilm has jumped up to the fourth-place position to win the category, behind likely challengers “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story,” “Prey” and “Fire Island” (see chart below). Just how much farther will producer/actress Dolly Parton climb in our racetrack odds before the Emmy nominations are announced on July 12?

Last year, four out of the five nominees for the Best TV Movie Emmy had their only nomination in that one category including the eventual winner, “Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers.” The only nominee to get recognized in another category was “Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas,” which scored a bid for Best Choreography for a Scripted Series. Hulu’s raunchy gay rom-com “Fire Island” will be looking to see if it can get into more than one category this year and there’s a solid chance it will nab multiple Emmy nominations.
A promising sign the film could get into the Best TV Movie category was its recent nomination at the Producer’s Guild of America Awards for Best Streamed or Televised Movie. There is much overlap between the voting memberships of the PGA and the TV academy, with two of last year’s guild nominees — “Robin Roberts Presents: Mahalia” and “Oslo...

“Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” could end up being a strong contender at this year’s Emmy Awards. It may sound, dare we say, weird, but The Roku Channel’s satirical biopic has been a consistent presence at the recent guild awards we saw handed out in the lead-up to the Oscars. Most of those guild awards were also recognizing work on television alongside features, and “Weird” not only managed to get in those categories but it also won several.
Most notably, “Weird” was able to pull out a victory at the Producer’s Guild of America Award for Best Streamed or Televised Movie. Notably, several films that were nominated in this category over the past couple of years would later get into the Best TV Movie category at the Emmys, including “Robin Roberts Presents: Mahalia,” “Oslo,” “Bad Education” and “Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square.” The latter two took...

As more and more media conglomerates shift their business models to subscription streaming platforms, the borderlines between “film” and “television” continue to dissolve. Methods of distribution are no longer concretely disparate as studio-made feature-length films now often debut exclusively on streaming sites and many TV creators describe their shows as “10-hour-long movies.” These newly permeable boundaries are rendering the taxonomies of awards season just plain weirder than ever.
Case in point: the utter grab bag that is the Emmy category for this year’s outstanding television movie, which has washed-up cartoon chipmunks competing against Auschwitz survivors. I suppose Emmy voters took the term “television” seriously, as most of the nominations center around cult-favorite TV wrap-ups and reboots. The lineup, quite frankly, is a bit bonkers.

The 2022 Producers Guild of America Awards took place on Saturday, March 19 at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles. The PGA has been one of the most reliable Oscar predictors around, thanks in large part to the fact that both the guild and the academy use the same voting system – the preferential ballot – to determine a Best Picture victor. Since 2009, PGA has forecast 9 of 12 Oscar champs.
This year, the guild overlapped with the academy on eight titles: “Belfast,” “Coda,” “Don’t Look Up,” “Dune,” “King Richard,” “Licorice Pizza,” “The Power of the Dog” and “West Side Story.” The PGA lineup was rounded out by “Being the Ricardos” and “tick, tick…Boom!,” which were swapped out for “Drive My Car” and “Nightmare Alley” at the Oscars.

A weekend trio of big wins for Netflix at the DGA, BAFTA and Critics Choice awards has given Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” the gas required to make it over the finish line. That’s if it can keep its closest competitors — “Belfast” from Kenneth Branagh and “Coda” from Siân Heder — at bay.
The Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures, which is the top prize from the PGA Awards, has been one of the most vital and telling precursors from all major guilds. In 2009, both the PGA and the Oscars switched the voting for their highest honor to a preferential ballot system. In terms of films perceived to be divisive with audiences, PGA has become the litmus test for whether or not those contenders have the goods to win.

Fantasia Barrino and Danielle Brooks were announced as the leads of “The Color Purple” movie musical Thursday during the ABC News special “Soul of a Nation Presents: Screen Queens Rising.”
“American Idol” Season 3 winner Fantasia will play Celie and “Orange Is the New Black” alum Danielle Brooks will play Sofia.
In 2021, Brooks starred as trailblazing gospel singer and civil rights activist Mahalia Jackson in Lifetime’s Emmy-nominated “Robin Roberts Presents: Mahalia.”
Fantasia played the role of Celie from 2007 to 2008 during the original Broadway run of “The Color Purple.” Brooks earned a Tony nod for playing Sofia in the Broadway revival, which ran from 2015 to 2017.

“Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” only won a handful of awards over the course of its two-season run on NBC, but it may be adding a few more trophies to the mantle with its new TV movie. “Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas,” which was released by The Roku Channel on Dec. 1, is nominated at the Critics Choice Awards for Best TV Movie, where it has emerged as an odds-on favorite to win.
“Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas” picks up where the Season 2 finale left off while also functioning as a joyful Christmas special unto itself. The film centers on Zoey (Jane Levy) as she must face the first holiday season without her father, Mitch (Peter Gallagher), and sets out to recapture the magic of Christmas past as a tribute to him. At the same time, Max (Skylar Astin) is learning what it means to have the same musical powers as Zoey, as teased in the final minutes of the finale.

The Critics Choice Awards stand out in part because the organization combines film and television categories into one night of mega-celebration. But not all elements are created equal on the road to gold.
Here, Variety breaks down what is notable about the television submission process and side of the ballot for this year’s awards, which take place Jan. 9 in Los Angeles. The ceremony will be simulcast on the CW and TBS.
Two Phase 1 Timelines
The Critics Choice Assn. (Cca) does not require formal submissions for film categories, but it does for the television categories. This year, that period was between Sept. 27 and Nov. 15. The nomination committee began deliberations on Nov. 16, and the TV nominations will be announced on Dec. 6. In contrast, film branch members of the organization won’t receive their nominating ballots until the next day, Dec. 7, with the deadline of midnight Pt Dec. 10 to return film ballots.

In order to address the future, sometimes you need to delve into the past. Most of this year’s Emmy-nominated TV movies do exactly that, exploring themes of love, faith and friendship in order to heal harmful past narratives and home in on the humanity of their characters.
When Eugene Ashe was penning the script for “Sylvie’s Love,” the love story of a saxophonist and a young woman, starring Tessa Thompson and Nnamdi Asomugha, for Amazon Prime Video, he specifically wanted to focus on the late 1950s and early 1960s, at the height of the civil rights movement. His goal was to highlight the humanity of Black leads during that time instead of the trauma so many other films have already tackled.

While the nominations for the Primetime Emmy Awards were announced weeks ago, the Television Academy just now released the list of nominated producers in the various program categories after the usual vetting process. With the ever-increasing number of actors who also produce, write and/or direct their own shows, there are expectedly a decent amount of recognizable names on the list. Many are also nominated in the acting categories, with their producing credit giving them yet another chance to win Emmy gold in September.
Best Comedy Series features a number of stars pulling double duty as producers, including Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross for “Black-ish,” Kaley Cuoco for “The Flight Attendant,” Michael Douglas for “The Kominsky Method,” and Jason Sudeikis and Brendan Hunt for “Ted Lasso.” All are nominated in the acting categories as well, while Sudeikis and Hunt are also double-nominated in Best Comedy Writing, bringing their individual totals up to four.

The pandemic year may have been made for limited series. While continuing drama and comedy series fought to get back into production, many 0f them missing this year’s eligibility period, limited series brought the star power and provided the virtual water cooler moments.
Emmy-contending shows in this field include one of the biggest TV sensations of the past year, Netflix’s “The Queen’s Gambit”; one of the most impactful shows of 2021, Amazon Prime’s “The Underground Railroad”; a rare example of true appointment television, HBO’s “Mare of Easttown”; Marvel’s celebrated takeover of TV, “Wandavision”; and critical darlings like HBO’s “I May Destroy You” and Amazon’s “Small Axe,” the latter of which was somewhat inexplicably deemed the year’s best film by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association.

This story about Kenny Leon and ‘Mahalia’ first appeared in the Limited Series & TV Movies issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
When the pandemic hit, the first thing Kenny Leon did was shut down the Tony-nominated Broadway revival of “A Soldier’s Play” starring David Allen Grier and Blair Underwood, which he’d been directing. He went back to his home in Atlanta, hunkered down and fell into a routine: He’d wake up in the morning, play the Mahalia Jackson music that had surrounded him as a child, pray for an hour, meditate and ride his Peloton bike.
And then, after seven weeks of that comforting schedule, he got a call from ABC newscaster Robin Roberts and Lifetime executive Tanya Lopez asking if he’d be interested in directing a movie about … Mahalia Jackson.
“I was like, ‘Do you have any idea that I’m waking up every day to Mahalia Jackson?...

“I didn’t know how long it was going to take, but I knew that I was destined to play her, and here we are,” says Danielle Brooks about playing legendary gospel singer Mahalia Jackson in “Robin Roberts Presents: Mahalia.” “So I think I just wanted to make sure that I did her justice and that she was honored, and I feel like we accomplished that.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Brooks above.
“There was a bit of intimidation” when it came to playing Jackson, but there was enough of that just from the circumstances surrounding the production. “At the time I’m also being a new mom. I had my one-year-old with me and in a pandemic in Vancouver … You don’t know if you can bring people out here, how many people can you shoot in a scene, and what are the restrictions of singing in a movie now?...

A confluence of factors, including Covid-19 and his own upbringing, brought director Kenny Leon to the biopic “Robin Roberts Presents: Mahalia.” “My mother was a gospel singer and we grew up in Florida. We went to church eight days a week and we would always hear Mahalia Jackson‘s music in our home.” He just happened to be taking comfort in the legendary gospel singer’s recordings during the pandemic when executive producer Robin Roberts and Lifetime Executive Vice President Tanya Lopez serendipitously came to him with the opportunity to tell her life story. We talked with Leon as part of our Gold Derby “Meet the Experts” directors panel. Watch our interview above.
