Hans, the strongest man in a petty German principality, always was cheerful and helpful, especially towards orphan princess Sarah, whom he even saved from the wicked witch in the forbidden forest. Just when he plans to leave having completed apprenticeship as smith, his delivery of a metal bed to the palace shows that now-teen rebel Sarah rudely refuses the fitting match her dutiful regent, old Friedhelm, invited: haughty duke Egbert. The latter plots with the witch, promising to keep villagers out of her woods if she helps him to the princess's hand and throne. She has her aerial spirit henchmen Dreher and Klipperer block the village well, planning for EGbert to heroically restore it, but Hans finds out and saves the day.
