The cast consists of actual high school students, with the film being shot entirely during their lunch breaks.
The film was made at New Roads School in Santa Monica, where Frederick Da is a teacher.
Jaya Harper (Jaya) is the daughter of Laura Dern. Director Frederic Da, in an interview with Filmmaker, said he had to get Dern's OK to include Jaya, who was a freshman and not in any of his classes. "That was kind of scary," he said, "because I was like, 'Wait, I'm going to have to ask Laura Dern for permission?' But Jaya was so adamant that I was like, 'Worst comes to worst, we'll just throw it out. This costs nothing. Let's try it.' And we tried a few scenes and, in my opinion, they were very strong. Ultimately, we showed it to Jaya's mom, she loved it and was super supportive and gave us all her blessings and was super excited when it got into Slamdance, so that was awesome."
