Gdh 559’s How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies, already the biggest film at the Thai box office in 2024, has now surpassed 2 million admissions in Indonesia, making it the second biggest Asian title at the Indonesian box office of all time.
The family drama hit the milestone on May 27 after 13 days on release through Indonesian distributor Falcon Pictures.
It is now the biggest Thai film, surpassing Thai-Korean horror The Medium’s 700,000 admissions in 2021, and the second biggest Asian film in Indonesia, only after Korean supernatural thriller Exhuma, which scored 2.6 million admissions earlier this year.

As much as I love horror films, it becomes slightly difficult to defend that taste when I have to watch films like this one. I do not mean to blindly hate The Rope Curse 3, though. I do appreciate some of the thought that’s gone behind the story; it’s the execution that is a complete fumble. I suppose many people assume anything goes when it comes to this genre. Add in some dark, moody atmospheric music, play with the light a little bit, and stuff the film with jump scares; honestly, I’d have tried it myself if it were that simple. The Rope Curse 3 follows Kuan-Yu, an aspiring parkour artist and son of a traditional exorcist family in Taiwan. One fine day, he gets caught up in some eerie complications when he’s dragged to a spooky hotel with his friend and cameraman. I must admit...

The recent deluge of top-tier genre fare emerging from Thailand has been a joyous sight to behold for horror fanatics as the country has positioned itself quite nicely in the past years as a major player in the market. From the found-footage supernatural nightmare in The Medium, ghost movies in Inhuman Kiss, Cracked, and Ghost Lab to the giant monster throwback Leio, the country's output has allowed them to rise significantly in the crowded Asian scene with plenty looking for Japan, South Korea, and to a lesser extent Indonesia and China for their film output. Now, fresh on the heels of his recent hit The Maid, Lee Thongkham teams up with Aqing Xu for a new monster movie called The Lake which is now available through Epic Pictures.

Muoi: The Curse Returns is a light sequel to the 2007 Korean-Vietnamese horror film Muoi: The Legend of a Portrait. Sixteen years later, the story fails to impress and gives a rather dated impression. Along with being quite predictable, this story of love, jealousy, sisterhood, and frights is way too old-school. Although the film makes many artistic choices that look interesting and make the film aesthetically pleasing to watch, other than looking like art, there’s nothing much to it. I was quite impressed by the first 5 minutes; that looked promising until the title appeared, but it doesn’t really go downhill from there; it just sluggishly moves from one plot point to the next with no real depth to any of it. For those wondering, it can be a standalone watch if you’re interested in looking at something pretty with a couple of gruesome scenes on a Sunday evening.

Filmmakers had called for a boycott over the rule change.
The organisers behind Thailand’s Suphannahong National Film Awards have dropped a rule that would effectively disqualify independent features from nomination following a major backlash.
A recent rule change by the National Federation of Motion Pictures and Contents Associations (Mpc) stated that theatrical releases in five regions of Thailand and a minimum of 50,000 cinema admissions were required for a film to be considered for nomination. These regions include Bangkok, Chiangmai (the north), Chonburi (the east), Nakhon Ratchasima (the northeast) and Nakhon Si Thammarat (the south).

Bloober Team made waves when the original Layers of Fear came out in 2016. The psychological horror game was released right at the start of the Survival Horror renaissance and presented players with a deeply haunting tale about a painter driven to madness as he attempts to create his “masterpiece.”
Wildly successful at the time, Bloober team went on to expand Layers of Fear into a successful series with multiple entries and eventually moved on to deliver more horror experiences with Blair Witch and The Medium. With the recent announcement that Bloober team is taking the reins on the Silent Hill 2 remake, the team has decided to go back to their breakout hit to close out a chapter of their history as they prepare to move forward. In a hands-off demonstration and Q&a, we were given a first look into what’s new in the world of Layers of Fear.

Understandably, Bloober Team’s upcoming Layers of Fear is getting overshadowed by the developer’s other big project in some fans’ eyes. It’s then probably a good idea that Bloober Team has released a new walkthrough video showing off the new mechanics and visual upgrades for Layers of Fear.
Featuring the original Layers of Fear, Layers of Fear 2, as well as all of the DLCs (including a new chapter entitled “The Final Note” that provides an alternate perspective on the first game’s storyline), the game will also introduce the never-before-told story of The Writer, which aims to tie each entry in the series together.
Bloober Team refers to Layers of Fear as a “tribute” to the fans of the series. “The game has shaped the way in which we strive to make the best horror experiences possible, and we’re hopeful that our community will enjoy what we...

A serene British countryside is rocked by a series of brutal murders with a common thread; each victim has been mutilated and drained of their blood. All eyes are on a nearby university and its resident eccentric, the mysterious Dr. Mallinger, an entomologist with a fascination for Death’s-head moths. His daughter Clare shares his interests but her concerns are more personal than academic—Clare is a shapeshifter, transformed into a deadly butterfly when her blood is up and romance is in the air.
Directed by Vernon Sewell, this not so thrilling thriller features Robert Flemyng as Mallinger, and Wanda Ventham as Clare, whose blank-faced beauty suggests an otherworldly nature or a general lack of enthusiasm for the project—if it’s the latter she’s...

Over the past few years, Thail cinema has started to break through the ranks of the international stranglehold on genre output that had previously benefitted Japan, South Korea, and most recently Indonesia as the top choices in terms of Asian Horror cinema. From the likes of Krasue: Inhuman Kiss, The Medium, and The Maid most prominently demonstrated, the country is starting to produce a slew of high-quality titles to make its case in the world which have mostly been relegated to localized-favored releases which have simply appealed quite well to international audiences. Now, former VFX artist Chalit Kraileadmongkol turns his hand to directing with his debut effort “Leio” which aims for a more international tone and flavor.

One of the most surprising television shows to emerge this season is Apple TV+’s “Severance,” a workplace thriller set in the mysterious Lumon Industries that subverts the audience’s expectations from its opening scene to the final shot of its climactic season finale. As Caroline Framke, chief television critic for Variety, observes, “‘Severance’ becomes the best kind of TV surprise: one that rewards early patience with a real knockout of a back half.” The series has proven to be a word of mouth hit, and has gained a ton of traction in the lead-up to Emmy nominations voting, which begins June 16.

While this year’s Best Comedy Supporting Actress Emmy Awards lineup could match last year’s exactly, the corresponding drama one is guaranteed to be completely different. 2021 winner Gillian Anderson and her “The Crown” costars Helena Bonham Carter and Emerald Fennell have all exited the series, which did not air new episodes during the current eligibility window anyway. Aunjanue Ellis’s “Lovecraft Country” concluded in 2020, and “The Handmaid’s Tale,” for which Madeline Brewer, Ann Dowd, Yvonne Strahovski, and Samira Wiley were all nominated last year, also did not return in time to contend at this year’s Emmys.

As the pandemic rages into its second year, few genres were shunted as the horror genre was as the dearth of releases is evident in a series of lower-key this year compared to last year. While blockbuster releases still emerged, it was from unexpected sources as Thailand, with a double-shot of impressive releases since “The Medium” and “The Maid” arrived with great fanfare. Indonesia followed suit as Timo Tjahjanto provided one of the finest anthology segments ever created and actor Cornelio Sunny stepped behind the camera for a fine debut. South Korea and Japan continued with great genre content as per usual while Taiwan offered another stellar effort in their modern output, leaving other countries to fill out the slots as titles from India, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Hong Kong rounded out a fine selection of films for the year.

Hamaguchi Ryusuke’s “Drive My Car,” Japan’s entry to the Academy Awards’ international category, looks to be the odds on favorite from Asia to win the category.
The drama with a theater world backdrop follows the trajectory of South Korean four-statuette winner “Parasite” in that it began its winning ways at Cannes and is festooned with awards en route to the Oscars. “Parasite” won the Palme d’Or, which “Drive My Car” did not, with that honor this year going to Julia Ducournau’s “Titane,” which became France’s entry to the category. It also recently won at the New York Film Critics Circle.
Nevertheless, “Drive My Car” won three awards at Cannes and has the added advantage of U.S. distribution, where it is currently on theatrical release.
The 2008 win for Takita Yojiro’s “Departures” remains Japan’s only win since the category was made competitive in 1956.

While I understand why some have called 2021 a “slow” year for video games (the challenges of developing during the Covid-19 pandemic delayed numerous games and clearly impacted the quality of others), a quick look at the sheer number of underrated games that managed to sneak under the radar this year reveals how deep the modern gaming industry really is.
While it’s understanable that the average gamer doesn’t have nearly enough time or money to play every game they might enjoy even during a “slow” year, there’s alawys been something sad about the idea that there are games out there that you might absolutely fall in love with but may never even hear about simply becasue there is only so much time in the day.
There are dozens of such games that deserve a bigger share of the spotlight than they ultimately got, but these are 15 of the...

In 2004, Banjong Pisanthanakun and then-collaborator Parkpoom Wongpoom kickstarted their directorial careers with “Shutter,” a supernatural thriller so effective it’s been remade (albeit to lesser effect) abroad three times to date. Less likely to translate that widely is Pisanthanakun’s latest solo effort, “The Medium.” Marking his return to straight horror after a couple romances and one more comedically slanted genre film (“Pee Mak”), this demonic possession saga is too thoroughly Thai in milieu and details to risk being just another derivative of “The Exorcist.”
Still, cultural specificity only brings so much freshness to an overlong tale that ultimately trades in too many familiar tropes, from the victim’s evil-grinning, black-gunk-spewing

Diane Ademu-John is the new showrunner for HBO Max's upcoming "Dune" spinoff TV series. She replaces Jon Spaihts, who left the project at the end of 2019 in order to focus on writing the sequel to Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming big screen adaptation of Frank Herbert's epic.
Based on Herbert’s “Dune” novel series, “Dune: The Sisterhood” explores the world of the book through the eyes of a mysterious order of women known as the Bene Gesserit. Given extraordinary abilities by their mastery of the body and the mind, the Bene Gesserit expertly weaves through the feudal politics and intrigue of The Imperium, pursuing plans of their own that will ultimately lead them to the enigmatic planet Arrakis, known to its inhabitants as Dune.
The series was ordered back in 2019.
Spaihts remains as an executive producer on the series, which is from Legendary TV. Villeneuve is set to direct the pilot.

Recently released horror film “The Medium” won the top prize at the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BiFan), which wrapped in South Korea on Sunday. The event, which ran July 8-18, 2021 was the festival’s second year as a hybrid, with both in-person and online components.

“Black Widow” held on to top spot at the South Korean box office despite a challenge from the new release of local horror film “The Medium.” New release, “Space Jam: A New Legacy” made no impact.
The Disney-Marvel film saw weekend earnings of $4.09 million, a drop of 54% compared with the previous session. Since release on July 7, it has accumulated $19.2 million, putting it within $25,000 of the 2021 record currently enjoyed by “F9.”
“The Medium,” a highly-anticipated horror film that involves Thai director Banjong Pisanthanakun and Korean producer-director Na Hong-jin (“The Chaser”), came second over the weekend, earning $2.82 million.
The film was launched on Wednesday and had started brightly, initially beating “Black Widow.” Over five days it has accumulated $5.05 million.
While their screen counts were not hugely dissimilar – “Black Widow” had 1,577, against 1,402 for “The Medium” – the American film accounted for 48% of the nationwide box office market, compared with just 33% for “The Medium.”
