When it comes to horror television, I think it’s safe to say that Mike Flanagan has cornered the recent Netflix market with five fantastic series on the streamer. But with great influence comes great debates about which show of the five is the best. Ultimately, that honor should go to Midnight Mass, Flanagan’s 2021 series about a small island that is rocked by a religious revival with deadly consequences. Yes, The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, The Midnight Club, and last year’s The Fall of the House of Usher are all great in their own right, particularly Hill House, but there is just something so special about Midnight Mass, which out of the Netflix TV mix is Flanagan’s only fully original work. While Hill House set a high bar as Flanagan’s freshman TV outing, Midnight Mass takes the elements fans have come...

When the character Riri Williams (played by Dominique Thorne) made her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut back in 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the idea was that we’d be seeing the character again the following year in her own six-episode Disney+ show Ironheart… but 2023 came and went without Ironheart, and the show still doesn’t have an official premiere date. It is expected to come along sometime in 2025, and a trailer was recently shown at the D23 event. It will be a while before we get to see the show’s characters in action, but during a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, cast member Anthony Ramos took a moment to talk about the character he plays in the series: Parker Robbins, a.k.a. The Hood.
Ramos said, “I saw a trailer at D23. We walked onstage, and they played this new trailer of Ironheart, and it was my first time seeing it.

Where are all my horror fans? Netflix recently added 10 horror films to its platform on the first of August. While I recommend checking out each new release, the one that should be at the top of your watchlist is the 2024 supernatural horror film Tarot. This movie is criminally underrated, in my opinion, when it really deserves all the love and attention.
Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg (The Expendables 4) wrote and directed Tarot, making it their feature film directorial debuts. Like most movies nowadays, Tarot is based on another piece of work. It's based on Nicholas Adams' 1992 novel Horrorscope. Although panned by critics, the horror flick still managed to be a box-office success, grossing $49 million worldwide against a budget of $8 million.
Here's how I see it. It's okay to read critic reviews but don't let what someone else has said and their opinions deter you from watching a movie. Who knows,...

Batman: Caped Crusader, the latest animated interpretation of DC’s Dark Knight, embraces the pulpy horror theatrics of EC Comics.
“And you don’t know how to catch a ghost.”
“Before today, I didn’t believe they existed.”
One of superhero media’s greatest luxuries is that it’s an exaggerated genre that frequently toes the line with other styles of story. It’s not unusual for a superhero series to become a political thriller, fantastical rom-com, or epic spaghetti western based on the specific characters who are in play. Batman, in particular, is a classic DC Comics character who’s frequently steeped in dark ideas and he’s someone who’s a natural fit for the horror genre. Each cinematic Batman offering features some degree of horror, even the neon-colored Joel Schumacher entries, and there is no shortage of horror-blending comic stories between Batman: Night Cries, Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth,...

Scare Tactics, the hidden camera horror comedy show, is coming back with Jordan Peele devising the pranks.
The show, which previously ran for five seasons and aired on NBCUniversal’s Syfy, has been greenlit by USA Network to launch later this fall.
Peele and his Monkeypaw Productions are producing alongside Universal Television Alternative Studios (Utas), the unscripted arm of the studio where the Get Out and Nope filmmaker has an overall TV deal.
Scare Tactics will turn unsuspecting individuals into the main characters of their very own horror movies. Set up by their friends and family, these unwitting participants are put in twisted scenarios with fully immersive stories that blur the lines of reality, horror and comedy as they navigate one unreal decision after another.
The series was originally produced by Scott Hallock, who is exec producing via his Wmti Productions, which owns the format. Peele, Win Rosenfeld and Jamal Watson executive produce for Monkeypaw.

One door closes, another opens. Just the other day, we heard that filmmaker Mike Flanagan was done with something: he doesn’t want to send any more bleak, hopeless endings into the world. And now, we hear that he has started something: a podcast called Directors Commentary, which is part of the newly launched SpectreVision Radio network. SpectreVision Radio is the podcast branch of the SpectreVision production company, headed up by Elijah Wood, Daniel Noah, and Lawrence Ingle. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that SpectreVision Radio is set to be a home for podcasts focused on film, music and the arts, in addition to esoteric subjects including the paranormal and surprising history.
Podcasts on the network will include The Spiel, which is hosted by Scott Wampler and Eric Vespe (they recorded 12 episodes before Wampler passed away unexpectedly earlier this year); Visitations, from SpectreVision co-founders Wood and Noah; and shows...

Filmmaker Mike Flanagan has written some dark, disturbing endings in his career… but we shouldn’t expect to see much of that from him in the future. During a recent interview with actress Katee Sackhoff for the Sackhoff Show podcast, Flanagan explained why he’s done with bleak, hopeless endings.
Flanagan told Sackhoff (with thanks to Cbr for the transcription), “A lot of the stuff I was writing had really bleak endings and very hopeless endings. It pivots right after [Hill House] and everything I’ve done since then doesn’t have that.” Sackhoff asked if that’s the influence of his wife Kate Siegel coming through, and Flanagan said, “I think in a lot of ways it is. The upcoming film The Life of Chuck is the latest Stephen King adaptation from Mike Flanagan, who has previously been at the helm of the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep (and is also developing a series adaptation of The Dark Tower for Amazon Studios) – but it is not a horror movie. We’ve previously heard cast member David Dastmalchian (Late Night with the Devil) describe the film as a beautiful, heartfelt drama – and now Dastmalchian’s co-star Karen Gillan (Guardians of the Galaxy) has told Movieweb that The Life of Chuck is a beautiful masterpiece.

If anyone still thought there was such a thing as a video game adaptation curse back in 2021, then "Arcane" put the final nail in the concept's coffin. Riot Games and Studio Fortiche's adaptation of the hugely popular video game "League of Legends" was not just a phenomenal translation of the games' world and mythos, but a perfect season of television, period. It was a visually stunning animated epic with a poignant story about two sisters divided by war, featuring some of the most striking animation in either film or television, thrilling music, and a vibrant use of color and lighting.

Not so long ago, we reported that the upcoming Blumhouse and Universal planned remake of The Exorcist had seemingly found its director, as renowned genre filmmaker Mike Flanagan was in talks to direct the movie. This news broke not long after David Gordon Green, who directed last year’s reboot film The Exorcist: Believer, left the project altogether. At the time, the studios announced a big $400-million trilogy, but after Green’s movie failed completely, they were looking for a change of direction. Now, we can confirm both that Flanagan has signed on to direct the next movie, and that the studios have given up on their original idea.
Namely, the trilogy plan was completely scrapped and Flanagan will be given more creative freedom to do what he wants, and from what we can gather, the series is heading into completely new territory, as Flanagan doesn’t really intend to...

After being blown away by the Prime Video adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s novel Daisy Jones & The Six, I decided to circle back and read the author’s debut novel, the “tragic love story” drama Forever, Interrupted… and as the story went on, I became more and more surprised that it hadn’t yet received an adaptation of some sort. It seemed ready to be brought to the screen as a heartbreaking and heartwarming movie or TV show, with solid roles for two lead actresses. Well, now it’s getting its adaptation. Glamour reports (via Deadline) that Margaret Qualley (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) and Laura Dern (Jurassic Park) are set to star in a limited series adaptation of Forever, Interrupted that’s coming our way from A24 and the Netflix streaming service.

Before Universal Pictures even spent a single penny on producing its planned "Exorcist" trilogy, the studio had already shelled out an eye-watering $400 million for the rights to make the trilogy. So, when David Gordon Green's "The Exorcist: Believer" was widely panned in reviews and grossed $136.2 million worldwide, there was a change of plans.
We already knew that Green wouldn't be returning to direct the next sequel, and we recently learned that beloved modern horror maestro Mike Flanagan ("The Haunting of Hill House") had been recruited to replace him. Now, Morgan Creek and Blumhouse have put out a press release to emphasize that the trilogy concept is caput. Flanagan's movie will not be a sequel to "The Exorcist: Believer," but a "radical new take" on the source material.
By the sounds of it, Flanagan came in with a strong pitch. "I immediately responded to Mike's new take on the world...

Director and showrunner Mike Flanagan has always been a "listener" when understanding the human condition.
While his genre of choice has been horror, and primarily psychological horror at that, he has made a career out of listening to what people have to say about religion, guilt, insanity, and death.
He is as much a spiritual guru as a movie director.
Even from his early works, like Absentia and Oculus, one could see Flanagan as a visionary and an interactive designer, determined to deliver the audience an experience they crafted, a game, a nightmare they could vicariously live through archetypical characters.
He became even more crowd-pleaser with his first two ghostly mini-series, The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor.
These epic haunted tales blurred the lines between guilt and fear.

Here's a new project announcements that just gets better and better as it goes on: Laura Dern and Margaret Qualley are set to star in an A24-produced Netflix limited series adaptation of Daisy Jones & The Six author Taylor Jenkins Reid's Forever, Interrupted, with Yellowjackets co-producer/writer Julia Bicknell attached as writer-showrunner. That's quite the team-up.
As reported by Deadline, the series will be a tender tale of love and loss told across dual timelines. Forever, Interrupted centres around Elsie (Qualley), whose whirlwind romance with lover Ben is cut cruelly short when, just nine days after having gotten married and found their happily ever after, Ben unexpectedly dies. In the aftermath of her husband's passing, Elsie finds herself coming face-to-face with her mother-in-law Susan (Dern), who doesn't even know she exists. As the narrative unfolds, recollecting Elsie and Ben's meeting in the past and Elsie and Susan's frosty-yet-soon-thawing relationship in the present,...

Franchise icon Heather Langenkamp has made it no secret over the years that she’d love to play Nancy Thompson in another A Nightmare on Elm Street movie. Langenkamp of course played the fan favorite role in the original classic as well as sequel Dream Warriors, and she later returned to the franchise for the final time as herself in Wes Craven’s New Nightmare.
Is it time for a legacy sequel, now that’s it been 40 years since the franchise debuted?
Speaking at a recent Q&a event hosted by Nightmare on Film Street, Heather Langenkamp made it clear that her interest in playing the role one more time hasn’t waned over the years.
“In my imagination, I have several legacy sequels happening at the same time,” Langenkamp told the crowd of Elm Street fans. “She’s a great character. How could you say no?”

There has been much pessimism floating around regarding this past weekend's box office. I myself have tossed some of that pessimism into the void. Much of that has to do with the fact that the summer movie season kicked off with "The Fall Guy" opening to a wildly disappointing $28.5 million, marking the worst start to summer in more than 20 years. Far less ink has been spilled regarding Sony's new horror movie "Tarot," which also opened over the weekend and snuck into the top five on the domestic charts with a $6.5 million debut. At first glance, it's not a good look for a movie from a major studio opening on more than 3,100 screens across North America. However, this might actually end up being a sneaky little hit.
"Tarot" also pulled in $3.7 million internationally, giving it a $10.2 million global start. Again, that number isn't going to break any records. It's not...

Mike Flanagan, the prolific filmmaker behind “The Haunting of Hill House,” “Doctor Sleep” and “The Fall of the House of Usher,” is in talks to direct “The Exorcist” sequel for Universal and Blumhouse, an individual with knowledge of the situation told TheWrap. The source stressed it’s early days and a deal is far from guaranteed, but there is interest from both sides and Flanagan has a take on the material.
Universal directed TheWrap’s inquiry to Blumhouse, who had no comment.
In 2021, Universal shelled out $400 million for the rights to the “Exorcist” franchise and planned a trilogy of films, but director and cowriter David Gordon Green exited the series after directing last year’s “The Exorcist: Believer,” despite having mapped out the next two films.

It seems that a new The Exorcist movie is in the works and no, Russell Crowe is not attached to play the priest who will be doing the exorcising in the movie. But, the upcoming Blumhouse and Universal horror film has seemingly found its director after David Gordon Green, who directed last year’s reboot film The Exorcist: Believer, left the project altogether. As things stand now, renowned genre filmmaker Mike Flanagan is in talks to direct the next Exorcist movie, and based on his earlier work, this might be a hit for the two studios.
Not much is known about the project, as it is still in the early production phases, but we know that the two companies plan to make two additional films, completing the sequel (reboot) trilogy. In fact, Green’s The Exorcist: Deceiver was supposed to come out on April 18, 2025, but after Green’s exit, the movie was postponed indefinitely.

"The Exorcist" franchise might soon receive a new lease on life, courtesy of one of the most prolific horror filmmakers around. After last year's "The Exorcist: Believer" failed to take off either among critics or at the box office, it seemed that Universal Pictures might have to go back to the drawing board before pushing forward with their grand plans for subsequent movies about innocent kids getting possessed by malevolent demons. Those plans took even more of a hit when "Halloween" director David Gordon Green exorcised himself from the series, resulting in the sequel "The Exorcist: Deceiver" getting pushed back indefinitely as the studio searched for another filmmaker.
That search seems to be approaching the finish line, however, and fans will undoubtedly be happy with the No. 1 choice. Late last night, Deadline broke the news that Mike Flanagan is currently in talks to direct the next installment of "The Exorcist" franchise.

One of last fall’s biggest flops was David Gordon Greene’s limp attempt to revive the “Exorcist” franchise for Blumhouse and Universal. “The Exorcist: Believer” was met with intense pans and a worldwide gross of $137 million. That number may not sound so bad at first until you remember that the rights to the franchise alone cost $400 million. While there have been several sequels (plus a double-prequel) to “The Exorcist” since the groundbreaking original that won Oscars for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Sound (plus seven other nominations including Best Picture), this was the first one to bring Ellen Burstyn back into the world of ancient evils and demonic possession.
Green’s departure from the series was announced in January, and current horror mainstay Mike Flanagan is looking like he will step in, as per a report in Deadline.

Universal Pictures and Peacock forked over an amount somewhere in the range of $400 million to acquire the rights to distribute a trilogy of sequels to the 1973 classic The Exorcist, which we’re going to another collaboration between Blumhouse Productions and director David Gordon Green (who recently delivered a trilogy of Halloween sequels), they were definitely expecting the first entry in the new trilogy to go over better with audiences than The Exorcist: Believer did when it was released last October. (You can read our 4/10 review Here.) The box office numbers were okay, the movie pulled in $137 million on a $30 million budget, but Universal was hoping for a lot better than “okay,” and viewer reactions were largely negative. Soon after the release of Believer, we heard that Universal and Blumhouse still intended to carry out the trilogy, but the follow-ups would be reworked – and Green had left the project. Now it...

Renowned genre filmmaker Mike Flanagan (The Life of Chuck) is in talks to direct the next Exorcist film for Blumhouse and Universal Pictures, sources have confirmed to Deadline.
Uni and Blumhouse declined comment. Should a deal make, Flanagan would take over the reins from David Gordon Green, who exited the rebooted franchise back in January. Universal and Blumhouse bought rights to The Exorcist from Morgan Creek back in July 2021 for $400M, and while the plan at that point was for at least three new films to be made, it’s unclear whether Flanagan would be on for more than one.
Starring Leslie Odom Jr. as well as franchise veteran Ellen Burstyn, trilogy launcher The Exorcist: Believer fell beneath expectations when it opened to a soft $26.4M domestic last October, going on to gross $65.5M U.S./Canada, $136.2M WW.

“Tarot” has the makings of a classic sleepover horror movie, fine-tuned for an astrology-obsessed Gen Z. When a group of friends accidentally read their horoscopes with the help of a cursed set of Tarot cards, scary symbols like “The Magician” and “The High Priestess” come to life and start haunting the group. Blending elements of classic supernatural slashers and the “Final Destination” movies, the film stars a game group of twentysomethings, including Harriet Slater, Jacob Batalon and Larsen Thompson.

Nearly three years have gone by since Chris Stuckmann, a movie critic and author with a channel on YouTube that has over 2 million subscribers, signed a deal with Paper Street Pictures to write and direct the mystery horror film Shelby Oaks. Flanagan has let it be known that this isn’t horror, and cast member David Dastmalchian has said the same in a new interview with Gizmodo, describing the film and elements in it as beautiful and heartbreaking.
Dastmalchian, who was also in the recent King adaptation The Boogeyman, said (with thanks to Coming Soon for the transcription), “It’s beautiful. You think, ‘Oh, Mike Flanagan, Stephen King, this thing’s going to just be the most horrifying, terrifying, thing you’ve ever seen.’ [But] it is so beautifully rendered, heartfelt, the drama, the performances. When the character Riri Williams (played by Dominique Thorne) made her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut back in 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the idea was that we’d be seeing the character again the following year in her own Disney+ show Ironheart… but 2023 came and went without Ironheart, and the show still doesn’t have an official premiere date. This has caused some fans to speculate that Marvel and Disney+ might have decided to scrap Ironheart, along with the series Wonder Man, which had Yahya Abdul-Mateen II taking on the role of the title character, who is also known as Simon Williams and hasn’t been seen in the MCU yet. But no, Ironheart and Wonder Man are not being scrapped, and in a new interview with Agents of Fandom, Marvel Studios’ Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation Brad Winderbaum described the shows as spectacular, amazing, and different.

In recent years, Netflix has picked up something of a reputation for cancelling shows in their early stages. In recent years, their live-action Cowboy Bebop, Mike Flanagan spook-fest The Midnight Club, and ghost-busting YA drama Lockwood & Co are among those shows to have been cut down after a single season. But the streamer is keen – possibly keener than ever, in a week that’s seen The Brothers Sun confirmed for the Netflix scrap pile – to stress to Avatar: The Last Airbender fans that their live-action take on the Nickelodeon show isn’t going anywhere. Season 1 has evidently been a hit – and so Season 2 and Season 3 will both be in the works.
As revealed on social media, there’ll be more from Aang and friends down the line – with a poster teasing Earth and Fire emblems for Seasons 2 and 3, respectively. The plan seems to be that Season 3 will mark the final run of the show,...
