The needle and syringe given to Mrs Reynolds are not those used for insulin. It was a 23G 1.26" needle on at least a 2ml syringe. Insulin has special (26G) needles and syringes depending on the strength of insulin.
There is a discussion about diabetics trying to decide if they should have Lasik surgery. There is no special need or restrictions on diabetics for Lasik and no urgent need to get this procedure. It is likely the writers meant laser surgery to prevent macular bleeding that could cause blindness (diabetic retinopathy). This is not related in any way to Lasik surgery.
