Fantastic.

Absolutely love that this episode pointed out the folly of New York's new laws that force prosecutors to disclose the names and addresses of witnesses to defendants right away, giving the defendants (who are almost released immediately as NY also ended most cash bail for felons) time to find the witnesses who are planning to testify against them, and them persuade them otherwise or simply kill them, as happened in the opening scene of this episode.

Nice recovery

I rarely rate episodes or shows a 10. That's a high bar reserved only for the best. My actual rating for the episode itself is an 8.5 to 9. The top-up to the 10 comes for two reasons: a great recovery from last week's terrible episode and that Whoopi wasn't part of this episode.

Way to ruin a great episode

The plot involving Danny's pursuit of a drug dealer and his lawyer is definitely a ten. Very creative twists and a satisfying conclusion. But I knew they were going to screw it all up with Erin's competition for the job of DA. Sadly, it's all too realistic. A woman works hard, does brilliant work even under a corrupt boss and what's her reward? They do an obvious EEO hire from out of state. That's the only conclusion the viewer can draw when they give no compelling reason for her being selected. After this many seasons it gets old when Erin makes no headway in her career despite all of her great work. Maybe that's the producers message for white women- don't bother working extra hard, you don't check ALL of the boxes anymore.

Horrible start kills the whole episode! DOA.

Warning: Spoilers
The goal is to present a conflict of if Joe Hill is going to be exposed to all of New York City as a member of the Reagan family, specifically as the Commissioner's grandson and all of the problems it will create for him and the rest of family. I get it and it's a great idea. It's a shame they didn't hire a decent writer for it.

He's shown at the beginning as being a hero, in (not surprisingly) the very best Reagan tradition by rescuing a child from a kidnapping by a likely child molester. However the whole rescue is completely absurd and unbelievable! Joe Hill is clearly seen in the background at the coffee shop watching as the little girl is being lured away by the bad guy, obviously knows what's happening (he's watching very, very intently), but he doesn't act until well after the abduction has taken place, the mother is screaming and the van is already squealing away before he decides to act? Huh? Who wrote that garbage! Why didn't he stop it BEFORE the girl was taken out! Because of insulting writing!

Then, when the van has already left, he runs across an open lot at Olympic speed and positions himself directly in front of a speeding vehicle and we're supposed to believe it just screams to a stop at the very last second because his weapon is drawn? BULL! This is a desperate criminal who has just kidnapped a child, has no idea who this guy in front of him is AND he's pointing a gun at him. There's not a chance he's going to stop. He'd have kept on and have run Det Hill over! There's no way he'd have hesitated a second. Besides in the time frame presented he wouldn't have had a chance to even SEE him jump in front of his van in the first place, let alone see a weapon or even stop!

This opening was written and directed so badly that it would have been Joe Hill's last appearance on the show...except as the rest of the family attending his funeral and a few flashbacks.

Embarrassingly badly written! Kills the whole rest of the episode.
