Asian audiences are increasingly turning to homegrown content in their streaming choices. Asian titles powering 80% of premium VOD engagement and customer acquisition, according to new research from research and consultancy firm Media Partners Asia.
“The Rise of Asian Content” is based on passive tracking of 40,000 users by sister company Ampd in nine major Asian markets – Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Thailand – over 15 months between Jan. 2023 and March 2024.
“Content originating from Korea, Japan, China, Indonesia and Thailand drives 70-75% of premium VOD engagement, acquisition and hits in Asia,” said MPA lead analyst Dhivya T.
“While the impact and travelability of K-dramas and anime is well-established, Chinese, Thai and Indonesian content are also emerging as important categories. Modern Chinese dramas are increasingly taking on K-drama-like storylines and themes, appealing to wider audiences through platforms like Netflix and Viu, relative to traditional Chinese costume fantasy dramas, which remain popular in Thailand and Taiwan.

South Korea is known globally for its web series, movies and K-pop, with content including Squid Game and Parasite and groups like BTS and Blackpink becoming household names internationally. But there is another Korean cultural export – webtoons and their associated IP – that is starting to have an impact, not just in Korea, but around the world.
Webtoons are comics that have been designed specifically for mobile phones. Unlike Western comics and Japanese manga, they’re composed of single panels arranged vertically so that they can be easily scrolled through with one hand while you’re using the other to hang off the strap of your local commuter train.
Originating on the platforms of two Korean tech giants, Daum (which was later absorbed into Kakao) and Naver, in the early 2000s, the format is already huge across Asia and has become an invaluable source of IP for the region’s booming streaming industry.

It would be fair conclusion to say that 2021 was a successful year for K-Dramas. The year, through many cable and national broadcasting networks, the country’s tv industry released many successful series. Streaming giant Netflix too came in strong, buying world-wide distribution rights to many popular titles, while also doubling down on their own original productions, investing heavily into content from the country and increasing output too, to the point of releasing a new K-Drama almost every month in the second half of last year. Of course, the success of a number of these shows is now well-known, but other streaming services like iQiyi, Viki etc. also played an important part in getting several Korean series out to the wider worldwide audience, resulting in a strong year for shows of various genres.
Without further ado, here is the list of the 20 best K-Dramas of 2021, in descending order.
