Focus Features has acquired worldwide rights to Carey Mulligan comedy “The Ballad of Wallis Island,” Variety can confirm exclusively.
They will release the film in the U.S. while Universal Pictures International is handling global distribution.
The film, which was previously titled “One For The Money,” is directed by James Griffiths (“Cuban Fury”) and produced by Steve Coogan’s Baby Cow productions (“Philomena”).
The screenplay was written by Tom Basden (“After Life”) and Tim Key (“Great Expectations”), who also star in the film alongside Sian Clifford (“Fleabag”) and Akemnji Ndifornyen (“Famalam”).
“The Ballad of Wallis Island” tells the story of Charles (played by Key), an eccentric lottery winner who tries to reunite his favorite musical duo Mortimer-McGwyer (Mulligan and Basden) despite the fact they split up many years ago. Making things even more awkward, the musicians – Nell Mortimer and Herb McGwyer — were also once romantically involved with each other a la Sonny and Cher.

The BAFTAs have a soft spot for home-grown talent. Earlier this year, “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande” scored four bids at the British Academy Film Awards, including Best Actor (Daryl McCormack) and Best Actress (Emma Thompson). Before that, in 2022, Adeel Akhtar snuck into the Best Actor lineup for “Ali & Ava” and Joanna Scanlan won Best Actress for “After Love.”
This pattern of Brits recognizing Brits could bode well for Daniel Kaluuya this year, who makes his directorial debut with the new Netflix drama “The Kitchen.” The film depicts a dystopian London in which all social housing has been eliminated. The focus in the story are the residents of The Kitchen, a community that refuses to leave their homes despite their struggles. At the heart of the film is Kane Robinson‘s (also known as Kano) Izi, who takes Jedaiah Bannerman‘s young boy under his wing and tries...

There are quite a few movies with two things that I wouldn’t put together normally that get thrust into each other for our entertainment. Mega Shark Vs Giant Octopus, Ninjas vs Zombies, Cowboys vs Vampires (yes these are all actual movies that I have seen) and now the apocalypse and clowns.
Like many movies with crazy-sounding themes, the title alone does get your attention but the story itself is actually as simple as it could be. An electrical and technological blackout has hit Ireland and now anarchy and chaos have hit the country. A group of mostly failed clowns have ended up together travelling the country and trying to survive. But, it might give them one last shot at the big time.

It might be counterintuitive to suggest that film festivals are lonely places. What about the crowds, all the social gatherings and random conversations with strangers, you might rightfully ask. But they ultimately are, often leaving one alone with their own thoughts and a painfully sleep-deprived stamina. Which is perhaps why that the undercurrent of loneliness in the melancholic and dialogue-free “Robot Dreams,” a wonderful 2D animation by Spanish director Pablo Berger, felt so real and disarming straightaway to this critic on a lonesome, rainy morning in Cannes.
But make no mistake; even outside of the festival circuits, this sweet film on love, friendship and life in New York City is bound to strike a chord with general audiences willing to be coddled with something both innocent and grown-up, that defies the bloat of present-day Disney in its warmth and complexities. After all, the need to have that one special companion...

The miracle of friendship rather than the image of electric sheep is what occupies the subconscious of the charming android gleefully strolling through “Robot Dreams,” Spanish director Pablo Berger’s first animated venture. Fashioned into moving form from the graphic novel by Sara Varon, this hand-drawn buddy dramedy preserves both the cartoon strip aesthetic and lack of dialogue of the source material for a delightfully bittersweet animated wonder that embodies the medium’s most purely cinematic qualities. Now the fierce battle for the title of the best animated film of the year has a new strong contender.
More akin to the sophisticated world of “BoJack Horseman” than that of Disney’s “Zootopia,” the setting is 1980s New York City — the twin towers of the World Trade Center still frame the skyline — but densely populated with an array of anthropomorphic animals. The UK’s Film & TV Production Restart Scheme (Prs) will end up costing the government just £20M ($25M) while generating more than £2.25B ($2.8B) for the nation’s economy, according to an independent report analyzing its success.
The final figures published in the report said the £500M Prs will end up paying out less than £50M to producers – under one-tenth of its initial value – who required insurance cover for Covid-19-related losses. The scheme, which was administered by the BFI and private insurers, collected £35.6M via premiums. This means a government deficit of £19.6M when administration costs are taken into account, the report said.
At time of publication, the UK’s Department for Culture, Media and Sport hadn’t responded to our request for comment over how much of the £50M has been paid to producers. In February, a Deadline investigation revealed the Prs had paid out just over half...

As the BAFTA Film Awards got rolling on Sunday, all eyes were on “All Quiet on the Western Front” and “The Banshees of Inisherin” Martin McDonagh’s pitch black Irish comedy won several of the biggest acting awards to start the day, including Supporting Actress for Kerry Condon and Supporting Actor for Barry Keoghan. McDonagh also took home the award for Original Screenplay, solidifying his frontrunner status in that category at the Oscars.
“All Quiet on the Western Front” set a BAFTA record by picking up 14 nominations, and the ceremony was a reminder of how much BAFTA voters loved the film. Edward Berger’s war movie ultimately won seven awards including Best Film and Best Director.

All Quiet on the Western Front made good on its record number of BAFTA nominations with a major haul of wins at the film awards ceremony on Sunday night.
At London’s Royal Festival Hall, Netflix’s German anti-war epic took the BAFTAs for best film, alongside best adapted screenplay and best director, and hoovered up most of the craft honors for a total of seven gongs (a BAFTA record for a film not in the English language).
Away from the Western Front, Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin won four awards, including half the performance honors, with Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan landing supporting wins. Elsewhere, Austin Butler won leading actor for Elvis, and Cate Blanchett leading actress for Tar.

February is the shortest month of the year but Prime Video is paying that no mind with its jam-packed list of new releases for February 2023.
This really is an uncommonly stuffed month on the Amazon streamer and it all starts with a handful of Amazon Originals. Amazon’s original offerings kick off with the release of Dave Franco-directed romcom Somebody I Used to Know on Feb. 10. That is followed by Carnival Row season 2 – a gritty fantasy crime drama is set in a world of steampunky fairies. The show stars Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevigne and this batch of episodes will be its swan song. Meanwhile The Consultant on Feb. 24 is a dark comedy workplace thriller starring Christoph Waltz.
The biggest hits this month, however, might just be some recent cinema faves. If February is for lovers, Amazon didn’t get the memo as there are quite a few horror movies of note here.

“Gandhi” is the most nominated film at the BAFTAs with 16 nods and “All Quiet” ties with “Atonement,” which also had 14.
Close behind “All Quiet” with 10 nominations apiece are Searchlight’s “The Banshees of Inisherin” and A24’s “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” Warner Bros.’ “Elvis” follows with nine nominations, while Focus Features’ “Tár” received five nods.

BAFTA has unveiled the longlists across all categories for its 2023 Film Awards, and Martin McDonagh’s tragicomedy The Banshees Of Inisherin and Netflix’s All Quiet on the Western Front lead.
Martin McDonagh’s impressive Banshees haul includes Best Director, Film, and Screenplay nods while Colin Farrell is up for Leading Actor and Brendan Gleeson, Barry Keoghan, and Kerry Condon were handed Best Support Actor and Actress nods.
Charlotte Well’s festival favorite Aftersun appears on eight lists, including Best Film, Director, and Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer. Other titles that are well represented today include Oliver Hermanus’s Living and Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis.
In notable snubs, James Cameron’s Avatar sequel The Way of Water did not make either the Best Film or Director longlists. The box office hit is absent from all major categories but shows strongly in craft categories, including Sound and Special Visual Effects.

In recent years, the major Hollywood studios have been taking fewer chances on straight-up comedies, which is a bit of a bummer. The days of movies like "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy," "Superbad," "Bridesmaids," and "The Hangover" making bank at the box office are behind us, and many comedies have been relegated to streaming services unless they happen to offer cross-genre laughs mixed with sci-fi, action, or horror. In fact, most of the highest-grossing comedies overall are animated movies geared toward the whole family. But many of the best comedies dabble in the naughtier side of humor and skew away from pleasing parents and their kids.
When it comes to 2022, many of the best comedies leaned toward adult laughs, but there are a few titles that managed to be quite clever without venturing into the realm of raunchier fare. Whether it's a boxy makeshift robot rebelling against his reclusive creator,...

The holidays are here, Oscar voters. What are you going to watch?
At this point in the calendar, the answer could almost be “everything” – but maybe not everywhere, and definitely not all at once. The Academy Screening Room, the members-only portal where studios can place their films to be viewed by voters, has 178 films as of the beginning of Christmas week, including every major Best Picture contender except for a pair of three-hour epics only recently unveiled, Damien Chazelle’s “Babylon” and James Cameron’s “Avatar: The Way of Water.”
Those films, which beg to be seen on the largest and loudest screen possible, have yet to be added to the Academy Screening Room, a placement that costs 20,000 (albeit with a discount available to lower-budget productions). But while the Asr got off to a slow start this year, the other contenders are all now available for members to view, even...

Peacock has announced that the groundbreaking romantic comedy Bros — the first from a major studio to center on two gay men — will begin streaming exclusively on the platform on December 2nd.
The film directed by Nicholas Stoller is a smart, swoony and heartfelt story about gay men — played by Billy Eichner and Luke Macfarlane—maybe, possibly, probably, stumbling towards love. Maybe. They’re both very busy. Its cast also includes Ts Madison, Miss Lawrence, Symone, Guillermo Diaz, Guy Branum, Monica Raymund, Jim Rash, Harvey Fierstein, Bowen Yang, Amanda Bearse, Dot-Marie Jones, and many more.
Eichner and Stoller penned the script. Stoller also produced alongside Judd Apatow and Josh Church, with Eichner exec producing.
While Bros world premiered to critical acclaim at the 2022 Toronto Film Festival, it had a disappointing showing upon its September theatrical release via Universal Pictures, grossing just over 14.6M worldwide. Its co-writer and star Eichner made history with Bros,...

For Academy voters, it’s time to get serious about watching movies.
But do they have access to all of the films they should be seeing before voting begins on Dec. 12 (for the 10 categories that have a shortlist) or Jan. 12 (for the rest of the categories)? Not exactly – at least not in the Academy Screening Room, the members-only online platform that has become the main way for studios to put their films in front of Oscar voters.
Those voters currently can watch “The Banshees of Inisherin” in the screening room, but not “The Fabelmans.” “Tár” is available to them, but “Women Talking” is not. Yes to “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “Top Gun: Maverick,” but no to “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” or “The Whale.”

To mark the release of Brian and Charles, out now, we’ve been given 3 copies to give away on Blu-ray.
Directed by Jim Archer, Brian is a lonely inventor who lives in a remote valley in North Wales, spending his days in his dilapidated workshop constructing bizarre objects nobody wants. Then one day, Brian builds a robot. Made out of an old washing machine and a battered mannequin head, the 7ft tall machine is a walking, talking lifeform with the mannerisms of an inquisitive child, keen to know about its surroundings and how everything works. Initially, Brian and Charles have a great time together, the robot being the perfect antidote to Brian’s loneliness. However, as their relationship develops, things become strained.
Charles, desiring independence, becomes obsessed with seeing the world. But Brian is reluctant to even let Charles outside, and makes it clear from the offset that it’s a dangerous world out there.

A steady flow of specialty films starts this weekend with the return of a key player to cinemas and a broader arthouse slate that will expand steadily into awards season. This is still a weird theatrical landscape but independent distributors and theater owners have agreed for months that there’s no recovery without a brisker pace of new releases
Indie distributors also appreciate that the weekend’s big studio release, The Woman King with Viola Davis, is a classic battle epic, yes, but also a story for adults, and for women. Another wide release, A24’s XXX prequel Pearl, skews young but — it’s still indie.
“I think we are starting to get a full complement of movies to see. Adult movies that are smart and funny,” says one specialty distribution executive. It’s been a long wait. “Patience is a virtue we need to have a lot of. These may not [all] be huge movies,...

Neon, Double Agent and Film4 are partnering to co-finance and exec produce 2073, a new documentary from Academy Award and BAFTA-winning director Asif Kapadia (Amy).
2073 is billed as a genre-bending thriller set in a dystopian future, which will tackle some of the biggest challenges imperiling our future. The project is inspired by Chris Marker’s iconic 1962 featurette La Jetée — about a time traveler who risks his life to change the course of history and save the future of humanity — which previously served as the basis for Terry Gilliam’s sci-fi pic 12 Monkeys, with Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt.
Kapadia and George Chignell are producing. Davis Guggenheim, Nicole Stott and Jonathan Silberberg will exec produce on behalf of Concordia Studio, alongside Riz Ahmed’s Left Handed Films.

After a typically eclectic year for the speciality banner that has seen hits, including Kenneth Branagh’s black-and-white semi-autobiographical Oscar winner Belfast, misses such as Robert Eggers’ rampaging 70 million-plus viking revenge thriller The Northman, and releases like the Downton Abbey sequel, Edgar Wright’s creepy 60s time-traveler Last Night in Soho and lo-fi Brit comedy Brian and Charles (featuring perhaps the most ridiculous robot ever seen on screen), Focus Features kicks off its fall festival season with a more classical number.
Or is it? Not a huge deal is known about TÁR, Todd Field’s much-hyped return to the director’s chair 15 years after his last feature Little Children, aside from the fact that it stars Cate Blanchett as a celebrated fictional composer and conductor.

With seven nominations to his name, perennial Oscar contender Wes Anderson can call his own shots. It helps that he’s one of Hollywood’s most visually creative auteurs. Since 2012’s “Moonrise Kingdom,” which Focus Features released, Searchlight has distributed all of Anderson’s features, from his biggest global hit in 2014, “The Grand Budapest Hotel” and 2018’s stop-motion “Isle of Dogs” (59 million in 2018) to 2021’s “The French Dispatch” (45.6 million worldwide) which delayed its Cannes world premiere by a year due to the pandemic and also relied, like everyone else, on online revenues.
So why did Anderson return to Focus for his latest star-crammed comedy ensemble, “Asteroid City” (2023), an original “poetic meditation on the meaning of life” co-written with his usual collaborator Roman Coppola? This time Anderson returns to a fictional American locale, setting the 1955 story at a desert town’s Junior Stargazer convention, which pulls in student competitors and their parents from across the country.
