How can this retelling improve upon Melville's classic novel Moby-Dick? For those who've not yet caught it in cinemas, let us count the ways from the trailer
Herman Melville's Moby-Dick is considered a landmark of western literature. It's an inventive, allegorical meditation on obsession, revenge, religion and the limits of human control. But is it perfect? No, it is not. Nor is John Huston's 1956 cinematic take on the story; while it may be a beautifully shot and remarkably faithful adaptation of Melville's work, it leaves plenty of room for improvement.
So thank heavens for Age of the Dragons. It's a fresh retelling of Moby-Dick that, if the trailer is any indication, vastly improves on both Huston's adaptation and the original source novel itself. How does Age of the Dragons manage this impressive feat? Glad you asked. Here are 10 unequivocal reasons ...
1 – It's set on land.

World AIDS Day didn't escape Russell Brand's attention today, and although he didn't sign off of Twitter to show his support, he did offer some advice to his followers.
In other tweets, David Slade dismayed over the technical problems that plagued the Spider-Man musical in New York, though he didn't sound all that broken up over what the show's fate might mean for a Hulk musical down the road. Wyclef Jean already has at least one vocal backer for his run for President in Haiti, thanks to Ice-t. Conan O'Brien may be on board, too, but he's got some high standards. In the world of direct-to-dvd sequels that's shortly to bring us Lost Boys 3, all an enterprising studio needs is the rights to a good title and a director who's willing to work fast
Lost Boys 3, the second sequel to Kiefer Sutherland's 80s vampire hit, is coming out later this year. What? You missed Lost Boys 2? Don't worry, so did Kiefer (although it does feature his half-brother Angus). Lost Boys 2, which went straight to DVD in 2008, is a poor retread of the original, but recouped its $5m budget in less than a month, paving the way for a third film. Welcome to the world of DVD sequels, where profits are high, stakes are low, and quality lower.
Back in the 90s, the direct-to-video sequel industry mainly produced animated or family films, with Disney in particular happy to churn out weak sequels for everything from Bambi to Pocahontas. However, the decreasing...

The latest trailers for "Eclipse" and "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" have given several faces in Twitter-Wood something to post about this week. Apparently even those who were on set for the newest "Twilight" film can still be made to scream when they see their work in motion.

Vuvuzelas and Nintendo's 3Ds are raking in the comments on Twitter right now, and as with most things, some people are fans and some are not. Stephen Colbert chose an anti-3Ds stance last night in one of his posts, whereas Russell Brand happens to be a fan of those horn noises at the World Cup.
I think it's safe to say that most of Twitter-Wood's citizens are fans of "Entourage." I'm personally a fan of the great photography the show has been able to generate for the column here. Jones Angry Over Smokin' Aces Sequel Treatment
Vinnie Jones has hit out at film bosses for releasing Smokin' Aces 2: Assassins' Ball straight to DVD rather than showing it in movie theatres.
The hardman played hitman Finbar McTeague opposite Tom Berenger and Sofia Vergara in the sequel to director Joe Carnahan's 2006 film.
The movie went straight to DVD in January, and Jones is annoyed after executives at Universal Studios skipped a big-screen release.
He says, "I'm really proud of it because it's a brilliant movie, but from day one it was straight to DVD.
"I asked the bigwigs at the film company why, and they just said, 'That's business.' It's a bit of a b**lock-ache."...

Shift into high gear, things seem to be moving along for Universal's Death Race 2. It was recently announced that Sean Bean is now set to star opposite Luke Goss in Death Race 2, a prequel to Universal's 2008 flick Death Race starring Jason Statham, itself a remake of the 1975 flick Death Race 2000. By now we all know that poor reviews and even mediocre box office results won't necessarily stop a sequel from getting greenlit, particularly if said sequel can be produced on the cheap. Last year it was announced [1] that a prequel to Paul W.S. Anderson's Death Race remake was in the works, and at the time I wondered how it could be anything but a Dtv release. This week we have confirmation that Death Race 2 is indeed going direct-to-dvd, although that hasn't prevented Universal from recruiting some recognizable names to star in it. According to Heat Vision [2], Sean Bean and Luke Goss have signed on to headline the film, with Goss playing the original Frankenstein, a convicted cop killer who becomes a reality TV hero. Lauren Cohan, Ving Rhames, Danny Trejo, and Frederick Koehler will also star, with Koehler apparently being the only returning cast member from Anderson's previous film.

The Hitcher is back! Or at least in spirit. Heat Vision confirms that Sean Bean and Luke Goss have both been cast in Death Race: Frankenstein Lives, the sequel/prequel to Paul W.S. Anderson's Death Race remake from 2008. Since Anderson is preparing to shoot The Three Musketeers (in 3D), Dutch filmmaker Roel Reiné is taking over directing duties on this prequel. The only bad thing is that it looks like this is going straight-to-dvd as part of Universal's new DVD Originals banner, which recently put out Smokin' Aces 2: Assassins' Ball on DVD as well. I don't have high hopes for this, but it could potentially turn out pretty cool. Death Race: Frankenstein Lives (the full title) is actually a prequel, not a sequel, that tells the origin story of the legendary driver known as Frankenstein. Goss will play a convicted cop killer in a declining "American Empire," where...

CAA-repped Bean, seen on screens as Zeus in "Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief," is starring in the pilot "A Game of Thrones," which is awaiting a series pick-up order from HBO.

The film follows FBI Agent Walter Weed (Tom Berenger), whose unimportant, boring position with the Bureau becomes a whole lot more engaging when he finds out that a cadre of assassins are looking to take him out. Evading the hit men and women puts Weed in for the ride of his life as he learns more about the mysterious figure who has dispatched them.

Smokin Aces 2 is a bad movie, folks. I don't know what else to say about it. It's a shitty, shitty film. It's irredeemably bad. It's boring. It's aimless. It's pointless. It's ineptly directed, barely written, and terribly acted. The effects are laughable, the pacing is irregular, and the plot is nonexistent. It shouldn't be watched. It doesn't deserve its title, it doesn't deserve Vinnie Jones, and it doesn't deserve your time.
Lookit: I dug the original Smokin' Aces. It was solid, tightly-paced, well-constructed escapist fare that breezed toward a killer Mexican stand-off. Granted, it was little more than a long, elaborate setup for a 20-minute shoot-out, but the setup was painless and the shoot-out was glorious. Also, the capping of Ben Affleck nearly atoned for a decade's worth of cinematic sins.

In the twelve years since he premiered his first feature, Blood, Guts, Bullets, and Octane, at Sundance, Joe Carnahan has been through his fair share of ups and downs. Sure, he earned critical acclaim with Narc, a cult following with the critically maligned actioner Smokin' Aces in 2007, and notched a writing credit on Pride and Glory in 2008, but he also had no less than four major directing projects stall or fizzle out, including Mission Impossible III, Bunny Lake is Missing, White Jazz, and Killing Pablo. And when your luck is so bad that Entourage makes a bizarro version of your film before you do -- as it did with the faux film Medellin -- well, you can use a karmic turn of events.
So it's with great anticipation that his supporters look toward 2010, when Carnahan directs again for the first time in four years. His summer studio flick, an update...

Given the amount of plugs, if you found yourself watching the Golden Globes on Sunday then you'd know that host Ricky Gervais' comedy "The Invention of Lying" was coming to home video today. The film places Gervais in an alternate reality where everyone always tells the truth, giving him a considerable edge when he becomes the first person in the world "invent" the concept of fibbing. The rom-com comes to DVD and Blu-ray with a few extras including a making-of featurette, deleted scenes, and a mini-doc following Karl Pilkington from Gervais' wildly popular podcast series. It's rather odd that a commentary track isn't one of the extras; you'd think it'd be a natural addition given Gervais also co-wrote the pic. But alas...

For the most part, it's a week where mediocre to terrible theatrical releases are getting dumped to DVD, but you may still find a few things of interest on store shelves today. In addition to poorly-reviewed crap like Gamer, Pandorum and Whiteout, there is also the Ricky Gervais comedy The Invention of Lying, and a pair of decent documentaries in Outrage and No Impact Man. Also out this week is the Criterion release of Steven Soderbergh's 4-hour epic Che, plus Season 5 of Weeds and Magnolia on Blu-ray. Will you be picking up anything on DVD or Blu-ray this week? Out doing promotion for the direct-to-dvd sequel "Smokin' Aces 2", director Joe Carnahan tells Cinematical that he hasn't finalised his next project yet but has one in mind.
"There's a film that I wrote that I want to do called The Grey which is about a group of pipeline workers in Alaska flying back into civilization after being remote for a number of months. The 737 they're on goes down, and they begin to be hunted by a pack of rogue wolves. It's very much a man vs. nature adventure, existentialist kind of drama that I want to do. We're very, very close to it now" says Carnahan.
Two other projects he's been attached to, the Pablo Escobar biopic "Killing Pablo" and the James Ellroy adaptation "White Jazz", are still very much on the cards for him. Ellroy himself has said the 'Jazz' film was pretty much dead, but Carnahan is...

Boogie Nights and Magnolia (Blu-ray) I love both of these films and will be reviewing both of these Blu-rays together very shortly, I have simply been pressed for time lately and have not had a chance to watch either of them as of yet primarily because simply watching both of these films before even delving into the features is almost six hours of movie watching. That said, neither disc offers any new supplements with all of the previous features from earlier DVD releases carried over to these new releases. I have also read the picture quality on each are excellent so should you be interested in upgrading your current editions these sound like safe bets. Che (Criterion Collection) My extremely long review is online for you to read and I also brought this title up in an editorial last week.

Smokin' Aces 2: Assassin's Ball Quick Thoughts: I'm a fan of the original Smokin' Aces as a piece of escapist fun. It's also a film I would recommend fans of absurd black-comedy action features pick up and add to their collection. However, Smokin' Aces 2: Assassin's Ball (referred to as Smokin' Aces: Blowback in all of the special features) just isn't up to par, and for the most part it can't really help but look like the direct-to-dvd/Blu-ray film it is. Tons of obvious green screen work, second rate effects and an aging Tom Berenger as your biggest star doesn't exactly spell out top quality. Director P.J. Pesce was obviously working with a minimal budget and he did what he could with what he had, but a stand-out film experience this is not.

Not long after the certifiably insane Smokin' Aces came and went and then sold a Lot of dvds, we started hearing all sorts of little stories about sequels, prequels, or any sort of follow-up. Clearly someone at Universal (besides Aces director/co-writer Joe Carnahan, I mean) saw the potential in keeping this franchise afloat, even if that meant remanding the subsequent sequels to the "lesser" direct-to-video market. And even those who adored Smokin' Aces would have to see the logic there: Pretty much all the characters from the first flick were dead, and even those who survived ... aren't exactly huge stars.
So off to the video shelves we go with Smokin' Aces 2: Assassin's Ball, and this time the directorial reins are in the hands of P.J. Pesce -- and if you're looking for a guy to bang out a direct-to-video sequel, Mr. Pesce is your man. His previous...

Cinematical spoke with "Smokin'" Joe Carnahan today as he hit the press for next week's Smokin' Aces 2, a prequel to his 2006 shoot 'em up bonanza that he lovingly executive produced. (Check back for our full interview next week.) His next film, this summer's adaptation of the gloriously cheesy '80s series The A-Team, will be his biggest film to date - but after having a number of projects start and stop over the past few years (including a remake of Otto Preminger's Bunny Lake is Missing, an adaptation of James Ellroy's White Jazz, and Killing Pablo, the development of which was infamously parodied on HBO's Entourage), what will Carnahan tackle next?
Keeping mum on whether or not The A-Team could yield sequels if it opens big this June, Carnahan clarified what he'd like to put on his upcoming slate. "There's a film that I wrote that I...

Earlier today Ugo's Jordan Hoffman got on the phone with Joe Carnahan to talk about the Smokin' Aces 2 DVD, and since the two have known each other a while, apparently, Jordan got Carnahan to spill some of the goods on The A-Team as well. You've all seen the trailer, but you might have even more reason to look forward to it-- because Mr. T might be in the movie. Now, it's not really clear how he'd be in the movie exactly-- Carnahan reaffirmed that Mr. T wouldn't show up in the movie as anyone but B.A. Baracus, but also said cryptically when Jordan asked why Mr. T wasn't in the movie, "I don.t know that he.s not, brutha, I don.t know that he.s not! That book is not yet closed." So.... is someone going to step through a magic mirror and show us B.

Federal agents once again match wits with a cadre of creative killers in the high-octane feature-length film Smokin’ Aces 2: Assassins’ Ball. I still haven't seen Joe Carnahan's Smokin' Aces, but the high energy hitman flick it seems to have a fair amount of fans out there. (Personally I always thought it looked like a Guy Ritchie knockoff, but maybe I'm wrong on that.) At any rate, the film was apparently popular enough to warrant a direct-to-dvd sequel... er, I mean, prequel. Joe Carnahan obviously has better things to do with his time (like directing The A-Team, for example), but he is still credited as executive producer on Smokin' Aces 2: Assassin's Ball. The actual director of this flick, unfortunately, is P.J. Pesce -- the same man behind such memorable Dtv flicks as Lost Boys: The Tribe and From Dusk Till Dawn 3: The Hangman's Daughter. None of the big name original cast members are returning for this film, but Tommy Flanagan will reprise his role as Lazlo Soot, and...

Sure, the title of the direct-to-dvd follow-up to Joe Carnahan's wicked violent Smokin' Aces isn't Electric Bugaloo, but I happen to like it better than Smokin' Aces 2: Assassin's Ball. So sue me. This prequel, from director P.J. Pesce (Lost Boys: The Tribe), follows the story of several of the world's greatest, sexiest and most obnoxiously insane assassins -- all looking to kill one man, the criminally pedestrian Tom Berenger. More specifically, the plot goes something like this: Walter Weed (Tom Berenger) is an unassuming desk jockey at the FBI when the Bureau uncovers a plot to assassinate him. A team of degenerate, psychotic assassins dispatched by mystery man Hal Leuco to win a huge bounty includes a resourceful beauty who has a unique method of killing her prey (Martha Higareda), a power-tool wielding psychopath (Vinnie Jones) and a deadly master of disguise (Tommy Flanagan). Casting for Fox's 24 has definitely reached a fever pitch over the last month or so. According to The Hollywood Reporter, actor Clayne Crawford is set to join the show in its eighth season as a recurring character. The actor will reportedly be playing a bad boy character, one that is used to be involved with Dana Walsh, another new character who is an experience CTU analyst. As we previously reported, Katee Sackoff of Battlestar Galactica fame will play Walsh. My prediction is that Dana will be integral to helping ward off a terrorist threat and Crawford's character will re-insert himself into her life, at the worst possible time. Crawford has a pretty long resume of minor roles. He was most recently in Smokin' Aces: Blowback and also had an arch on the short-lived Jericho on CBS.
