[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from the entirety of Netflix’s series “Dark.”]
Netflix’s German supernatural mystery thriller doesn’t fit neatly into any puzzle box, but it sure is addictive and intriguing. Initially built around the case of a missing boy in Winden, “Dark” quickly bursts through the confines of the small town — not by reaching beyond its borders, but beyond its time. The curious time travel element, however, is a tricky one, and two warring forces are trying to control it. Unfortunately, it seems that many young boys have been caught in the middle.
The time travel occurs in 33-year increments, which creates a curious connection with Winden’s past, present, and future. In particular, viewers have gotten to know the young, middle-aged, and older versions of the same characters that hail from a few major families. Trying to keep the various surnames, generations, and each person’s secrets straight is difficult enough, but throw in a kidnapping priest, arcane references,...

Chicago – The combination of two different souls with two different problems – isolated in rural Illinois – was the story that director James Choi knew he wanted to produce as his next film project. So armed with a micro budget, a four man production crew and a cast of passionate actors, Choi created “Empty Space.” The film is making its Chicago premiere at the Windy City Film Festival on Saturday, July 1st, 2017.

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
Even Emma Watson and Tom Hanks May Not Be Enough to Make a Mark As April Ends
The last weekend of April, and the “slower” spring movie season is ending this weekend, leading directly into the start of the lucrative summer box office next week. As has been the case in past years, the last couple weekends in April see a couple movies hoping to bring in any amount of money before the first big summer blockbuster, and other movies that will steal away their theaters. Last weekend was pretty sad, but hopefully a few of this weekend’s movies will fare better.

The work of David Redmon and Ashley Sabin first came on my radar when they arrived in Hartford, Ct to promote their eye-opening documentary, Mardi Gras: Made in China, tracing both the production and disposal of Mardi Gras beads. With the doors of the Tribeca Film Festival already closed, what are New York cinephiles to do in the long stretch of time between the next iteration of the Brooklyn or New York Film Festival? Well, they can certainly wet their whistle at Scene:Brooklyn, an independent film and media arts series put on by the Brooklyn Arts Council. Containing dozens of shorts, features (including "The Iran Job" by Till Schauder and Sara Nodjoumi and "Redlegs" by Brandon Harris), and other presentations/masterclasses, there's plenty to chew on to keep the festival spirit going. Running from May 2-6 (check out the events here), the series kicked off with "Brooklyn In Brief," a collection of over fifteen shorts broken up into two sets: 8 narrative and 7 documentaries.

Most of the fun of 'Storage Wars' (Wednesdays, 10Pm on A&E) is the detective work pf figuring out what a storage unit might be worth without being able to dig in and look around. Dave Hester is one of the best at that, and on Wednesday's episode, he saw something about a particular unit at Mission Hill Self Storage that he couldn't resist.
Hester saw a locker full of what looked like unopened boxes marked "Made In China," all with one company's imprint on them. "I know what it costs to ship merchandise from overseas," said Hester. "This would be four to five thousand bucks. So whatever is in here has to have value." Hester had to fight off Mark Balelo, a bidder who had been running up prices all day, to win the locker for $9,000.

Photo via MICGadget.com.Sorry, male-doll enthusiasts, but Facebook’s lawyers are not sharing (which, Qed, is caring) the Mark Zuckerberg action figure, a lifelike, seven-inch future Winklevi voodoo instrument. Yesterday producers of the short-lived doll, Made in China Gadgets, posted an email they claim was “from a Beijing law firm representing Facebook.Inc.” According to the toy makers, “[t]he law firm has informed us that the Poking Inventor action figure has not consented to the use of Facebook’s copyrights and trademarks, and at the same time, using Mr. Mark Zuckerberg’s portraiture for commercial purpose.” (More specific legalese is available here.) Many people have likely already set playdates that necessitate the involvement of a Mark Zuckerberg doll (“come over with your Lesley Stahl doll and let’s reenact the 60 Minutes interview!”) but do not worry: we made such a doll for you. For years, the tag on the inside of various garments has read “Made in China,” but this season at Fashion Week many designers, and even a smattering of socialites, have been looking to Asia for inspiration.

Jia Zhangke has touches of Kiarostami, Ozu and Antonioni in him, yet he’s ultimately as singular as any of the three. The World, his fourth feature and first to be officially approved by government censors, is no less sincere, indeed scathing, a critique of China’s cultural displacement, caused by the advent of a highly capitalist economic system paired with a lingering dictatorial grip on the social liberties of the people.
Set in an Epcot-like theme park that included miniature copies of the world’s most famous landmarks, Jia’s film juxtaposes the run-down, Communist housing with the influx of free enterprise capitalism of the amusement park, illustrating how the country is trapped between a system that failed the people terribly and one that does not offer much hope to the majority of China’s 1.3 billion people. Most of the film’s characters work in the park,...

Last Train Home, the directorial debut of documentary filmmaker Lixin Fan, has had an impressive streak at the past year's major film festivals. An official selection of Sundance Film Festival, and winner at several festivals including the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival, San Francisco International Film Festival, and top tier docu festival Idfa (International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam), this chronicles two years in the lives of the Zhengs, a working-class Chinese family who are separated for economic reasons. The parents are two of the 130 million Chinese migrant workers who currently work in the factories of China's major cities, leaving the countryside for opportunity and economic growth. They are only allowed to go home once a year, and that is for Chinese New Year in February. But with that many workers, it is practically impossible that all will be guaranteed a train ticket home to see their families. Fan uses...

The media fuss about recent suicides at China's Foxconn company, an electronics manufacturer that supports, among others, Apple, has prompted a debate about the future. In particular, will rising wages drive tech firms elsewhere for cheap labor?
The Wall Street Journal has a contemplative piece on this matter today. The article starts by mentioning the suicides at Foxconn's factories and notes that there have now been several moves to elevate the wages of the workers there in order to try to relieve some of their stresses. These payments are going to be welcome, even if they're borne of two slightly misplaced pieces of thinking--that the working conditions in another country must comply with the ethics and norms of your country, and that the suicides definitely represent a significant cluster. The latter of these two is disproved by some simple statistics, and even Steve Jobs himself has pointed this out, but...

Sylvester Stallone has been nominated for 29 Razzie awards, dishonoring his career as an actor, director and screenwriter. Of those, he's "won" ten, including Worst Actor of the Decade (1980s) and Worst Actor of the Century (20th). Now he's expanding his reach to Indian cinema, having appeared as himself in a recent Bollywood production titled "Kambakkht Ishq" (aka "Incredible Love" or "Damn Love"), which has earned eight nominations, including one for Worst Film, for that film industry's equivalent of the Razzies, the Golden Kela Awards.
Also appearing in the same film, about an Indian stuntman in Hollywood, is Denise Richards, who received a Worst Supporting Actress Razzie for "The World is Not Enough" (she was also nominated with Pierce Brosnan for Worst Screen Couple after that James Bond installment). It would seem the two Razzie vets are mucking things up in Bollywood now. Together, they are nominated for something called the...

Jacoby was about to become the most recent in a long line of Germans bearing promises. " 'I don't want to come to Orlando and hear all these lies,' " he recalls, quoting the note. Judith Krant makes her directorial debut with Made In China, a satirical mockumentary mumblecore mutt of a movie that is as original and creatively risque as it is funny and intelligent. Jackson Kuehn (Singularity) stars as Johnson, an eager and ambitious young entrepreneur who has decided to go all out and focus on making his novelty invention a reality. He sets off for Shanghai, China at his mother’s behest and begins his journey to find the elusive James Choi, the man who Johnson believes will manufacture anything.
Made In China is a wacky criticism of contemporary trends. Part mockumentary, part Michael Moore and Morgan Spurlock documentary, with all the appeal of The Office. Johnson is confident and sure that his product will be a huge hit. His scenes, often aggressive and awkward, hint at an influence from Sasha Baron Cohen without the controversial crudeness. The film switches from segments...

The film's trailer and an interview with Mabry are linked at the bottom.

Cologne, Germany -- Thomas Sieben's dark drama "Distance" took the top prize for best German Film at 2009 Oldenburg Film Festival, which wrapped up Sunday.
An unusual love story focusing on reclusive gardener (Ken Duken) who engages in indiscriminate acts of violence, "Distance" was the local stand out.
But the audience award went to an American film -- Judith Krant's globalization comedy "Made in China." The crowd-pleaser tells the story of an inventor of gag novelties who follows his American dream all the way to Shanghai.
"Made in China" swept the South-by-South-West Film Festival earlier this year, where it picked up the best film and special jury awards as well as the emerging woman award for director Krant.

A naïve lad from small town East Texas travels to Shanghai, China to get his sure-fire novelty “Humorous Domestic Hygiene Product” made. His only weapons are sneezing powder and a winning smile. Judith Krant’s debut movie is an indie gem and I loved it. Skillfully shot in guerilla style, Made In China took the Grand Jury Prize for feature at SXSW, and the crowd around me at the Newport Beach festival loved it too. Now, I hear you say, where is the Quiet Earth post-apocalyptic/horror element in all this? Is there a subtle and clever relation to the decimation of American manufacturing industry and a brave new world of global realignment? No, is there bollocks. But it is well-funny and you will catch glimpses of a rubber chicken and joke dog plop.

Judi Krant's Made in China, premiering in Narrative Competition at SXSW, follows "a self-styled novelty inventor from a small town in East Texas" (Jackson Kuehn) who travels to Shanghai to make it big with his latest bright idea. In her answers to The 5 Questions We Ask Everyone, below the jump, Krant talks about paying the bills with vegetable oil, breaking out of jail with art cinema, and counteracting the SXSW conspiracy theory. Tell us about your movie. Who did you work with, why did you make it?
